Tester: Wiesbaden, 1-1 95582944 03/01/15e DATA SHEET KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 2 2.1 GENERAL Measuring temperatures using Infrared Radiation Thermometers Above a temperature of absolute zero, which is approx. - 273 °C or 0 K, all bodies emit electromagnetic radiation, the wavelength and density of which depend on the temperature. Up to a temperature of approx. 600 °C, the wavelength of the radiation can be found exclusively within the infrared range (thermal radiation). It is only at higher temperatures where part of this radiation is emitted in the form of visible light. The radiation emitted by the body (radiation density) also depends on the surface of the individual body. At a fixed temperature, the maximum radiation density is emitted by a "blackbody" source of radiation. All real bodies only emit a fraction of this radiation density at the same temperature. The ratio of this fractional part to the maximum radiation density is called the emissivity ε. Naturally, the emissivity is always < 1. It depends on the nature of the surface of the material, on the material itself and on the wavelength. If the emissivity is known, the temperature of the object can be determined by measuring the infrared radiation emitted by the very object. Devices used to measure this kind of radiation are called Infrared Radiation Thermometers. As the measurement is effected without the Infrared Radiation Thermometer being in contact with the object, no distortion of the temperature field due to heat dissipation need to be feared, as is the case, e.g., with probe-type thermometers. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer is a measuring transducer, which receives the infrared radiation emitted by the measuring object itself and transforms it into a standardized output signal. All optic and electronic components are located in a small housing of a solid construction, which is made from die-cast metal so that the installation of a Infrared Radiation Thermometer is possible even in narrow spaces. By selecting a number of various lenses and detectors, it is possible to generously modify the measuring field, if the measuring distance is given. For the application of the Infrared Radiation Thermometer under high ambient temperature, water-cooling, air purge fittings and vacuum tight lenses can be delivered as accessories. 2-1 95582944 02/03/14e GENERAL KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 2.2 Infrared Radiation Thermometers for GENERAL APPLICATION The Infrared Radiation Thermometers series KT15.81 II / KT15.82 II /KT15.83 II are used to measure surface temperatures within a temperature range of - 50 °C to 1000 °C. The spectral sensitivity can be found within the range of the atmospheric window, which is between 8 and 14 µm. As the atmospheric transmissivity is very high in this spectral range, no weakening of the infrared radiation due to CO2 or to water vapor contained in the air is to be expected. To meet especially high requirements as to the transmission of the atmosphere as it is a case e.g. when carrying out meteorological measurements Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.85 II is suitable. The KT15.81 II / KT15.82 II / KT15.83 II can be employed in the measuring of temperatures during the production and processing of plastics, rubber, paper, textiles, paint, ceramics etc. The emissivity of various metals is shown in figure 10 (chapter 8: Illustrations). The devices can also be used to measure the temperature of objects exposed to infrared radiation, since the radiation maximum of infrared radiators is within the range of shorter wavelengths, which do not cause the Infrared Radiation Thermometers KT15.81 II / KT15.82 II / KT15.83 II to react. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.81 II is used in the spectral range of 8 to 10 μm. Besides being used for large-surface measurement, this Infrared Radiation Thermometer type is also suitable for measuring thick foils. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.82 II is applied for the standard measuring range of 8 to 14 µm thereby guaranteeing a good signal resolution. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.83 II provides a particularly high signal resolution owing to its large spectral range. Therefore, it is very well suited for measuring low temperatures. For high requirements on the transmission of the atmosphere, such as found in meteorological measurements, the KT15.85 II type is available. This device type operates within the spectral ranges of 9.6 to 11.5 µm, where the transmission of the atmosphere is extremely high. 2-2 95582944 02/03/14e GENERAL KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 2.3. Infrared Radiation Thermometers for measuring METALS The spectral emissivity of the Infrared Radiation Thermometers KT15.01 II / KT15.02 II is 2 to 2.7 µm and 2 to 4.5 µm. Within this spectral range, metals and metal-oxides show a relatively high spectral emissivity. This is why the device is particularly well suited to measure the temperatures of these materials. Since the atmospheric transmissivity is high within the spectral range of 2 to 2.7 µm, distortions of the measured value owing to absorption of water vapor and CO2 in the air can be ignored (Fig. 11, ILLUSTRATIONS). The Infrared Radiation Thermometer type KT15.01 II is used for measuring temperatures from 300 °C onwards; the Infrared Radiation Thermometer type KT15.02 II is suitable for measuring temperatures from 200 °C onwards. Temperatures from 500 °C respectively 700 °C onwards are preferably measured by means of the spectral pyrometers of the series KT18S or the quotient pyrometers of the series KT18R. 2.4 Infrared Radiation Thermometers for measuring PLASTICS These types of Infrared Radiation Thermometers are employed for the measuring of surface temperatures of plastics within a temperature range of 0 to 600 °C. These Infrared Radiation Thermometers are equipped with narrow-band infrared filters. KT15.21 II measures radiation at 3.43 µm, KT15.23 II measures radiation at 6.8 µm, KT15.24 II measures radiation at 7.93 µm, KT15.25 II measures radiation at 8.05 µm. Within these spectral ranges, virtually all synthetic materials have strong absorption bands so that even thin foils show high emissivity. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.21 II is suitable for most foils from 100 °C onwards. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.23 II measures thin foils made from polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutane, polynitrile, polystyrene and similar materials from 0 °C onwards. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15.24 II and KT 19.25 II measure thin foils polyester as well as foils made from - acrylic, - cellulose, - fluorine compounds, - polycarbonate, - polyamide, - polyurethane, - polyvinylchloride and similar materials after analysis from 0 °C onwards. 2-3 95582944 02/03/14e GENERAL KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 2.5 Infrared Radiation Thermometers for measuring GLASS KT15.42 II is suitable for measuring glass and quartz. The spectral sensitivity is 4.9 to 5.5 µm. The emissivity of glass is very similar to the emissivity of a blackbody radiator within this spectral range. Furthermore, this spectral range eliminates any disturbing influences resulting from the strong absorption bands of water vapor at 6.2 µm. The Infrared Radiation Thermometers KT15.01 II and KT15.41 II are not measuring the surface but the average value of temperatures up to a certain penetration depth (glass volume). The lower limits are 300 °C for KT15.01 II and 400 °C for KT15.41 II. The types KT15.42 II and KT15.43 II measure the surface temperature from 100 °C respectively from 0 °C onwards. 2.6 Infrared Radiation Thermometers for measuring GASES By means of narrow-band filters, the selective measurement of temperature of certain gases is possible. A rather long response time is to be chosen since the radiation energy is very low. KT15.21 II measures hydrocarbon from 100 °C onwards. KT15.62 II measures materials within the absorption range of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, KT15.63 II measures carbon monoxide selectively, KT15.64 II is provided for nitrogen oxide and KT15.69 II has been especially developed for determination of combustion temperatures. Using KT15.41 II, objects can be measured through gases and flames from 400 °C onwards. 2-4 95582944 02/03/14e GENERAL KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 3 TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Spectral sensitivity:  DATA SHEET Temperature measuring range:  DATA SHEET Temperature resolution:  Tables (Page 3-7ff) Accuracy (provided that the emissivity has been correctly set, after a warm-up period of 15 min.): ± 0.5 °C plus 0.7 % of the temperature difference between the housing containing the measuring instruments and the object to be measured or: value of temperature resolution. If the environmental temperatures are higher than that mentioned above, cooling fittings can be used. Basically, the cooling jacket WK15 can be cooled with air or water. The possible maximum environmental temperatures are higher for water cooling than for air cooling ( individual Data Sheet). If the cooling process is too strong, i.e. if the cooling air / cooling water is too cold, this may result in condensate as soon as cooling medium falls below the dew point. To prevent this from occurring, the cooling air / cooling water must have a minimum temperature as a function of the relative humidity. The following table specifies the minimum temperature of the cooling air / cooling water as a function of the environmental temperature and the relative humidity of the environmental air. For applications desiring a minimum target area to be measured, the measuring field diameter will define at what distance the smallest measured target diameter will be. For optical adjustment of the measuring object further accessories are available ( OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES). 4.5.1 Aiming via focus laser The illumination of the measured target diameter via the focus laser is switched on/off the "keyboard". At works the focus laser is set for the mounted lens. This means that there will be a reticule with circle at the minimum target diameter for the mounted objective indicating the target size and position. In case other objectives are attached to the Infrared Radiation Thermometer, the focus laser is no longer adjusted, i.e. neither the position nor the size of the target diameter is indicated correctly. 4.5.2 Aiming via pilot laser ATTENTION Please observe the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. A pilot laser can be integrated into the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15 II in case a lens is used which is transparent to visible light. It marks the centre of the target diameter for the objective which has been mounted at works. It is not possible to show the minimum target diameter with this option. 4.5.3 Aiming via Laserpointer LP15 For lenses of type Kx, a laserpointer is required ( OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES), which is to be attached to lens Kx. The laser marks the centre of the measuring field within a distance between 0.5 m and 5 m. 4-3 95582944 05/03/14e START-UP KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 4.6 Installation of Protective Cooling Jacket WK15 Installation of protective cooling jacket WK15 with integrated air purge for different applications in connection with adapter B4-B2 and B4-B7-B2 Fitting for air purge * Fitting for cooling jacket *  Please, use only the marked connection for the respective combination! 4-4 95582944 04/07/13e START-UP KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5 OPERATION AND APPLICATION Configuration The Infrared Radiation Thermometers series KT15 II can be adapted to the process by means of parameterization. The adaptation is carried out via the keyboard or via the digital interface. The operation via keyboard is described in the following. The communication via interface is carried out analog to it. 5.0 Application 5.0.1 Check routines Check routines detect errors and indicate such errors. ► Interface error Errors arising with the communication via the serial interface, are automatically output via the latter as text. ► Error of measuring range Errors arising due to the overflow or underflow of the range limits are also given via the analog output. Overflow and underflow is indicated at the display. If KT15 II interface is programmed for temperature output, an error message is output instead of a temperature value. The configured signal of the analog output is switched to the maximum value in case of overflow (OF) (approx. 5 % above range limit value), and to the minimum value in case of underflow (UF) (approx. 5 % below range limit value at voltage output, approx. 0.396 % at current output). The following cases are monitored: Overflow (OF) 1. 5. The measuring temperature is above the instrument measuring range. The internal temperature is above the permissible sensor temperature. The external ambient temperature is above the instrument measuring range. The voltage at the external temperature input is above the operating range (0 to 10 V). Data memory is partly destroyed. 6. Initialization error of the instrument. 2. 3. 4. 95582944 07/02/15e Underflow (UF) 1. The measuring temperature is below the instrument measuring range. 2. The internal temperature is below the permissible sensor temperature. 3. The external ambient temperature is below the instrument measuring range. 4. The voltage at the external temperature input is below the operating range (0 to 10 V). 5. Rotational speed of the modulator is outside the limit. 6. Internal miscalculation. 5-1 OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5.0.2 Continuous measurement of ambient temperature For continuous measurement of the ambient temperature, a 0 to 10 V signal which is proportional to the ambient temperature must be fed in at terminal C and D of the 12-pole connector. The configuration of the input must be programmed with EasyConfig: Minimum temperature value corresponding to 0 V, Maximum temperature value corresponding to 10 V. For the transmission of the measured temperature, a module which is recommended for the sensor is needed.  OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES. The figure shows the connection of a module with PT100 in three-wire technique to an Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15 II. ATTENTION The device must be provided for 'Analog input'. 5-2 95582944 06/03/14e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5.0.3 Use of the digital input If the device is equipped with the option 'digital input', this option can be used for remote control of one of the programmable functions as described below, or a connecting cable with integrated switch can be used. The option 'digital input' must be programmed at the factory. ( Data Sheet Page 1-1 ) 5.0.3.1 Remote control functions via the digital input Remote control is done by means of a floating contact 'open collector' or a voltage. Standard is status control. The input is active (ON) at 0 V to 1 V and inactive (OFF) from 4 V to 30 V respectively in open condition. 5.0.3.2 Switch integrated in connecting cable Alternatively for the remote control a switch can be integrated in the connecting cable. Then remote control via the contact is no longer possible. 5.0.3.3 Programmable functions  Turning on the laser If the laser is installed and enabled by the interface command 'LASER...' (ENABLE), the laser can be switched on via digital input. Example: 0 V or short circuit switches the laser on.  Reset of the peak values The device continuously updates a maximum and a minimum value memory. With the digital input the values can be reset to the actual value. The function is helpful in case the analog output is programmed by the command 'OUT…' for reproduction of a peak value. Example: 0 V resets the maximum value memory to the actual value.  Reset of the digital outputs If it is configured, the digital outputs can be reset via the digital input to the inactive state.  5.0.4 Use of the digital outputs  DESCRIPTION OF COMMANDS: Command 2.14: Configuration of the digital outputs Example: 0 V will reset the digital output. 5-3 95582944 05/03/12e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5.0.4 Use of the digital outputs The digital outputs display the alarm status of the Infrared Radiation Thermometer via the active level. The digital outputs can be configured that either 'Low' alarm or 'High' alarm or both alarms are transmitted. The digital outputs are also configurable as a synchronization output for the function 'Self-reset' of the maximum and minimum value memories. 'Inverse Logic' or 'Not Inverse Logic' can also be selected. For the reset of the digital output the following configurations can be selected: • Reset by command • Reset by digital input • Reset by lower deviation of alarm level • Reset by expiration of a programmable time • Reset after lower deviation or exceed of threshold temperature  5.0.3 Use of the digital input  DESCRIPTION OF COMMANDS: Command 2.12: Configuration of digital input Command 2.14: Configuration of digital outputs 5.0.5 Monitoring the device function during operation Monitoring the operating temperature The series KT15 II Infrared Radiation Thermometers have a built-in temperature switch which opens at ≥ 70 °C. This switch is connected to the flange-plug ( chapter 3). Monitoring the analog output signal The type of the output signal can be selected for the series KT15 II Infrared Radiation Thermometers. For monitoring the output signal the '4 - 20 mA' type is recommended. At this setting a measuring temperature within the set temperature range will supply a signal between 4 and 20 mA. If the value falls below the calibrated temperature range, refer to the type sheet, ≤ 3.95 mA is supplied, and ≥ 21 mA is supplied if it is exceeded. Monitoring the power consumption The series KT15 II Infrared Radiation Thermometers draw a current of 90 mA to 150 mA at 24 V during operation. If this value is out of range, this indicates misbehaviour. Monitoring during operation with a serial interface For monitoring the Infrared Radiation Thermometer we recommend that the serial interface should be switched to the 'send the measured temperature value repeatedly'. As long as the Infrared Radiation Thermometer functions, the temperature value will be sent at the defined time interval. If it is out of range, the Infrared Radiation Thermometer will provide an error message. 5-4 95582944 06/03/14e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5.0.6 Use of the maximum and minimum value memories The configuration of these parameters can be done by the software EasyConfig or EasyMeas. The maximum and minimum value memories are continually updated by the Infrared Radiation Thermometer. The stored data can be read by command, and also switched to the analog output. → Commands for 'Memory functions' → Commands for 'Configuration of analog output' If cyclically the temperature of moving material has to be determined by using the maximum or minimum value memory, the relevant memory must be reduced by a decay rate to the current measured value, or reset. 5.0.6.1 Decay rate With the command 'OUT..' the decay rate can be programmed. 5.0.6.2 Reset of memory (manually controlled) 5.0.6.2.1 Reset with the command 'MEM RESET' 5.0.6.2.2 Reset via digital input For this the digital input must be programmed at the factory. Furthermore, the function memory reset must be programmed with the command 'CONFig DIGin..'. 5.0.6.3 Self-reset If an external reset signal is not available, the Infrared Radiation Thermometer generates this automatically. It offers alternatively the self-reset after a reset time, as well as after falling below a temperature threshold. 5.0.6.3.1 Reset after lower deviation of threshold temperature If there is a space (gap) between the targets, and the background temperature deviates to a sufficient extent of the temperature of the target, the Infrared Radiation Thermometer can generate the reset signal automatically. Therefore in the case of the maximum value memory the background temperature must be lower than the temperature of the target, in the case of the minimum value memory the background temperature must be higher than the temperature of the target. For synchronization of the evaluation, the generated reset signal can be switched to the digital output. The edge change occurs by exceeding (reset point maximum value memory) and falling below Tlim; the minimum value memory accordingly reversed (see figures 1 + 2). By selecting 'MANUAL' or 'AUTO' mode, the self-reset of the memories is activated. The device detects a 'temperature gap' between two targets and resets maximum or minimum value memory at the end of the gap. 5-5 95582944 08/07/16e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH ● Mode 'MANUAL' uses a programmable temperature threshold (Tlim ) for detecting the gap. ● Mode 'AUTO' determines Tlim automatically with the average of the maximum and minimum values. In this mode a reset time tres can be configured additionally. If during that time no target has been detected, the maximum resp. minimum value memory will be reset. If the time-controlled reset is not needed, the maximum reset time of 600 s should be adjusted. If the maximum value memory is enabled, the reset is done when Tlim is exceeded again. If the minimum value memory is enabled, the reset is done when Tlim has fallen below (see figures 1 + 2). → Commands 'Configuration of digital output' in Universal Protocol. Please note: The time constant of the device may be set to auto-reset function only as large as the measurement is not distorted by integration! The extended memory configuration can be provided both via the digital interface and the analog output. Via the extended configuration of the analog output, the maximum or minimum value memory can be switched to the analog output. → Commands 'Configuration of analog output' in Universal Protocol. 5-6 95582944 08/07/16e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH Example: Self-reset with maximum value memory, MANUAL mode Background Thick product Thin product Figure 1: Measurement Figure 2: Signal curve 5.0.6.3.2 Reset after reset time The maximum or minimum value memories can be reset alternatively after the expiration of a programmable time. The reset time is retriggered automatically, when the value of the activated maximum value memory rises, resp. minimum value memory falls. This feature can be selected for only one of the memory types. 5-7 95582944 08/07/16e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 5.1 Operation via keyboard With the configuration menu, the most important parameters are set or interrogated. Some RS232 drivers use DTR instead of RTS for the handshake. In this case, CTS of Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II must be connected to DTR of the computer. The transfer parameters baud rate, number of data bits, parity, stop bits and delimiter are set by means of the operating keys at the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II. These parameters are to be set to equal values as for the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II and the computer. Selectable baud rates: 9.6 kBaud 19.2 kBaud 38.4 kBaud 57.6 kBaud 115.2 kBaud Possible data formats: Number of data bits: 7 or 8 Number of stop bits: 1 or 2 Parity: even, uneven or none The Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II is able to receive data with one stop bit independent of the setting. For transmission, the selected number of stop bits is inserted. 5.2.2 Using the interface 5.2.2.1 Control of communication Data transfer from evaluation to Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II The ready-to-receive state of the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II is signalized via line RTS. The coding shown in the following table shall apply. 5-20 95582944 15/03/14e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH Function RTS-state ready-to-receive on (high) evaluation of a command off (low) receive buffer overflow off (low) Data which are sent during the RTS-state is OFF are lost. Data transfer from Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II for evaluation purposes Before the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II sends a message, the CTS input is checked. If the CTS-state is on (high), the whole message including the selected delimiter is sent. ● Commands The individual commands are transmitted as a text in ASCII characters. As for instruction characters, only the first three characters will be checked, numerical values are accepted with or without fractional parts, blanks must not be filled in between operational sign and numerical value. An answer is only given in case of interrogation (?). If a command cannot be read, an error message will be output. If parameters are not found to be within the permissible range of values (e.g. left-hand end of extent < right-hand end of extent), the command will not be executed and an error message will be output. ● Delimiter ↵ Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II identifies the ASCII control characters carriage return (0D) and line feed (0A) as end of instruction. As soon as the end of instruction has been recognized, KT15II will reset the ready-toreceive state (RTS) until the command is evaluated. The answer of the Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II is (0D). ● Input buffer Infrared Radiation Thermometer KT15II has an input buffer of 40 characters. When a longer command has been received, KT15II issues an error message. 5.2.3 Description of the commands The commands for programming the parameters are described in separate instructions: Universal Protocol Communication via Serial Interface for all digital HEITRONICS Infrared Radiation Thermometers 5-21 95582944 15/03/14e OPERATION AND APPLICATION KT15II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 6 MAINTENANCE AND CALIBRATION 6.1 General information The design of HEITRONICS Infrared Radiation Thermometers provides for a long period of service without the necessity of special maintenance. It is advisable to check the display accuracy approximately every three months. Measuring errors may arise, for instance, owing to pollution of the lens. For this reason, this component should first of all be cleaned. 6.2 Cleaning the lens For this purpose a cleaning- and servicing kit is available (→ OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES). Fine dust can be brushed off by means of a lens brush or blown off the lens carefully. Do not use compressed air or canned compressed air which could cause residues on the objective. If the lens is heavily soiled and has greasy deposits, a microfiber cloth, cotton tabs and the special lens cleaner will help cleaning it, after having used the lens brush. 6.3 Testing the display accuracy The display accuracy of the Infrared Radiation Thermometer can be checked by means of a blackbody calibration source. This test is carried out within the range indicated on the type plate. It is advisable to carry out the test under high temperature. For this purpose, the Infrared Radiation Thermometer is placed in front of a black body calibration source so that the integrated optical equipment is focused on the radiator. The temperature of the black body calibration source must be determined. If a black body calibration Source of type HEITRONICS SW15 (→ OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES) is used, it has to be mounted to the lens. The Infrared Radiation Thermometer has to be connected to an appropriate power supply. Approximately 15 minutes after appliance of the supply voltage the Infrared Radiation Thermometer is ready for calibration. For checking we recommend to use the following minimum temperatures: Model KT15.01 II KT15.02 II KT15.21 II KT15.23 II KT15.24 II KT15.25 II KT15.41 II KT15.42 II KT15.43 II KT15.62 II KT15.63 II KT15.69 II KT15.81 II KT15.82 II KT15.83 II KT15.85 II Recommended minimum temperature °C 580 to 600 580 to 600 280 to 300 130 to 150 130 to 150 130 to 150 580 to 600 330 to 350 130 to 150 580 to 600 580 to 600 580 to 600 80 to 100 80 to 100 80 to 100 80 to 100 6-1 95582944 03/07/16e MAINTENANCE AND CALIBRATION KT15 II HEITRONICS Infrarot Messtechnik GmbH 8 FIGURES Nr.
