Instructions UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 1 28/09/2011 15:23 UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 2 28/09/2011 15:23 Our beds can become home to millions of unwanted guests… The most common are dust mites. They thrive in the humid environment beneath our sheets and reproduce rapidly. It’s estimated that we share our beds with around 1.5/2 million dust mites every night. Dust mite waste carries a number of harmful allergens that can cause a number of allergic reactions and can trigger respiratory problems, like asthma. Worse than the dust mite is the bed bug. Though not an everyday problem, bed bug infestations are becoming more and more common. Bed bugs usually hitch-hike into your home on things like luggage, furniture and your pets. They’re attracted to your bed by your breath and the body heat you generate while you’re asleep. Bed bug bites can have a devastating effect on your skin, causing anything from bite marks to serious skin rashes and infection. Thanks to the UV Ultravac from JML, you’ll be able rest easily again. UV light has been used for over a 100 years to sterilise essential hospital equipment. Now you can enjoy the same cleaning power in your own home and zap nasty bugs and mites and clean up their harmful waste with ease. Please make sure you read the information in this instruction manual carefully before use and retain for future reference. UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 2 28/09/2011 15:23 Using Your UV Ultra Vac What is the UV ULTRA VAC? The JML UV Ultra Vac has been designed to help clean and disinfect beds, bedding and soft-upholstery by using a combination of vacuum power, HEPA filter and UV technology. What is UV-C? UV stands for ultraviolet C stands for the particular frequency of UV light that kills germs. UV-C is a short-wave ultraviolet light invisible to the naked eye and ranges between 200 / 280 nanometres. It has been used in hospitals for sterilisation for over a 100 years. UV-C (UVC) is also referred to as UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation). How does it work? UV-C penetrates the outer cell structure and alters the DNA molecule, preventing replication and causing them to die. This process has been proven to be extremely effective against house dust mites and bed bugs, as well as fungus and bacteria such as E-coli and Staphylococcus. What is a HEPA filter? HEPA is an acronym for “high efficiency particulate air”. HEPA is a type of filter that can trap a large amount of very small particles that other vacuum cleaners would simply re-circulate back into the air of your home. HEPA filters are composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibres and are critical in the prevention of the spread of allergies, airborne bacterial and viral organisms. The HEPA filter supplied with the UV Ultra Vac is a True HEPA H11 filter and is effective at trapping 99.97% of allergen particles. 3 UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 3 28/09/2011 15:23 Using Your UV Ultra Vac 1. For newer mattresses, pillows and soft furnishings, it is recommended that you clean at least once a week. For older mattresses, pillows and soft furnishings, it is recommended that you clean at least 2 to 3 times per week. Getting started The UV Ultra Vac can be used with the bedding in place but it is recommended that you remove any bedding when cleaning your mattress, this will aid in the removal of any house dust mites, bed bugs and their waste. The integrated vacuum grill has been designed to prevent bed sheets and other materials from blocking the vacuum aperture on the base of the Ultra Vac; this will allow easy cleaning with your bed sheets in place if required. Place the Ultra Vac onto your chosen surface, ensuring all 3 micro safety wheels are in contact with the surface. Turn on the Ultra Vac using the On/Off switch - this is located on the top left side of the Ultra Vac. There are 2 UV indicator lights located on each side of the Ultra Vac head; these will glow blue when the unit is on and all 3 micro safety wheels are pressed down correctly. The 3 micro wheels are a safety feature of the Ultra Vac and are used to ensure the UV bulb is not activated by the user by accident. Never touch or look directly at the UV light when it is activated. 6 UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 6 28/09/2011 15:23 Using Your UV Ultra Vac Cleaning your mattress Keep the Ultra Vac flat on the surface of the mattress and begin to move it smoothly and steadily across your mattress (please see example diagrams below). Avoid leaving the UV Ultra Vac in one area for more than 5 SECONDS as this may lead to discolouration of your mattress due to the high intensity of the UV bulb. Moving the Ultra Vac slowly will ensure more dust mites, bed bugs, their waste and bacteria is exposed to the UV-C rays and collected by the vacuum. If using on a king-size mattress the telescopic handle will make it easier for you to reach the full length of the mattress. Cleaning other items Use the same method for bed sheets and duvets. For smaller items, a back and forth motion is recommended. The vacuum can be used on a variety of items around the home. Such as carpets, rugs, matts, dog baskets and blankets. OR 7 UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 7 28/09/2011 15:23 Using Your UV Ultra Vac Dust box and filter Before you remove the dust box or filter, please ensure you switch off the appliance and unplug the power cable. To release, press the button located on the top of the dust box then lift the dust box out. To remove the filter, ensure the dust box is facing downwards, (this will stop the contents falling out). Grip the filter with 2 fingers and pull. It is recommended that you empty the contents into an outside bin or sealed bin then brush the filter with the tool supplied to clear any debris. (The filter can be hand washed in water. Leave to dry completely before replacing back into the dust box.) DO NOT MACHINE WASH To reassemble, place the clean, dry filter back into the dust box, then push the dust box back into the unit until it clicks. Hose attachment / crevice tool The unit is supplied with a hose attachment; this can be used for cleaning hard to reach places. The hose pushes into the suction hole located on the base of the appliance. First remove the grill, (this will pull out) and proceed to push the hose into the hole. Please note that the UV-C bulb will not be active with the hose attachment in place due to the safety wheels not being depressed - this is a safety feature. If for any reason it should activate, immediately turn off the unit and contact JML customer service on 0800 781 7831. There is also a space saving hook located between the rear wheels. This can be used for easy storage. 8 UV UltraVac_IM_B.indd 8 28/09/2011 15:23 Maintenance It is recommended that you clean the HEPA filter regularly. The filter can be washed in water. To remove the HEPA filter, first ensure the appliance has been switched off and is unplugged from the mains supply. Remove the dust box and pull out the filter. You will see a clip on one side of the filter: press the clip and pull. The filter will now come away from the housing. After washing, ensure the filter is completely dry before replacing. Side filter The appliance also has a side filter. It is recommended that you clean the filter every 12 – 18 months; this will help to maintain optimum performance.
