INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 1 Installing Cobra 4.7 in Windows 7 The following document shows you how to install Deltek Cobra 4.7 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system and then configure it to use an SQL Express database. There are four main steps to completing this operation. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Install Cobra 4.7 Create an SQL Database Create an ODBC Data Source Configure Cobra to use the SQL Database
Assumptions: A Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 or 2008 installation exists on the target machine or a standard SQL Database is available on a remote server.
1.1 Cobra 4.7 Installation Instructions Follow these steps to install the client software on your Windows 7 machine. 1. Run the Setup.exe file from your Cobra 4.7 installation media. 2. At the welcome dialog, click Next >.
3. In the License Agreement dialog, click Yes.

4. Enter your User Information, Serial Number and Password.

6. Select Complete in the Setup Type dialog.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 7. Go with the default settings in the Select Cobra Paths dialog. Note: Cobra uses these paths to install and manage a number of important configuration and program files concerned with database connectivity.
8. Select the Program Folder for Cobra’s startup shortcut/menu item. We recommend going with the default for this dialog.

10. Cobra will install on the machine with the default FoxPro standalone database.

12. Launch the program to test the installation.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 1.2 Configuring Cobra 4.7 to Use an SQL Server Database Next you need to create an SQL Database to house the Cobra database table schema. 1. Run SQL Management Studio. 2. Right-click on Database and select New Database…
3. Enter the name for your default COBRA47 database in the Database Name field.
4. Click OK to create the database and then close the SQL Management Studio.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 1.3 Create an ODBC Data Source Next you will need to configure an ODBC Data Source on your system. Follow these steps on your Windows 7 machine to create the Data Source. 1. Open the Control Panel from your Start menu. 2. Select System and Security. 3. Select Administrative Tools.
4. Select Data Sources (ODBC).

6. Select SQL Server.
Note: you will need either an SQL Server Express installation on your machine to see this option or an SQL Client installed if you are connecting to an SQL Database on a remote system. 7. Enter the details of your SQL Database in the New Data Source dialog.

8. The completed dialog should appear similar to the following:
If you’re using an instance of SQL such as the default SQL Express instance, you will need to add this to your Server field. The selector only locates the server name and doesn’t offer the instances.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 9. Enter the login details for the SQL Server database. In this example the SQL Server Authentication is being used.
10. Now select the SQL Database you wish to connect to. In this example the COBRA47 database created earlier is being selected.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 1.4 Configure Cobra 4.7 to Connect with the SQL Database The next step is to tell Cobra to use the Cobra 47 data source as its database and have Cobra write all the tables and views required to support this. 1. Run your Cobra 4.7 installation. 2. Click on the System menu and choose Configure | Data… from the submenu.
3. In the Format field, select ODBC.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 4. In the Datasource Name field, select your Cobra47 Data Source as defined earlier.
5. In the DBMS Name field, select SQL Server.
6. At this point you need to create a new Program Directory below the Cobra installation directory and point the Program: file field at that new folder using the ellipse button to the left of the field.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 To do this, click on the ellipse button and use the Make New Folder button to create a new folder in which Cobra will write certain data files that support the new ODBC connection to the SQL Data Source and Database.
7. Slick the Save button to have Cobra populate the new SQLDB folder with files necessary for connecting to the new ODBC data source.

1.5 Building the Cobra 4.7 Data Schema Next we need to have Cobra build out the tables in the SQL Database to support the program. 1. Click on the Advanced button
2. Select all the Generate Tables options.

3. Click OK to start the process. 4. Click Yes to overwrite the existing SQL Database.
5. Click Yes to create the data tables.
6. Click Yes to delete any existing tables.

7. Click Yes to create DBC Views.
8. When done, all the options will become deselected. Click Close.

INSTALLING COBRA 4.7 ON WINDOWS 7 Congratulations: your Cobra 4.7 installation is now ready for data using the SQL Database. You can use the Initialize Demo Data… option to load one of the sample projects to test your installation.
