IntelliKeys USB Keyboard: Tutorial- Part 1 IntelliKeys USB Keyboard is a flat, programmable keyboard that plugs into your computer. This keyboard is used to assist individuals who have difficulty with access. It comes with six keyboard overlays that provide alternatives to the standard keyboard. These assist with entering letters and numbers, navigating on-screen displays, and executing commands. IntelliKeys can also be used as an alternative for mouse functions or as a switch.
IntelliKeys USB Keyboard Features The IntelliKeys USB keyboard has a flat, grid surface where the overlays are placed. There are indicator lights on the left side of the keyboard. There are two switch ports on the left side of the keyboard and a USB cable port on the back of the keyboard. The IntelliKeys USB keyboard has slant bar on the back on the keyboard. FRONT VIEW

IntelliKeys Overlays The IntelliKeys overlays consist of 6 different keyboard designs and 1 setup overlay. These are the standard overlays and they have large, spaced keys with high contrast colors. The overlays are printed on the front and back of 4 separate cards. Each overlay is labeled on the left-hand side, and is encoded with a bar code that is recognized by IntelliKeys when inserted into the keyboard overlay area. IntelliKeys will recognize the bar code and adjust to the overlay. The overlays can be used to enter letters, numbers, perform navigation and mouse functions, and to perform switch functions. Custom designed overlays, created with specialized software, can also be used to address specific needs. IntelliKeys USP Keyboard comes with the following keyboard overlays: • Alphabet USB Overlay • Math Access USB Overlay • Mouse Access Overlay • Basic Writing USB Overlay • Qwerty USB Overlay • Web Access USB Overlay • Setup USB Overlay NOTE: Keyboard overlays used in the IntelliKeys Classic Keyboard (NonUSB version) are NOT compatible with the IntelliKeys USB Keyboard.

4. Basic Writing USB Overlay This overlay is a simplified version of a standard computer keyboard. Like a standard keyboard, the top row of letters begins with Q-W-E-R-T-Y. This overlay also contains numbers, punctuation, and basic mouse functions. This keyboard can be used with students who are first learning to operate word processing programs.
5. QWERTY USB Overlay This overlay has the same QWERTY letter arrangement found on standard Macintosh and Windows computer. It also contains other function keys found on typical computer keyboards.
6. Web Access USB Overlay This overlay replicates features found on a typical Internet browser program, such as Back, Forward, Stop, Refresh, Home, etc. Convenient short-cut keys automatically type common Web prefixes and suffixes such as www, .com, .org, and .net.

7. Setup USB Overlay This overlay is used to adjust the features of the IntelliKeys USB keyboard. It is used to customize settings including the keyboard response or repeat rate to assist with more accurate access. The setup overlay provides: • touch features related to touching keys on the keyboard; • repeat features that are related to how the keyboard repeats keystrokes; • shift features, related to latching of keys; • additional features, which enable use of IntelliKeys for mouse functions and use of customized overlays; • troubleshooting, including resetting the keyboard • and a number pad and test pad to assist with configuring settings. On the reverse side of the Setup USB Overlay, there is an Access Features Chart. It is a helpful quick-reference guide to the IntelliKeys USB features, options and settings. NOTE: The Access Features Chart is not an overlay; therefore it will not enable keyboard functions if inserted in the keyboard overlay area.

1. Shift Key Action - Latching IntelliKeys USB enables individuals to type multiple keystroke combinations in sequence. This feature, called Latching, assists individuals who use one finger to type. The shift key changes the way a modifier key (shift key, command key and the option key) is accessed. When it is pressed, the key is latched until another key is pressed. If the next key pressed is a letter, it will be capitalized. The default for the shift key action on IntelliKeys USB is set on latching. 1. To capitalize a letter, press the Shift key. Press the letter “A.” 2. Press the letter “A” again. It will be a lower case “a”.
2. Shift Key Action - Locking The Locking key is found under the Shift Key Action section in the lower left corner of the Setup USB Overlay. The Shift Key can be set to Locking, instead of Latching. When set to Locking, the first time it is pressed, the shift key is in a latched state. The second time the shift key is pressed, it becomes locked down. This enables the user to type several shifted characters in a row. The third time you press the shift key, the lock is turned off. 1. Insert the Setup USB Overlay. Press the Locking key at the Shift Key Action (located in the lower left corner of the Setup USB Overlay). 2. Remove the Setup Overlay. Insert the Basic Writing USB Overlay. 3. Press the Shift key twice. Type the letters “USA”. Press the Shift key again to turn off the locking function. 4. Press the letter “A”. You should type a lower case “a”. 5. Remove the Basic Writing USB Overlay and insert the Setup USB Overlay. Under Shift Key Action press the Latching key to return to the default setting.

3. Keyboard Repeat When a key is held down too long or if a key is continually pressed, unwanted keystrokes occur. The IntelliKeys USB Setup Overlay is used to prevent erroneous key repeats. The Repeat Feature can be turned off altogether so that keys will not repeat if held, or the repeat rate can be adjusted to suite individual needs. The range for repeat rate is 1 through 15, with 1 being the slowest and 15 being the fastest repeat rate. 1. Type the k and hold your finger down on the key to have the key repeated. Notice that after about one second the letter k will continue to be typed. 2. Now remove the Basic Writing USB Overlay and Insert the Setup USB Overlay. 3. Press the Repeat OFF key.

4. Response Rate The keyboard Response Rate is the amount of time you must press on a key before IntelliKeys responds. A user may touch extra or unwanted keys while reaching for a specific key causing errors.
The response time of the keyboard can be adjusted to minimize activating unwanted keys. There are 15 Response Rate settings for the IntelliKeys keyboard. The default setting is 15, no delay. When set at 15, the keyboard responds immediately when a key is pressed. Setting the keyboard response at a lower rate requires a longer time for the user to press the key. The numbers in between 1 and 15 correspond to time delays from approximately 0 to 2 seconds. 1. Insert the Setup USB Overlay in IntelliKeys. IntelliKeys will beep to show that the overlay is ready to use.
