Delivery and Connection Information Pages 32-36 2 1. introduction The portfolio gives information on product type, size and specifications of awarded items. As this is a crisis grants programme, Save the Children aims to deliver the awarded item(s) in the swiftest time possible and therefore actual item, make, model, colour or material will vary and is dependent on stock availability. The product range is selected to meet the essential needs of young children in the home. Products will: • be suitable for the well-being and development of children • have a positive impact on a child’s ability to eat, sleep, learn and play • be able to help families meet everyday living costs, who are unable to purchase/replace these essential household items themselves • be brand new, physical items • be a standard size, model and specification • be of a reputable make • be of a high quality • be good value for money • be fit for purpose • last a long time, be durable and hard wearing • meet exacting health and safety criteria • be non-gender specific • be energy efficient in the case of white goods • be educationally stimulating in the case of books and toys and promote coordination, dexterity and be emotionally & physically challenging • be logistically easy for Save the Children to source and to deliver, and connect, if needed to all parts of the UK • ensure families have the same consumer rights as other high-street shoppers 3 2. checklist for referral partners Gas and Electric Cookers • Is there an existing product in place?  If yes, identify the type of existing appliance e.g. gas or electric? – if an item needs replacing, referral partners must always highlight the same compliant product type (gas for gas, electric for electric)  If no, is there access to an existing suitable compliant gas or electrical point? If there is no gas appliance in place, the gas supply will have been capped by law. In these cases, an application for a gas cooker can be made but Save the Children can only be responsible for the delivery (but not the connection). An engineer can uncap the gas supply but all liability for the connection and after sales service will be the responsibility of the applicant. Alternatively, an application for an electric cooker could be made, provided that the appropriate dedicated electrical power source is available (cooker point with red on/off switch). • Is there enough space for the product? (The dimensions for each product as listed in the specifications) • Is there a power point within 1 metre of where the appliance will need to be connected? (It is not possible to connect an appliance which is positioned more than 1 metre away from the power source, as this is the longest the connection lead is) • Is any remedial carpentry/electrical work required? If so, this must be completed in advance of submitting a grant application.White goods engineers can only connect appliances and are unable to carry out any other remedial work. 4 2. checklist for referral partners Washing machines • Is there an existing product in place? If possible, please check for signs of leaks. Even if there is no immediate evidence of a leak i.e. dripping water, discolouration of flooring or the surrounding area could indicate a long term problem. If in doubt seek professional attention prior to placing your grant application • Is there enough space for the product? • Is there access to an existing suitable water connection with stop tap? • Is there a standard 1metre waste pipe (that has not been extended) within reach of the water supply? • Is there a power point within 1 metre of where the appliance needs to be connected? (It is not possible to connect an appliance which is positioned more than 1 metre away from the power source, as this is the longest the connection lead is) • Is any remedial carpentry/electrical work required? If so, this must be completed in advance of submitting a grant application.White goods engineers can only connect appliances and are unable to carry out any other remedial work. Under-counter Fridges, under-counter freezers and free-standing fridge-freezers • Is there enough space for the product? • Is there an existing fridge, freezer or fridge/freezer that needed to be taken away for recycling? If so, this needs to be emptied of food, fully defrosted and disconnected at least 24 hours before delivery and collection can be made. 5 3. Delivery and connection information White goods – Washing machines, Gas and Electric cookers, Under-counter fridges and Under-counter freezers The family will be advised during the initial needs assessment application call which item has been awarded and an order will be placed for that item while the family is on the call. Delivery can sometimes be made on the next day but this may not be the most suitable day for the family. The family will be asked to select the most convenient date (from three options) to suit them – this is to ensure there are no failed deliveries. On the evening prior to the agreed delivery date, a text message will be sent to the family to advise of a 60 minute time slot for the delivery of the white good. Connection of washing machines will be made at the time of delivery, as long as all the relevant pipework etc. is in place. (Please see Page 5 for full details). If an old washing machine is to be taken away, this will be done once the new machine has been connected up and is in good working order. Connection of the gas and electric cookers will take place on a different day. Within a couple of days of delivery of the gas/electric cooker, the family will be contacted by a engineer to arrange a convenient day/time to carry out the connection. Should the agreed time slot for the delivery and/or connection no longer be convenient, the family will need to call the telephone number in the text message to re-arrange a more suitable re-delivery/connection day and time. Connection of gas and electric cookers can only be made by a qualified engineer employed on behalf of Save the Children or a third party working on their behalf, to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations; and all relevant warranties remain intact. (Please see Page 4 for full details). Connection will usually take place within two days of delivery being made. Families will receive a text the day before the connection is due to take place advising them of the time slot. Once the cooker has been connected and tested to be working properly, the old cooker will be taken away, if requested All white good items carry a 12 month warranty. 32 26. Delivery and connection information Gas and electric cookers (2 visits required) On the 1st visit, a delivery agent will:  unpack and check the appliance for damage  position the appliance in the customer’s room of choice or in the space (in the room) allocated for the item, if no existing appliance in situ On the 2nd visit, an engineer will:  verify there are no obvious leaks  carry out a full assessment of the connection area  make sure all existing services (gas & electricity) are in the correct place for the connection If upon assessment, any remedial work is required it will not be possible to carry out the connection.  disconnect the old appliance and connect the new cooking appliance to a compliant, existing point to the manufacturers specification (See Page 4 for full details)  ensure the customer has the instruction manual and advise the importance of reading this and keeping it in a safe place for future reference  test the appliance once connected.  demonstrate how the main functions of the appliance work If the appliance is not working correctly this will be reported straight away, the new appliance removed, and a replacement delivered and connected as soon as possible. If the old appliance is working this will be re-connected.  Remove the old appliance, if requested, and dispose of it in accordance with legislation. 33 26. An age-specific book pack will be made up and posted out to the family. This will be delivered by courier to the family home. If the family is not home on the day of delivery, the courier will leave the pack in a safe place for the family to collect when they arrive home. The courier company will leave a calling card stating where the pack has been left or stating that delivery will be attempted again on the following two days. If neither of the following two days are suitable for the family, they can call the number on the calling card to arrange a re-delivery at another more convenient time. Should the item not be in the safe place as described on the card, the family will need to call the helpline to arrange for another delivery to occur.
