Cisco Unity complements the full range of IP Communications solutions by providing advanced capabilities for unifying data and voice communication. Also, because it is enabled by Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) and designed for a converged network, Cisco Unity provides a solid foundation for rolling out future convergence-based communications services. SIMPLIFY ADMINISTRATION, REDUCE COSTS The components of Cisco Unity extend the power of Microsoft Exchange Server and Lotus Notes Domino server by eliminating the inefficiencies and the limitations imposed by multiple and “integrated” messaging systems, and simplifies access and management. Cisco Unity uses Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes Domino message store and directory services to unify system administration, collecting all messages into a single store and providing you with a single address directory service. By sharing a single directory with the data network, Cisco Unity eliminates redundant user account information required by various applications—such as e-mail and voice-mail systems. Cisco Unity saves time in initial installation by importing the Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes Domino accounts directory to automatically create subscriber lists. With the Cisco Unity, all messages are centrally stored, administered, and controlled, dramatically reducing the amount of time spent on support and maintenance, and minimizing the traffic on your LAN. At the same time, Cisco Unity also uses the Cisco Unity Message Repository (UMR) to safeguard message store integrity if Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes Domino goes offline. Cisco Unity UMR enables Cisco Unity to continue taking new voice messages when the e-mail system or network is offline. System subscribers can also retrieve these messages, minimizing service disruption. Cisco Unity takes full advantage of powerful Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes Domino features such as digital networking, automatic message replication, message rules, foldering, and inbox assistant support. Through Microsoft Exchange or Domino’s e-mail gateway services, Cisco Unity can also work with e-mail clients that support Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) or Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), and Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4). AN EASY-TO-USE, BROWSER-STYLE INTERFACE Cisco Unity features an award-winning graphical interface that gets users operating as quickly as possible, resulting in greater productivity for your organization. Moreover, Cisco Unity simplifies system administration with its embedded Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), single message store, and single directory service, providing superior performance and reliability. In addition to housing data in a central store, administration tasks can be handled conveniently from a Web-based system administration console that IT staff can access from any networked PC using Internet Explorer. The Cisco Unity system administration console minimizes the complexity of Microsoft Windows 2000 using either Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes Domino so you do not have to be a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) to administer the system. This interface integrates with Microsoft Windows 2000 through the use of snapin HTML, and allows Cisco Unity to be configured and monitored from anywhere on the Internet using Internet Explorer. The results for your environment will vary depending on how your environment is configured and how much data is being protected. A good approach to characterizing backup and recovery performance requires learning the general software architecture, how each agent component interacts with the protected system, while contrasting this to the actual volume of data being backed up. Other factors that may affect performance can include initial system sizing, backup design decisions, as well as the more easily understood interactions of tape drive, LAN performance, and CPU load. VERITAS Software provides specific product tuning recommendations within the product documentation and via technical bulletins. Managing recovery performance will require an understanding of your company’s service level agreements for allowable system down time and required system recovery time objectives. Recovery Time Objective (RTO) for backup and recovery can typically be considered in the range of hours, as opposed to seconds with other technologies. RTO should be modeled by performing regular recovery and disaster recovery tests simulating real world data loss scenarios. Performing disaster recovery tests is the only way to ensure total readiness for any data loss event, where preparedness and execution is paramount. After the initial backup product environment is designed, installed, and tested, you should plan on making the time to include full and partial recovery tests, system replacement tests, and bare metal disaster recovery tests. VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS NetBackup For servers running Cisco Unity, a full restore using Backup Exec software could typically be performed in a few hours if required. This example may not take into consideration the messaging stores or other types of recovery. Your exact backup performance is dependent on many factors. For the restore of the dependent messaging environment, performance for recovery can vary significantly. For example, in a centralized Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino message store model, there may be generally larger volumes of Unified message data, potentially across several Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino servers. The first consideration for any recovery plan is to anticipate the specific type of data loss you might encounter, and the actions that will be required to recovery the necessary data in the quickest way possible. For example, will you be required to perform a full Microsoft Exchange or IBM Domino server message store recovery? Perhaps the system can be restored by a single application file or directory? Perhaps only a single user message mailbox or message needs to be recovered? The key to successful data protection management of the Cisco Unity environment will be to understand the application data well enough to determine the minimal recovery requirements, as well as how to perform these recoveries with the selected VERITS data protection product. Considerations for planning for a “full message store” is dependent on the message server architecture and message store size. Good planning limits the message store size to meet your company’s recovery service level agreement. Additionally, smaller, more granular mailbox and message level recoveries are possible with a Microsoft Exchange message store. However, these recoveries will require multiple backup images, first for the information store, followed by the mailbox level backup. This extra time can affect the backup window and media/tape consumption. Familiarity with these procedures will enable faster recovery of the correct information requested for full recovery. End users should practice their Cisco Unity infrastructure recovery plan, including the consideration of Microsoft SQL Server table recovery and Microsoft Windows 2000 file and system state recovery. The Cisco Unity user should perform a pre-production or test system recovery prior to your Cisco Unity roll out. Copyright (c) 2004 VERITAS Software Corporation. All rights reserved.
