Reinstall the Remote RMM-800 top cover, and reinsert and tighten the screws in the top and back panels. Step 2: Install Mounting Flanges and Tie Bar The Remote RMM-800 is designed for installation in a 19-inch or 23-inch equipment rack using mounting flanges which attach to each side of the device. The Remote can be equipped with an optional tie bar used for cable management which is installed at the same time as the mounting flanges. Note: Order part # RMM-800-T to obtain the cable tie bar with this Remote. Order part # 06-535-003 to obtain the cable tie bar separately. Page 14 WESTELL.COM 1-800-377-8766 Remote RMM-800 Installation Guide Installation Figure 1-6 Mounting flanges oriented to install Remote RMM-800 flush with the face of a 19-inch rack, top, or a 23-inch rack, bottom. To install Remote RMM-800 flush with the rack face, use screws to attach the mounting flanges to the three openings near the front of the device as shown in Figure 1-6. Orient the short and long sides of the mounting brackets as needed to fit the rack width. The installer can place the Remote RMM-800 to protrude from the front of the rack or to be recessed behind the front by changing the flange orientation and/or by attaching the flanges to the openings at the rear of each side. The optional tie bar (available with RMM-800-T) needs to be attached to the Remote at this time also. The tie bar can be attached in various ways. The installer needs to consider the available rack space, the location of other equipment, and the customer’s Page 15 WESTELL.COM 1-800-377-8766 Remote RMM-800 Installation Guide Installation instructions to determine the best placement of the tie bar to help manage the site cabling. Step 3: Attach Remote RMM-800 to Wall or Rack To attach Remote RMM-800 to a wall, attach the flanges to the openings at the rear of each side, oriented so the other side of the flanges are flush with the rear of the device. The Remote RMM-800 can then be attached to a wall with screws turned through openings on the flanges. For rack mounting, install mounting screws and lock washers into the mounting holes and tighten firmly to the face of the rack. No space is required between Remote RMM800 and any component above or below Remote RMM-800. Step 4: Attach Chassis Ground Connect the chassis ground on the front face of Remote RMM-800 to a suitable ground such as the frame ground of a rack system or a reliable earth ground. CAUTION: The chassis ground must be connected to the same earthing electrode conductor as the DC supply system or to a bonding jumper (from an earthing terminal or bus) connected to the earthing electrode of the DC supply system. The chassis must be located in the same immediate area (such as adjacent cabinets) as other equipment connected to the same DC power system and earthing electrode conductor. The DC system cannot be earthed elsewhere. The DC power source must be located in the same premises as the chassis. No switching or disconnecting devices can occur between the earthed conductor of the DC source and the earthing electrode conductor.  Notes: For ground connection, use 14AWG or larger conductor. Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the bare conductors before crimping the connector to the connector mating surface. Page 16 WESTELL.COM 1-800-377-8766 Remote RMM-800 Installation Guide Installation Step 5: Connect DC Power Input WARNING: Turn off the power feed before connecting wires. Connect the input power feed to the power supply connector. Be careful to observe polarity. Caution: A readily accessible disconnect device (suitably approved and rated) must be incorporated in the field wiring. Unscrew these two screws to remove the power connector, if necessary. To connect wires: 1. Turn off power feed. 2. Strip ends of wire 5/16 in. (7 mm). 3. (optional) Using a small flathead screwdriver, loosen screws on sides of power connector on the bottom right front of Remote RMM-800. 4. (optional) Remove power connector. 5. Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the conductor surfaces. Then insert wire into connector and tighten screws.  Notes: Connect power connector to a reliably grounded +/-24-48 VDC safety extralow voltage (SELV) source.   Use 16 AWG copper conductors. Typical circuit fuse: 3 A Page 17 WESTELL.COM 1-800-377-8766 Remote RMM-800 Installation Guide Installation Step 6: Install SFP Transceivers hasp Figure 1-7 Two fiber-optic cables are snapped in place in the SFP transceiver installed at left. The locking hasp is closed and the LED is illuminated. Another transceiver has been installed in the SFP port on the right, with a plug in the unused fiber cable ports. Insert your Westell SFP optical transceivers into place in RMM-800’s SFP ports. If the SFP module has a locking hasp, snap the hasp closed. Keep the stopper plugs in the SFP’s fiber cable ports until you are ready to connect the fiber cables. Step 7: Connect the Port Cables Connect all port cables per your application. For assistance in acquiring cables, contact Westell Customer Assistance. Note: When connecting the communication ports to an external device that does not share the same earth and signal grounding system, an isolation device should be used. Important: Any external device with a serial RS232 connection requires a properly installed isolation device such as a Westell A90-RS232-ISO Surge Protection Device (see Figure 1-8). The A90-RS232-ISO protects the Remote from lightning strikes and power surges from equipment outside the plane of the device, such as a generator. Figure 1-8 An A-90-RS232-ISO Surge Protection Device securely installed in a racked Westell Remote . Page 18 WESTELL.COM 1-800-377-8766 Remote RMM-800 Installation Guide Installation Connecting to an Asynchronous Serial Port Asynchronous serial ports allow terminal devices with asynchronous serial ports (such as PCs, NEs, and asynchronous modems) to connect to Remote RMM-800.
