Unpack and identify all components (Fig. 4). Fig. 4 Page 4 #1844 Diagnostic Keypad REMOVE SHIPPING RESTRAINTS 1. Remove and save the dome cover screws. (Fig. 5). 2. Carefully remove the dome cover. Do not allow dome cover to catch on internal components or wiring. DO NOT SET THE DOME COVER UPSIDE DOWN. 3. Remove and discard the shipping bolt. Fig. 5 IMPORTANT! The shipping bolt must be removed prior to installation. IMPORTANT! CAREFULLY remove the dome cover. Do not allow dome cover to catch on internal components or wiring. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! NEVER lift the unit by the LNB assembly, Wave Guide assembly, or the dish. Lift the unit by the base ONLY. Page 5 DOME LOCATION 1. Select an area on the vessel for the dome unit, keeping in mind that most times the wiring will enter the vessel through the surface directly beneath the dome unit (see Fig. 7 for typical installations). Use the following criteria: a) The shortest distance between the dome unit and the main satellite receiver is most desirable. b) The dome unit requires a 16.5“ diameter mounting area on the vessel surface. You may also use an industry standard mount. (Call King Controls or visit www.kingcontrols.com for more information.) Exact hole spacing is shown at right. Distances are to centers of holes. c) The dome unit should never be mounted so that it is tilted more than two degrees in any direction. d) Keep the dome unit as far away from the radar as possible, and if possible above the level of the radar. e) The dome unit should be mounted as close as possible to the center of the vessel (fore-aft and side to side). f) The mounting surface must be strong enough not to flex under the weight of the unit or from vessel vibrations. g) There must be no “line of sight” obstructions from this location. Items such as masts or radar antennas that are too close to the dome unit may prevent the satellite signal from reaching the dish (Fig. 6). Fig. 6 Page 6 Fig. 7 1200-KU TYPICAL INSTALLATIONS COAX REQUIREMENTS IMPORTANT! USE ONLY THE COAX CABLE SUPPLIED WITH THE SEA-KING. COIL AND STORE EXCESS CABLE IN THE CABINET WITH THE COMPONENTS. DO NOT CUT COAX. If coax cable other than that supplied with the Sea-King is used, the following guidelines must be followed: ® 1) Ends must be terminated with SNAP-N-SEAL connectors (Fig. 8). DO NOT USE TWIST-ON OR HEX-CRIMPED CONNECTORS. 2) Cable must be RG6 and rated at 2.2 GHz or higher. Fig. 8 Page 7 PRE-INSTALLATION HOOKUP FOR INITIAL SEARCH To verify proper operation of the components, temporarily connect the unit and perform an initial search as follows: 1. Place the dome unit in its mounting location and temporarily secure the unit from falling. Fig. 9 Depending on the location, you may have to use the supplied right angle F-connectors to avoid bending the coax too sharply during the temporary hookup described below (Fig. 9). IMPORTANT! IF CONFIGURING THE RECEIVER FOR MULTIPLE SATELLITE SWITCHING WITH DISH NETWORK OR EXPRESSVU, Y0U MUST DO THE PRE-INSTALLATION CHECK ON A MOTIONLESS PLATFORM SUCH AS THE DOCK OR GROUND. 2. Choose your desired wiring configuration: Dish Network / ExpressVu / DIRECTV (single satellite or auto switching from master receiver only) Fig. 10, Page 9 DIRECTV (auto switching from any receiver) Fig. 11, Page 10 Note: For the temporary hookup and initial testing, plug in the Diagnostic Keypad, not the wall mount controller. 3. Page 10 This page intentionally left blank. Page 11 SATELLITE CONFIGURATION Satellite re-configuration requires a King Controls Diagnostic Keypad #1844 not supplied with the antenna. If you do not have a keypad, contact your local authorized King-Dome dealer or call King Controls at (800) 982-9920. The Sea-King is factory pre-set for DIRECTV standard digital programming broadcast from the 101° W satellite. If you also receive your local channels from DIRECTV’s 119 satellite or if you subscribe to Dish Network or ExpressVu programming, you must use the Diagnostic Keypad to re-configure the antenna to work with your satellite service. Doing this will allow the Sea-King to lock on the correct satellites to receive your programming and also enable automatic satellite switching via the receiver’s remote control for multi-satellite service. Antenna configuration is a one time procedure that MUST BE COMPLETED before using your Sea-King antenna. Choose your desired option on pages 14-15 and then follow the instructions below. DIRECTV SINGLE SATELLITE 101: The system is factory pre-set for basic DIRECTV service broadcast from the 101° W satellite. If you have this service, make sure your receiver is set for round dish-1 satellite (do this through the receiver’s satellite set-up menu screens). and then go to page 18. YOU MUST SET YOUR ELEVATION ZONE (PAGE 18) EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CHANGING YOUR SWITCHING MODE OR PROVIDER CODE. FOR ALL OTHER SERVICES: You will need to change the Satellite Switching Mode and Satellite Provider Code. Determine your SWITCHING MODE and PROVIDER CODE from the chart on page 13 and then follow the instructions on pages 16-17. Page 21 When configuration and search are successfully completed, disconnect the unit as follows: a) Turn power off at the keypad. b) Turn power off at the receiver. c) Disconnect power. d) Disconnect coax. DOME INSTALLATION AND EXTERNAL WIRING Fig. 13 1. Apply foam gasket to bottom of dome unit (Fig. 13). Note: The Sea-King is wired for multiple receiver support. There are two coax ports on the bottom of the dome unit. The one labeled “MAIN” must be connected to the main receiver in the vessel. The unlabeled port can be used for an additional receiver. If using two coax, label the ends of one to avoid confusion when making the internal hookups. The installer is responsible for sealing all openings where wiring enters the vessel so they are entirely waterproof (inside and outside of the holes). IMPORTANT! You must fill the ends of all external coax (including right angle connectors if being used) with the supplied dielectric grease. Failure to do so will void warranty. 2. Connect the 50’ coax cable (that will go to the MAIN receiver) to the coax port labeled MAIN on the bottom of the dome unit and tighten connection. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE REMOVED RIGHT ANGLE COAX CONNECTOR UNLESS YOU ARE RUNNING COAX OUT TO THE SIDE. (Fig. 14). If using a second receiver, connect a second coax cable (see coax requirements, page 7) to the unlabeled port and tighten connection. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN CONNECTIONS (Fig. 14). Page 22 Fig. 14 IMPORTANT! Use right angle F-connector ONLY IF ROUTING COAX TO THE SIDE with a direct to deck installation method. Fill ends of F-connectors with grease. IMPORTANT! You must fill the ends of ALL external coax with the supplied dielectric grease. Failure to do so will void warranty. Coax connections should be snug. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN! 3. Plug external wiring harness into matching connector from dome unit. You must tighten the connection until you feel a click. 4. Route wiring as necessary and place the dome unit in its mounting location. 5. Use the four mounting holes inside the base to install the dome unit to the mounting pedestal or the vessel surface (fasteners go from inside of base to outside). 6. Secure wiring every 12-18 inches and seal all openings where the wiring enters the vessel so they are entirely waterproof (inside and outside of the holes). IMPORTANT! When re-installing the dome cover, CAREFULLY lower it onto the base. Do not allow it to catch on internal components or wiring. The dome cover screws have a pre-applied locking compound on them. DO NOT APPLY ANY ADDITIONAL LOCKING COMPOUND TO THE SCREWS. APPLYING ADDITIONAL COMPOUND WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND MAY CAUSE CRACKING IN THE DOME COVER. 7. Replace dome cover on base and align holes in dome cover with holes in base. Attach dome cover with dome cover screws saved earlier. Tighten ALL screws securely. Page 23 INTERNAL WIRING 1. Refer back to your desired wiring configuration and make all permanent connections as shown, keeping in mind the following important points: a) For the permanent installation, use the Wall Mount Controller, not the keypad. b) The connection between the dome unit and the receiver must be a direct connection with no devices in between. Any other devices should be downstream from the receiver. Do not go through an “A-B” or any other switch, box, or booster. c) Power connection must be a non-shared circuit. Excessive current draw on the circuit will cause the unit to operate improperly. Power and ground connections must be made after the wires are connected to the dome unit. Use a 7.5 amp fuse in fused non-shared circuits. FINAL TEST (Follow the Instructions in Section 4, Operation) 1. Perform a search to verify unit is operating correctly. You must be able to view the program guide or a channel. Page 24 This page intentionally left blank. Page 25 SECTION 4 OPERATION IMPORTANT: There must be a clear “line of sight” to the southern sky. Masts, antennas, trees, buildings, mountains, etc. can all block the satellite signal from reaching the dish. The distance traveled since last performing a search may affect how long it takes for the Sea-King to find the satellite. This Sea-King will not receive channels broadcast from DIRECTV’s Ka band satellites at 99° and 103°. Satellite TV and receiver technology are constantly changing. If you experience difficulty go to www.kingcontrols.com or contact the King Controls Service Department at (800) 982-9920, ext. 373. 1. Turn on TV and Receiver. “Searching for Satellite” or similar will appear on TV screen. 2. On Sea-King controller, MOMENTARILY press ON. 3. Press TRACK. STATUS LIGHT SYSTEM STATUS alternating colors Initializing GREEN-flashing Potential satellite found GREEN-steady Target satellite found (tracking) 4. When the status light is steady green, select a channel or the program guide to view your programming. Enjoy! (DO NOT TURN THE SEA-KING OFF.) Note: If the status light is steady GREEN and your programming does not appear, press the reset button on your DIRECTV receiver. If using Dish Network, hold the receiver power button in for 10 seconds to reset your receiver. Consult your receiver owner’s manual for further details. (Note that it may take several minutes for the guide to re-download.) When receiver reset is complete and the guide is downloaded, select a channel or the program guide to view your programming. ALTERNATE SEARCH METHOD If you experience difficulty locking onto the satellite, press and hold ON for 3 FULL SECONDS. Page 26 AUTOMATIC SATELLITE SWITCHING 1. Simply choose your desired channel using the receiver’s remote control. The Sea-King will automatically switch to the appropriate satellite. Note: For better performance when using the automatic satellite switching feature, change channels by selecting your program from the channel guide rather than channel surfing. It is common for the picture to pixel or display an error message when the antenna is switching between satellites, the vessel is pitching or rolling excessively, or the signal has been temporarily blocked. PLEASE BE PATIENT. THE PICTURE WILL RETURN. If an error message appears for an extended period, selecting CANCEL may help clear the message more quickly. Page 27 SECTION 5 SYMPTOM Unit does not find satellite. (STATUS light flashes red or green.) STATUS light flashes orange. TROUBLESHOOTING POSSIBLE REASON COURSE OF ACTION Did not initiate search method correctly. Press ON. Press TRACK. (See OPERATIONS, page 26.) Did not initiate alternate search method correctly. Status light will flash red 4 times. The new zone is programmed in, and the system will start up and automatically find the satellite. Page 29 SECTION 6 MAINTENANCE The Sea-King Satellite System has been designed to be maintenance and trouble free. For optimum signal strength, keep the dome clean from dirt, bugs, and other debris. Periodic washing of the dome with mild soap and water is recommended. If you plan on storing your vessel for long periods of time, it is recommended that the system be put through a search procedure on a quarterly basis to keep all moving parts in good working order. If you have any comments or questions, please contact the King Controls Service Department at (800) 982-9920, ext. 373, or email King Controls at [email protected] Rain Fade Rain or dew on the dome can cause signal interference and make the digital picture freeze, pixel or go out altogether. This loss of signal is commonly referred to as “rain fade” and is caused by the combination of water in the atmosphere and water on the dome surface. To minimize this issue and eliminate the effects of water on the dome, apply King Controls Dome Magic rain fade solution to the dome. This will prevent water from sticking to the dome surface and blocking the signal. For additional details on Dome Magic rain fade solution please contact your authorized Sea-King dealer or call King Controls at (800) 982-9920. ® ® Single Application Packet #1830-SP Page 30 Spray Can #1830 SECTION 7 LIMITED WARRANTY Every Sea-King Satellite System is thoroughly inspected and tested before leaving the factory.
