First determine if you want to heat the pool or the spa. Then move the pool systems 3-way valves accordingly. This part you must know how to do. If you do not, call your pool contractor to learn. Set the 3-way valve to either the pool suction/pool return or spa suction/spa return. NOTE: Only use pool skimmer not main drain when you are heating your pool! If you have a pool only, a 3-way valve adjustment is NOT required. After the pool or spa is filled with water, in most cases 2” of water above the skimmer inlet and above the spa therapy jets. TURN ON POWER TO THE PUMP by turning on the pool or spa electric time clock (read time clock instructions on how to operate). Place time clock on continuous operation until the next day 24 hours. Wait for the pump to prime itself completely with water, void of all air, and has run and purged all air into the pool or spa. The pumps clear plastic view cover must be void of all air bubbles…If air bubbles continue contact your pool contractor to resolve the problem before going on to the next step. Open the TANKLES$ HEATER VALVE B by first moving the valve handle down or up, parallel with piping (see diagram A for Valve B instructions). Open the TANKLES$ HEATER VALVE A by first removing the valve handle down or up, parallel with piping (see diagram A for Valve A instructions). Turn on the main power circuit breakers or disconnects to the pool/spa heater. These are normally in your main house circuit panel in the garage or just next to the pool heater…marked pool heater. The pump must be running and primed, then turn on the toggle switch to the heater, located on the right hand side of the digital control box that is mounted on the front of the heater. UP is ON. Look at the digital control window, if a temperature does not appear there is no power to the unit, or the pool pump is not operating. Look for power circuit breakers or disconnects and turn them on. If the numbers then appear go to next step. REMEMBER THE POOL/SPA PUMP MUST BE RUNNING FOR THIS STEP. SETTING THE POOL OR SPA TEMPERATURE: i. First make sure the digital window shows a temperature read out, it should be your pool temperature…[example: 80°F] 5

PUSH THE SET BUTTON TO LOCK IN, you will see the letter F=Fahrenheit or C=Centigrade. Push the up or down arrow to C or F in the window. PUSH THE SET BUTTON TO LOCK IN C OR F. You will see a temperature set point read out, push arrow up or down to raise or lower your temperature setting. PUSH SET TO LOCK IN YOUR TEMPERATURE SETTING. You will see a flashing letter and a number, push arrow up or down until you reach 1°F=differential. This means if your pool temperature is 84°F the heater will go off at 84°F, and on again when the temperature is 82°F to maintain the 1° differential. You will see in the window H1 or C1 push the arrow up or down to H1 ONLY for heat. Then PUSH THE SET BUTTON TO LOCK IN H1 FOR HEAT. You will see the pool temperature again in the view window. STOP WAIT FOR THE HEATER TO START 5 TO 7 MINUTES, allowing the heater to compute all systems to go or not. If everything is OK you will see S1 in the upper left hand corner…HEATER WILL CLICK ON. Look at the pilot light on the right hand side of the heater, it should be on, (if it is not you must go through STEP 9 again up to this point). Be sure your set temperature is at least 2° above the pool temperature (EXAMPLE: pool temperature said 85°F but the digital control set point temperature said 86°F you must set it to 87°F or higher if you want the heater to respond and heat the water. If not the pool temperature will stay at 86°F. Your pool/spa heater will raise the temperature of the water approximately 1° -3° per hour. If your pool is 74°F and you want it to reach an 84°F temperature you must run your pump f or at least 10 hours to achieve the 10° rise. After your pool/spa has reached your desired temperature the heater will stop running, but your pump will continue to filter water for approximately 8 hours a day. This is done by reinstalling the gold tab on your pool timer clock. Do the same on all other type timers that control the pump filtering system. Your pool is now set to reheat up the next day and your pool heater will heat up your pool the 2° it may have lost overnight. If the temperature has dropped 2° overnight the pool heater will run approximately 2 hours then shut off, but your pool pump will continue to filter. The same process will continue day after day until you change the digital to a higher or lower temperature. However if it rains and the pool water cools down dramatically you will have to reset the pool pump to run longer to bring the water up to your desired temperature once again.
When your heater piping system is set for spa heating and you follow all temperature settings, your spa temperature will rise approximately 15-20° per hour with a 300 gallon spa. COST OF OPERATION IS BASED ON $.08 PER KWH…For every hour your pool heater is in operation the KWH charges are $1.44 [18KW x $.08 = $1.44]. ATTENTION: POOL SERVICE PERSON…TURN OFF THE POOL HEATER WHEN SERVICING FOR: Pool repair, piping repair, filter cleaning, spa cleaning, adding chemicals or water, pump repair or just moving the valves…FAILURE TO TURN OFF THE HEATER MAY RESULT IN HEATER DAMAGE, AND WILL VOID ALL VERBAL, WRITTEN, AND EXPRESSED WARRANTIES. 1. TURNING THE HEATER OFF: Turn the power switch off (located on the right hand side of the digital control box mounted on the front cover of the heater) OFF/DOWN POSITION. Turn off Valve B only by moving down or up to horizontal with piping (see diagram A for B operating instructions).

2. TURNING THE HEATER ON: When the pool or spa pump is still running and purged of all air bubbles, turn valve B to the heater down or up to parallel with piping (see diagram A for valve B operating instructions). 3. TURN THE HEATER ON WITH THE TOGGLE ON/OFF SWITCH IN THE UP POSITION. Located on the right hand side of the digital temperature control box mounted on the front cover of the heater. 4. THE DIGITAL CONTROL TEMPERATURE CONTROL DOES NOT NEED RECALCULATION, IT REMEMBERS ALL THE LAST SETTINGS AND IS READY TO START AGAIN JUST WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. PROGRAMMING THE DIGITAL TEMPERATURE CONTROL To Select A Water Temperature BUT FIRST A. B.
Pump and System must be purged of air FIRST before turning on heater. Turn on heater switch. (up for ON). After 5-10 minutes of pump run time you will see the LCD display the existing pool or water heater temperature.
PROGRAMMING STEPS AND DISPLAY The ETC can be programmed in four simple steps using the LCD display and the three keys on the face of the control Step 1. To start programming, press the SET key once to access the Fahrenheit/Celsius mode. The display will show the current status, either F for degrees Fahrenheit or C for degrees Celsius. Then press either the up or down arrow key to toggle between F or C designation. Step 2. Press the SET key again to access the setpoint. The LCD will display the current setpoint and the S1 annunciator will be blinking on and off to indicate that the control is in the setpoint mode. Then either press the up key to increase or the down key to decrease the setpoint ot the desired temperature setting. Step 3. Press the SET key again to access the differential. The LCD will display the current differential and the DIF 1 annunciator will be blinking on and off to indicate the control is in the differential mode. Then press either the up key to increase or the down key to decrease the differential to the desired setting. Step 4. Press the SET key again to access the cooling or heating mode. The LCD will display the current mode, either C1 for cooling or H1 for heating. Then press either the up key or the down key to toggle to H1 only designation. Press the SET key once more and programming is complete. NOTE: Use only the H1 designation for heat, never the C1 for cooling.
7
NOTE: Setting Heater temperature higher will NOT make heater work faster.
NOTE: The ETC will automatically end programming if no keys are depressed for a period of 30 seconds. Any settings that have not been input to the control will be accepted at that point.

TANKLES$ INC IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WHEN USING THIS ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, BASIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: 1. READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS 2. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY: a. The water in a pool or tub should never exceed 104 °degrees F (40° degrees C). A water temperature in excess of 104 degrees F is considered unsafe for all persons. Lower water temperatures are recommended for extended use (exceeding 10-15 minutes) and for young children. b. Since excessive water temperatures have a high potential for causing fetal damage during the early months of pregnancy, pregnant or possibly pregnant women should limit poo lor tub water temperatures to 100 °degrees F (38 °degrees C). c. Before entering a pool or tub, the user should measure the water temperature at several occupant locations using an accurate thermometer since the tolerance of water temperatureregulating devices may vary as much as +/- 5° F (+/- 3° C). d. Alcohol, drugs, or medications should not be used before or during pool or tub use since their use may lead to unconsciousness with the possibility of drowning. e. Obese persons and persons with medical history of heart disease, low or high blood pressure, circulatory system problems, or diabetes should consult a physician before using a pool or tub. f. Persons using medication should consult a physician before using a pool or tub since some medications may induce drowsiness while other medications may affect heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation. 3. CAUTION: The prolonged immersion in hot water may induce hypothermia. The causes, symptoms, and effects of hypothermia may be described as: “Hypothermia occurs when the internal temperature of the body reaches a level several degrees above the normal body temperature of 98.6 °degrees F.” The symptoms of hypothermia include dizziness, fainting, drowsiness, lethargy, and an increase in the internal temperature of the body. The effects of hypothermia include: a. Unawareness of impending hazard; b. Failure to perceive heat; c. Failure to recognize the need to exit pool or tub; d. Physical inability to exit pool or tub; e. Fetal damage in pregnant women and; f. Unconsciousness resulting in a danger of drowning. WARNING: The use of alcohol, drugs or medications can greatly increase risk of fatal hypothermia in pools and tubs. 4. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

Troubleshooting and Repairs
POOL SERVICE PERSON CAUTIONS ATTENTION: POOL SERVICE PERSON…TURN OFF THE POOL HEATER WHEN SERVICING FOR: Pool repair, piping repair, filter cleaning, spa cleaning, adding chemicals or water, pump repair or just moving the valves…FAILURE TO TURN OFF THE HEATER MAY RESULT IN HEATER DAMAGE, AND WILL VOID ALL VERBAL, WRITTEN, AND EXPRESSED WARRANTIES. 1. TURNING THE HEATER OFF: Turn the power switch. 4. THE DIGITAL CONTROL TEMPERATURE CONTROL DOES NOT NEED RECALCULATION, IT REMEMBERS ALL THE LAST SETTINGS AND IS READY TO START AGAIN JUST WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. LIMITED WARRANTY
What can go wrong. 1. You can think there is a problem and be incorrect. 2. You can run the unit dry of fluid and burn up elements. 3. Elements can burn out and need to be replaced. 4. You do not have enough pressure coming to the heater to engage the pressure switch. 5. The pressure switch can fail. 6. You can run the unit dry and burn out thermostats. 7. The electronic temperature control can fail. Diagnostic Test for unit as a whole to see if it is operating at full capacity. 1. Measure the AMP draw to the unit when it is operating. You put an AMP clamp over the inbound lines with the meter set to AMPS. Refer to the full load AMP draw for your heater on page 3 of this manual. If the unit is on and pulling less than the full load AMP draw there is probably a bad element or thermostat. Diagnostic tests for elements If your heater does not heat and all the lights are on then the first check should be the elements. If your heater is tripping the breaker your first test should be to test the elements. 1. Turn off the power at the breaker. 2. Measure the ohms across the two posts at the top of the element. The schedule below shows what the ohms reading should be depending on the size of the element. 6000W 240 V Ohms= 9.6 4500 W 240 V Ohms= 12.8 6000 W 208 V Ohms=7.2 If the ohms reading is 0 the element is ruined. If the ohms reading is not stable the element is questionable. 11
Remove the element if the reading is 0 and inspect it. If it is split open it was ruined due to air in the system for an extended period of time. That is not covered under any warranty. If there is no evidence of splitting then your warranty will be in effect if the part is newer than two years.
Diagnostic test for pressure switch. 1. If the ETC does not light up and show the inbound or set temperature when all switches are on there could be a problem at the pressure switch. 2. Turn off the power at the breaker. 3. Measure continuity across the two lead wires on the pressure switch with water flowing thru the heater. If you have continuity the pressure switch is not the problem. If you do not have continuity thru the switch then check the pressure gauge on your pool filter to be sure there is over 3 PSI of pressure in the system. If there is over three PSI in the system and the pressure switch does not engage(have continuity) you need to replace the pressure switch. Diagnostic test for the thermostats. 1. Turn off the power at the breaker. 2. Check for continuity across the two poles of all four thermostats. 3. If you have continuity they work and are not the problem. If you do not have continuity they need to be replaced. Diagnostic test for the Electronic Temperature Control. 1. If every other part is working and the ETC does not light up then it will need to be replaced. 2. You should bypass(jump out) the pressure switch to determine if the ETC is the problem.
