EN-101W-X -Y Installation Manual EN-101W-X-Y 5" Woofer Speaker Enclosure 1.0 General Information 1.1 Introduction This manual contains information for the proper installation and operation of Audio International’s (AI) 5" Woofer Speaker Enclosure, Model # EN-101W-X-Y. Also included are mechanical and electrical characteristics of the unit. 1.2 Purpose of the Equipment 1.2.1 Audio International’s EN-101W-X-Y is a high quality compact and ultra-light speaker enclosure featuring a state-of-the-art 5" speaker intended for use with aircraft entertainment audio systems. The unit has a total depth of less than 3" and weighs less than four (4) pounds. 1.2.2 The magnetically shielded isodynamic enclosure consists of a 5" damped polymer composite cone utilizing a hexatech aluminum voice coil. A unique design allows the EN-101W-X-Y to incorporate an extremely large diameter aluminum voice coil to guarantee highprecision sound production. 1.2.3 The “-X” in the suffix indicates the 5" Woofer Speaker Enclosure’s impedance, and will be either a 4 or an 8. The “-Y” suffix designates the type of connector utilized; “-1” = 12” Wire Bundle w/ AMP Universal Mate-N-Lok Connector and “-2” = 12” Wire Bundle w/ ITT Cannon MIL-C-26482 Connector. These modules provide convenient solutions for a variety of frequently encountered interfacing needs or special requirements and are an important part of AI’s “building block” system for configuring total cabin management. Typical interfaces include various types of audio power amplification equipment. This unit is capable of interfacing and accepting input from all Audio International and standard COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) audio power amplification equipment provided this equipment does not supply each EN-101W-X-Y unit with greater than the maximum rated powerhandling capability of the integrally mounted speaker driver element (150 WRMS per driver). Contact your AI representative for details. 2.0 Application 2.1 Introduction Given its compact size and performance requirements, the EN-101W-X-Y is designed to interface to an audio power amplifier incorporating either an active electronic crossover or an enhanced sound processing circuit. To achieve performance down to 100 Hz, the EN-101W-X-Y is intended to interface to Audio International amplifiers incorporating an electronic crossover for driving woofer/subwoofer speaker enclosure assemblies. This crossover frequency is typically at 135 Hz. To achieve performance down to 60 Hz, the EN-101W-X-Y is intended to interface only to Audio International amplifiers incorporating an Enhanced Sound Processing circuit. This enhanced sound processing network, implemented using a Linkwitz Transform Bi-Quad circuit, is specifically tuned to match the characteristics of the EN-101W-X-Y to achieve maximum performance of this speaker enclosure. The unit is mounted as a single unit and is supplied with a pigtail (approximately 12") for connections. Prior to installation the following items should be considered: 3.1.1 During the design and layout of the aircraft cabin, careful consideration of the location of this and all other audio/video modules is necessary. Some of the items to consider include: • • • • • • • Space Proximity to other devices (i.e. source equipment) Available power supply Length of cable runs Environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) Location of other aircraft systems (i.e. oxygen delivery) Access for service repair (if applicable) 3.1.3 The EN-101W-X-Y shall be installed to conform to the standards designated by the customer, installing agency, and existing conditions as to the unit location and type of installation. 3.2 Unpacking and Inspection 3.2.1 Carefully open the packaging and remove the EN-101W-X-Y. Verify that all components have been included in the package per the packing list. Inspect the unit for shipping damage. Document # 540284 Rev IR, 02/2004 Page 5 of 12 Audio International, Inc. EN-101W-X -Y Installation Manual 3.2.2 If damage has occurred during shipping, a claim should be filed with Audio International WITHIN 24 hours and a Return Request Authorization Number shall be obtained from AI. Refer to the front cover of this manual for address and telephone number of Audio International, Inc. Repackage the unit in its original packaging materials and return it to AI following instructions given by the AI representative. If no return is necessary, retain the packing list and the packing materials for storage. 3.3 Cautions and Warnings 3.3.1 It is important to do a pin-to-pin power and ground check on all connectors. Ensure that power and ground are applied only where specified. Damage to the unit may result if power or ground is applied to the wrong points. 3.3.2 DO NOT remove any factory-installed screws. Damage to the unit may result and void any warranties. 3.3.3 DO NOT install near heat sources such as direct sunlight, warm air exhausts, or heaters. The EN-101W-X-Y shall be located away from heat sources, magnetic fields, direct sunlight, and areas with excessive dust. 3.3.4 DO NOT mount the unit to the skin of the aircraft. 3.3.5 NO periodic scheduled maintenance or calibration is required for continued airworthiness of the EN-101W-X-Y. If the unit fails to perform to specifications, it must be removed and serviced by a qualified service facility. 3.3.6 DO NOT restrict airflow in front of the enclosure. Airflow should be a minimum of 70% unrestricted. Heavy fabrics and solid objects can restrict airflow and damage speaker. 3.3.7 DO NOT remove the speaker from the enclosure; the speaker is sealed in place to provide optimum performance. 3.3.8 ESD (Electro Static Discharge) guidelines shall be followed. With the aircraft power “ON”, test the speaker’s performance with any properly connected audio unit. 4.0 Troubleshooting 4.1 Introduction Most functional problems will be detected during the post installation test; refer to EN-101W-X-Y, Post-Installation Test (Section 3.9). Once the unit has passed these tests, it can be functional for many years of service. Most problems with sound quality are not due to speaker performance, but instead are caused by source equipment or faulty audio material. It is always recommended to check all source equipment and audio material as well as the speaker in question. 4.2 General Troubleshooting Procedures Many problems can be isolated with the following general techniques: • To verify power to the amplification unit, recheck +28 VDC power is applied to the proper pins. Use a voltmeter to verify correct level. • Reset by removing power from the amplification unit for at least one (1) minute and reapply power. • Recheck all connections to the speaker from the amplification unit for security. Check all harness runs for possible pinching. Recheck all pinouts for application accuracy. • If applicable, ensure that clean and undamaged audio material is being used. Dirty or damaged CDs and DVDs may damage source equipment.
