On the following pages you can read about how to take care of your heat pump. One section is aimed at you, the owner, and one at your installer. Keep this handbook with the installation and maintenance instructions, which will provide you with the information you need to correctly maintain the CTC EcoAir and give you many years of satisfaction. The complete outdoor air heat pump CTC EcoAir is an outdoor air heat pump which takes heat from the outside air and delivers it to the existing heating system of the house. CTC EcoAir works with outside air temperatures down to -20 °C. At and below this temperature, the ordinary heating system takes over building heating. The heat pump can be connected to the CTC EcoEl or to the existing boiler via the CTC EcoLogic Ext control system. CTC EcoAir is designed to operate with high efficiency and with low sound levels. The heat pump has an integrated hot gas defrosting which keeps the evaporator coil free from ice in order to maintain high efficiency. CTC EcoAir Important to remember! Especially check the following points at delivery and installation: ◗ CTC EcoAir must be transported and stored in an upright position. ◗ Remove the packaging. Before installation, check that the heat pump has not been damaged during transport. Notify the forwarding agent of any transport damage. ◗ The heat pump should be positioned so that the compressor and fan disturb the environment as little as possible. ◗ CTC EcoAir has a factory-installed condensation water tray where the condensation water is conducted to a stone curb, surface water gully, down pipe or other drainage. Consequently, consider the position of the product. ◗ The arrangement must be made on concrete- block or bed close to the outer wall. The bedding must be performed for drainage of condensing water and melted snow. Make a stone curb under the outdoor heat pump unit. Remove 50-100 cm and fill up with macadam (crushed stone) in order to optimize the drainage. The outdoor unit must be placed levelled – check with water level. For more information about placement of the product, see chapter ”Pipe installation/Positioning”. ◗ Flexible hoses should be installed closest to the heat pump. Outdoor pipes should be thoroughly insulated with weather-proof insulation. Ensure that pipes between the heat pump and the indoor unit have sufficient dimensions. ◗ Make sure that the charging pump which pumps water to the heat pump has sufficient capacity. Safety instructions The following safety instructions should be followed when handling, installing and using the heat pump: ◗ Ensure that the product is currentless before any interventions. ◗ When handling the product with a crane etc., make sure that the lifting equipment, loops etc. are not damaged. Never place yourself under the elevated product. ◗ Never jeopardize safety by removing bolted covers, hoods or similar. ◗ Never jeopardize safety by putting safety equipment out of order. ◗ Interventions in the electric or cooling system must be done only by a qualified person. CTC EcoAir Installation options CTC EcoAir The illustration below shows the different connection alternatives available for CTC EcoAir: Alternative A: EcoEl is prepared for EcoAir, providing a simple connection. Alternatives B & C: Alternatives B & C: In those cases where EcoAir is to be connected to an existing boiler (oil, wood, electricity, or gas), there are two alternative connection possibilities; in case B, EcoAir is connected via EcoLogic and the same high functionality as in case A is achieved 1). EcoAir can also be connected directly to the boiler/tank with a fixed temperature, which gives limited functionality and savings. 1 ) CTC EcoLogic Ext can control up two three CTC EcoAir. ! When CTC EcoAir is used together with CTC EcoEl or CTC EcoLogic Ext, the program circuit on each display card must have the program version as follows: 080505 or later for CTC EcoEl, 080813 or later for CTC EcoLogic Ext. N OTE Only the EcoLogic model Extended (Ext) may be used for the CTC EcoAir. CTC EcoAir Note! Connection alternative A only applies to the EcoAir 115 A B C CTC EcoLogic Ext CTC EcoEl CTC EcoAir Existing boiler The control panel EcoAir has a control panel positioned behind the service door. In those cases in which EcoAir is connected to either the EcoEl or the EcoLogic, the heat pump setting is adjusted from the control panels on these units. In other words, the control panel on the EcoAir does not need to be used. For more information, please see the instruction manual for the specific product. When EcoAir is connected to a boiler other than EcoEl or EcoLogic, the heat pump settings should be done on the CTC EcoAir control panel. Below is a description of the functions on the control panel. By using the arrow keys you can browse through eight different menus. To get access to the menus, push and hold the OK button for three seconds. Menus 1-6 are displayed for ten minutes, and then the display reverts to the standard display. Control Panel Standard Display: Shows current return temperature (incoming water in EcoAir). Whether or not the heat pump is set to Auto Mode A is also indicated here. Menu 1: The factory setting on EcoAir is Auto Mode A. Auto Mode A: When the heat pump is to be connected to CTC EcoEl or EcoLogic, the EcoAir should be set to auto mode A. If ”A” does not flash in the display, this mode is set as follows: Push and hold the OK button for 3 seconds. Menu 1 is displayed. Push the up arrow until A is displayed. Push and hold the OK button for 3 seconds. The ”A” should now flash in the display = ready. EcoAir set to fixed temperature: When EcoAir is connected in a manner other than the above, the ”A” should not flash in the display. A max. return temperature, at which the heat pump should stop, should be set (setting intervals 20-54 °C). This is done as follows: Push and hold the OK button for 3 seconds. Menu 1 is displayed. Push the down arrow to desired return temperature (the steps under A). Push and hold the OK button for 3 seconds. Only the actual room temperature should now be shown in the display (standard display). Menu 2: Indicates how many degrees the return temperature should be allowed to decrease before the heat pump starts. Setting intervals 5 - 10 °C. (Menu not available in Auto mode) Menu 3: Displays hot gas temperature (°C). Menu 4: Displays outdoor temperature (°C). Menu 5: Displays the latest error. Menu 6: Displays primary flow temperature (°C). CTC EcoAir Operation and maintenance When your new heat pump is installed, you should check the system together with the installer. Let the installer show you the switches, controls and fuses, so that you know how the system works and should be managed. Vent the radiators after approx. three days’ operation, and top up with water if needed. Break in operation The heat pump is turned off with the power switch. If there is a risk of the water freezing, ensure that there is circulation through the heat pump or drain out all the water from CTC EcoAir. The condensation tray is equipped with an electric heating coil which keeps the tray free of ice when it is freezing outside. The condensation water tray is located at the bottom on the back of CTC EcoAir. By lifting the handle and pulling it out, you can clean and inspect the condensation water tray. The drain connection of the product is prepared with a grommet so a heating cable can be installed in the drain pipe, e.g. a self-limiting heating cable. Read more about the condensation water tray in sections Pipe Installation and Electrical installation. Maintenance Remove leaves and debris from the grate above the drain. Clean and wipe the product regularly. Use mild cleaners, e.g. mild soap or washing detergent. Avoid strong solvents in any form. 12 CTC EcoAir Troubleshooting/measures CTC EcoAir is designed to provide reliable operation, high levels of comfort and have a long lifetime. Below you can find a few tips if a breakdown occurs. If a fault occurs, you should always contact the installation contractor who installed your unit. If the contractor believes the malfunction is due to a materials or design fault, the installation contractor will contact us to check and rectify the fault. Always provide the product’s production number. Troubleshooting/measures When faults occur, they are shown in the display window on the control panel (if EcoEl or EcoLogic is used, the failure is also shown on these displays). The following fault codes exist: E1: High pressure switch triggered. E2: Low pressure switch triggered. E3: Motor circuit breaker triggered (E4, E7, 150 and the return temperature flash alternately in the display window). E4: Hot gas sensor error (not connected, short-circuited or outside measuring range). E5: Return sensor error (not connected, short-circuited or outside measuring range). (E5 and 0 flash alternately in the display window.) E6: Outdoor sensor error (not connected, short-circuited or outside measuring range). E7: Hot gas above 130 °C (E7 and the hot gas sensor flash alternately). E8: Primary flow sensor outside measuring range. Temperature below 0 °C or above 80 °C. (E8 and the return temperature flash alternately in the display window). E9: Wrong phase sequence. The alarm can be activated only when menu 1 is set to a fixed return temperature. In auto mode ”A” the phase sequence is checked by CTC EcoEl or CTC EcoLogic. Of the faults that occur all but E8 lead to the product stopping. After a shutdown, the product must be reset for continued operation. Resetting after Alarm To reset the product after an error message, simultaneously push and hold the OK button and the ”down arrow”. (When connected to EcoEl or EcoLogic the product is reset on the indoor unit.) Circulation and Defrosting If the circulation between the indoor and the outdoor unit is reduced or stops, the high pressure switch is triggered. Possible reasons for this: ◗ Defective circulating pump/Circulating pump too small ◗ Air in the line ◗ Clogged condenser ◗ Other intermediate obstructions to the water flow In normal cases the heat pump should be defrosted automatically once an hour. During the defrosting the fan stops but the compressor operates and the condens water flows into the condensation tray under the heat pump. When the defrosting stops, the fan starts again and initially a vapour cloud, consisting of damp air which condenses in the cold outdoor air, is created. This is perfectly normal and stops after a few seconds. If the pump heats poorly, check that no unusual ice formation has occurred. CTC EcoAir 13 Possible reasons for this: ◗ Defective defrosting automation. ◗ Lack of refrigerant (leakage). Check that the sight glass is clean and no gas bubbles are present. ◗ Extreme weather conditions. Remember that CTC EcoAir is an air heat pump which gives less heat during falling outdoor temperatures, while the heating needs of the house increase. During quickly falling temperatures, this means that you can experience a lack of heating power. Air Problems If pouring sounds can be heard from the heat pump, check that the system is well vented. If necessary, fill up with more water so that correct pressure is obtained. If this occurs repeatedly, call a technician to check the system. Current protector CTC EcoAir contains a current protector which trips if the current consumption of the compressor is unusually high. Possible reasons for this error: ◗ Phase failure or mains interference. Check the fuses, the most common cause of failure. ◗ Overloaded compressor. Contact a service technician. ◗ Defective compressor. Contact a service technician. ◗ Defective current protector. Contact a service technician. EcoAir is equipped with start delay in order to avoid the compressor’s operating with intervals that are too short. In the control panel display, the right dot flashes when start delay is activated. The start delay is set to 10 minutes. By simultaneously pushing the ”up arrow” and the ”down arrow”, the start delay can be bypassed, e.g. during service. 14 CTC EcoAir Further information Check that the sight glass is free from gas bubbles during continuous operation (not directly after start or defrosting, since gas bubbles are created in these situations before the operation has been stabilized). Visible and continuous gas bubbles indicate a lack of gas or refrigerant, which gives lower heating effect. Contact service. During that time of the year when the outdoor temperature hovers between - and + °C ice forms on the evaporator/coil. This can be seen at the back of the heat pump where the air enters. If needed, the coil is defrosted automatically every hour. Check that the ice disappears completely after a defrosting. CTC EcoAir works with two fan speeds to avoid unnecessary noise from the product. When the outdoor temperature exceeds 10 °C, the fan speed is reduced to provide a silent operation. When the outdoor temperature is low, the working range of the compressor is limited by reducing the maximum primary flow temperature and the maximum return flow temperature, according to the diagram to the left. At outdoor temperatures above 40 ºC the compressor operation is blocked. The product shall be stored and transported in an upright position. This section is intended for you who are responsible for one or more of the necessary installations in order for the CTC EcoAir to perform according to house owner’s wishes. Take your time to go through functions, controls, knobs and settings with the house owner and answer any questions. Both the heat pump and you benefit from the user’s being perfectly clear on how the system works and should be maintained. Transport Transport the heat pump to the installation place before packaging is removed. Handle CTC EcoAir in one of the following ways: ◗ Forklift ◗ Lifting straps around the pallet. NOTE! Can only be done with the packaging still on the product. Handle with care. Unpacking When the heat pump has been placed next to the installation place, the packaging can be removed. Make sure the product has not been damaged during transport. Notify the forwarding agent of any transport damage. 16 CTC EcoAir Pipe installation ! Should be installed in accordance with existing engineering standards and building regulations. The boiler shall be connected to expansion valve in an open or closed system. Remember to flush the radiator systems before connecting. All installation settings shall be as described in the section Initial Start. Circulating pump minimum 6-metre head. The heat pump works with radiator return temperatures of up to approx. 54 °C and gives 65 °C at most, CTC EcoAir 115 gives at most 64 °C. CTC EcoAir is not damaged if the system has a higher temperature, but the compressor is stopped and the desired savings are lost. When the piping is shorter, as in the case of an EcoAir to an EcoEl, an accumulator tank, etc., we recommend a pump with no less than a 6-metre head, e.g. Wilo RS 25/6 or Grundfos UPS 25-60, which are sufficient in most cases. NOTE! The choice of pump capacity depends entirely on the pressure drop in the system, and must be checked for each individual system. In some systems with EcoLogic, the entire radiator flow must go through the heat pump and the pump must be sized according to the pressure drop in the whole system. For safe operation secure that the minimum flow is obtained: Minimum recommended flow is 1,200 l/h = 0.32 l/s for the EcoAir 115, corresponding flow for the EcoAir 120 is 1 660 l/h= 0,4 l/s and for EcoAir 125 2 200 l/h = 0,56 l/. This gives approximately 10 degrees temperature difference at an outdoor temperature of +7 °C and primary flow temperature of 35 °C (the temperature difference differs very little with a higher primary flow at the same flow). An increased flow gives a lower temperature difference but also higher demands on the circulating pump and pipe dimensions. CTC EcoAir stops when the flow is too low, due to the high pressure switch being triggered. This is avoided by ensuring that all the house’s thermostat valves are always fully open, except in a few rooms such as bedrooms, where cooler temperatures are desired. If thermostat valves are not fitted, the element valves should be open. If there are no thermostat valves, the equivalent radiator valves must be open. The flow across the heating system should be so great that the entire radiator is kept warm in order to increase the heat emitting area. The primary flow temperature can hereby be kept down. 18 CTC EcoAir Wiring diagram CTC EcoAir 115 I 120 I 125 Wiring diagram CTC EcoAir Enertech AB Näsvägen, S-341 26 Ljungby, Sweden www.ctcvarme.se Approx. 400 mm Approx. 400 mm Min. 2 metres Positioning EcoAir has a factory-mounted condensation water tray from which the condensation water shall be routed to a stone curb, surface water gully, down pipe or other drainage. Consequently, consider the position of the product. If the condensation water tray is not used, the foundation must be such that the condensation water and ice water can be drained into the ground. Make a stone curb under the heat pump. Remove 50-100 cm and fill with macadam (crushed stone) in order to optimize the drainage. Remember that the amount of condensation water per day can exceed 40 litres (EcoAir 115)/ 55 litres (EcoAir 120)/ 70 litres (EcoAir 125) under certain conditions. The outdoor unit shall stand straight - verify with a water level. Preferably, the product should be placed on a cast foundation or leg stand close to the house wall. Note that a 200 mm space should be provided underneath for the drain pipe. Respect the distance of 400 mm between wall and product, so that the outdoor air can flow freely through the evaporator and the condensation water tray can be cleared and possibly removed. If the heat pump is installed in a corner, the distance between the gable and the wall should be at least 400 mm. Placement in an outhouse or carport is quite unsuitable, since the air should flow as freely as possible through the heat pump and used air should not to be sucked into the inlet on the back. The distance to bushes etc. in front of the product should be at least 2 metres. The heat pump is designed to be placed outdoors without any extra protection or roof. It should be placed horizontally; verify with a water level. CTC EcoAir 23 Pipe Connection CTC EcoAir ! Remember to provide CTC EcoEl with a drain possibility under the product. Supply and return pipes should be run to the heat pump in accordance with applicable rules. For shorter tube drawings, for instance to EcoEl or to an accumulator tank, we recommend a minimum pipe dimension of ø35 copper tubing (EcoAir 115 and EcoAir 120)/ ø45 (EcoAir 125), at min. recommended flow, to ensure operation. Draw the tubes so that no other higher point is present where air can collect and obstruct circulation. If this has to be done, however, provide this highest point with automatic de-aerators. Pipes installed outside should be insulated with at least 15 mm thick insulation which is not sensitive to water, such as Armaflex or similar. Insure that the insulation is sealed tightly everywhere and that joints are thoroughly taped. 10 mm insulation is sufficient indoors. The heat pipe water normally does not need frost protection, but the shut off and drain valves should be installed to enable draining of the EcoAir during prolonged shutdowns. Alternatively, the heat pump can be connected to an intermediary circuit with exchanger, pump and frost-protected water. The connection to the heat pump should be made with wire-reinforced hose to prevent noise from the heat pump being transmitted into the house and to accommodate any heat pump movement. Water volumes When connecting to EcoAir, a total water volume in the boiler and accumulator of minimum 20 litres boiler water per kW on the heat pump is recommended. General advice To avoid the risk of damp damage on the wall, the wall grommet should be installed above ground level. If this is not possible, i.e. it has to be installed below ground level, reliable moisture proofing is essential. If the outer wall is provided with damp-insulation sheeting, the hole-making in it should be sealed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure that the hose gets an even and balanced bend, to ensure an sufficient flow. The lower connection on EcoAir is the incoming (cold) water. The upper connection is outgoing (heated) water. The connections on the heat pump are 1” female thread. Venting of the exchanger (condenser) The tube system and the condenser are purged by loosening the fitting on the upper connection on the back. EcoAir with built-in control EcoAir is connected directly to the boiler/tank with a fixed temperature. Connection to CTC EcoEl Electric Boiler The circulating pump is installed on the left connection of the electric boiler and should pump the water out to the heat pump’s lower connection. This ensures that the pump is supplied with water at the start of the system. 24 CTC EcoAir CTC EcoLogic EXT If CTC EcoAir is connected to another existing boiler together with CTC EcoLogic, the installation should follow the instructions and alternatives in the instruction manual of CTC EcoLogic. CTC EcoLogic has 12 different systems built in and can control up to three CTC EcoAir. 5 of these systems are illustrated on the following pages. For more information, refer to the Installation and Manual CTC EcoLogic EXT and Design Manual for heating solutions. Please contact CTC for more information or visit www.ctcvarme.se. CTC EcoAir 25 CTC Ecologic Heating System for CTC EcoAir/EcoPart Mixing valve System (System 1) This connection should be selected if the existing boiler has a mixing valve and the boiler contains a water volume with constantly higher temperature than what is needed for the radiators. System Characteristics: The heat pump is dependant on the flow in the radiator circuit. The radiator pump (M2) pumps for both radiators and the heat pump. The mixing valve smoothly mixes in peak energy when both heat pump and boiler are needed. The water is mixed out into the system via the mixing valve. When needed, CTC EcoLogic EXT starts and stops the boiler. The existing boiler can consist of 26 CTC EcoAir • An oil/gas boiler, oil/electric boiler, combination boiler, pellet boiler, oil boiler, or similar. • An accumulator tank with mixing valve and built-in water heater, connected to a wood boiler or other heating source, or with just electric cartridges built into the tank. Mixing valve System with Tank and Sub-mixing valve (System 6) This system should be chosen if the heat pump is to be connected to a tank. System Characteristics: The system should be sized to a good flow in the heat pump circuit for tank charging. Thereafter heating which is even and silent is mixed to one- and two-pipe systems, floor heating in wood and concrete beams. CTC EcoMiniEl or an electric emission heater in the tank is used as peak heat which is started and stopped as needed. Warm water is produced separately. Peak is recommended to be an electric boiler, peak (floating) since the boiler is stopped 3 °C before the heat pump. Two alternatives are 1. Floating condensing: the heat pump(s) is(are) controlled according to the heat curve only. Kommunikation 2. Fixed condensing: the heat pump(s) is(are) controlled to maximum return temperature. a) CTC EcoAir 27 Mixed valve system with Tank (System 10) This system should be chosen if the heat pump is to be connected to a tank and an existing boiler and the system needs to be flow insensitive. If the existing boiler is used for peak heat only, it should be controlled from CTC EcoLogic EXT. In peak mode the relay outlet for peak heat is always alive and the boiler controls its own temperature. If the boiler has to always be warm in order to produce hot water, it should not be controlled from CTC EcoLogic EXT. The existing boiler can consist of • An oil/gas boiler, oil/electric boiler, combination boiler, electric boiler, or similar. • An accumulator tank with built-in water heater, connected to a wood boiler or other heating source. The bivalent mixing valve used in system 10 is not included in the delivery design of CTC EcoLogic EXT and must be ordered separately. Two alternatives: 1. Floating condensing: the heat pump(s) is(are) controlled according to the heat curve only. 2. Fixed condensing: the heat pump(s) is(are) controlled to maximum return temperature. The peak boiler’s boiler thermostat can be set to higher temperatures than what is needed as maximum supply line temperature for the radiator (at DUT). When the peak boiler is allowed to start, the boiler is mixed in smoothly to achieve the supply line temperature (B1). For sizing of the bivalent mixing valve, please see the ”System Manual”. 28 CTC EcoAir Mixing valve system with Warm Water Charging and Sub-mixing valve (System 11) This system should be chosen if the heat pump is to be connected to an existing boiler, a water heater is to be charged and a sub-mixing valve is to be controlled. The water heater must be sized to the heat pump effect. After-heating of the hot water is always recommended. When the compressor is blocked in the heat pump, no water is produced. The peak boiler’s boiler thermostat can be set to higher temperatures than what is needed as maximum supply line temperature for the radiator (at DUT). When the peak boiler is allowed to start, the boiler is mixed in smoothly to achieve the supply line temperature (B1). In peak mode the relay outlet for peak heat is always alive and the boiler controls its own temperature. If the boiler has to always be warm in order to postheat hot water, it should not be controlled from CTC EcoLogic EXT. The existing boiler can consist of • An oil/gas boiler, oil/electric boiler, combination boiler, electric boiler, or similar. • An accumulator tank with built-in water heater, connected to a wood boiler or other heating source. Y11 Y15 CTC EcoAir 29 Mixing valve system with Tank, Sub-mixing valve and Warm Water Charging (System 12) This system should be chosen if the heat pump is to be connected to a tank, the radiator water is mixed out to two systems and a water heater charged. CTC EcoMiniEl or a boiler is used as peak heat which is started and stopped as needed. Peak heat is recommended to be an electric boiler, peak (floating) since the boiler is stopped 3 °C before the heat pump. 30 CTC EcoAir Condensation water tray Installation of drain pipe The outer diameter of the condensation tray outlet is ø50 mm and is adapted to be connected to PEM pipes and connections. The drain shall be routed with required drop to a caisson, surface water gully, down pipe or other drainage. Remember that the drain hose may need an external heating cable. CTC EcoAir 31 Electrical installation Installation and switching in the heat pump shall be carried out by an authorized electrician. All wiring shall be carried out according to current regulations. The boiler is already wired internally at the factory. Supply CTC EcoAir shall be connected to 400 V 3N~ and protective earth. For array fuse size, see technical data. (°C) CTC EcoAir 125 Outdoor temp. (°C) Most often heat carrier pumps have a switch for speed, and the setting depends on the pressure drop in the system. A recommended temperature difference across the heat pump on the warm side is between 5-10ºC at +7°C, outdoors. The simplest way of adjusting is with the help of the temperatures measured in the supply line minus return temperature; this temperature difference (ΔT) is adjusted with the help of the circulating pump and the control valve. The adjustment is carried out at stable operation approx. 5 min after start, or approx. 5 min after defrosting at cold outdoor temperature. The minimum recommended flow indicated in Pipe Installations gives a difference of approximately 10 ºC at operational event +7/35ºC.
