5200 Hampton Boulevard Norfolk, VA 23508 Internship Program Purpose: Allow qualified and interested individuals an opportunity to gain practical experience in a career setting. These experiences can allow them to combine their educational pursuits with day-to-day operations of the telecommunications industry. While some internships can be used for college credit, it is not mandatory. Individual applying for an internship must remember that the sponsoring company spends time and effort in training the interns. The internship is a reciprocal agreement. The intern exchange their time and effort for the opportunity of on-the-job-training and work experience. How To Apply: Individuals may apply in the same way they would apply for a job. An internship application, resume and cover letter are required. The applicant will then be interviewed by the appropriate department supervisor to determine eligibility for the internship. For further information on internships, contact Sherby Wilks at 757.889.9290. Prerequisites 1. An intern should be enrolled in a college or similar curriculum to which the internship applies. (Other applicants will be considered on an individual basis.) 2. If for credit, the applicant must provide the appropriate paperwork from their academic supervisor. 3. Individuals considered for internships will be interviewed by the appropriate WHRO personnel to assess their qualifications. 4. Interns will not receive any type of compensation for participation in the program. 5. All internships will be for a minimum of fifteen (15) weeks of fifteen (15) hours a week unless otherwise agreed upon. 6. All interns will have a two week probationary period. 7. All interns will be evaluated for performance and attendance on a regular basis. 8. WHRO reserves the right to cancel an internship for poor performance and/or attendance. Other Opportunities All interns may have the opportunity to be exposed to other facets of the telecommunications industry by interviews or observations of departments other than that of their internship. These will be dependent on the individual department head’s approval. Benefits to the Student Gain a realistic perspective of the working world. Obtain marketable work experience – students can gain experience in the type of positions they will pursue after college. Make valuable business contacts – contacts made on the job can often assist students in finding permanent employment after graduation. Television Production The intern will be exposed to and involved in: • Camera operations (studio and remote) • DEKO Operations • Production control room operations (switcher, still storer, etc.) • Studio set-up and lighting • Basic editing (Final Cut PRO HD) • Teleprompter • Aiding director in productions Applicant must have: 1. Some television production classes or a basic knowledge of the production process. 2. Preferably a junior or senior in college. Supervisor: Broadcast & Digital Media Officer or designee Engineering (Operations) The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • Videotape operations • Audio • Video • Basic editing (Final Cut PRO HD) • Master Control automations • Tape duplication • Basic maintenance orientation Applicant must have: 1. Basic electronic knowledge 2. Preferably a junior or senior in college Supervisor: Engineering and Information Technology Officer or designee Engineering (Maintenance) The intern will assist in the maintenance of the following: • Videotape machines • Audio equipment • Router • Video and audio switchers and consoles • Certain computer systems and components • UHF television transmitter systems Applicant must have: 1. Intermediate to advance electronic knowledge background 2. Junior or senior in college electronics or electrical engineering Supervisor: Engineering and Information Technology Officer or designee Programming The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • Content research • Liaison with production and engineering • Preparing teleprompter scripts • Coordinating guest schedules • Participating actively in discussions about program topics, content, guests • Handling of viewer inquiries • Clerical work; answer correspondence, fill tape orders • Help maintain content and research files • Screening of video and film clips for insertion in programs Applicants should have: 1. Interest in news/public affairs 2. Interest in cultural activities 3. Knowledge of computers/word processing helpful 4. Initiative and responsibility 5. Preferably a junior or senior in college Supervisor: Broadcast & Digital Media Officer or designee Radio The intern will be exposed to and involved with: - Assisting on-air music producers with show preparation/research - Assisting on-air producers with scheduling guests (interviews). - Assists with listener inquiries (phone calls/email) - Assists in maintaining the music libraries. - Assists on-air producers with maintaining current web content and member guide materials. - Assists with promo uploading, program dubbing and promo creation. - Assists with on-air radio fundraising. - Attends pledge planning meetings - Assists pledge producer - Studio coordination (Jazz/Triple A music) - Premium coordination (Jazz/Triple A/ Folk music) - answering pledge phones Applicants should have: - Interest in classical, jazz and other types of music - Knowledge of computers/word processing - Able to work without constant supervision Supervisor: Director, Radio Programming or designee Radio Public Affairs The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • Opportunity to learn about various aspects of WHRO Public Media while gaining hands-on experience in their chosen area of focus. Internship is primarily focused on providing exposure to radio journalism and radio production for live talk shows. As part of the learning experience, interns work closely with the production staff of our station’s flagship public affairs broadcast, HearSay with Cathy Lewis. • Writing for newscasts • Researching story ideas • Digital audio editing • Interviewing • Booking guests • Field reporting • Call screening for talk shows • Studio operation Applicants should have: 1. Interest in news/public affairs 2. Background or interest in political science, public policy, history, social sciences 3. Knowledge of computers/word processing helpful 4. Able to work without constant supervision 5. Initiative and responsibility Supervisor: Producer, HearSay With Cathy Lewis Defenestration Online Radio Stream The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • The award winning service Defenestration. It isn’t a radio program, or a TV program, or even a podcast. It’s a compilation of videos, audio recordings, paintings, poetry, sculpture, weaving – any creative endeavor that can be shared with visitors to WHRO’s website will find a place on defenestration. Defenestration is an opportunity to share an artist’s creativity with whro.org’s many visitors – and a chance for the public to see and hear the different artistic perspectives of members to the community. It’s a continuous 24/7 variety show. Interns should have a keen interest in local music and arts. • Research and write about local music and art. • Develop your own portfolio of published work while contributing to Defenestration. This is for students who wish to gain the world of music and art journalism, and have their work published. • Interns will perform various functions such as research, fact checking, and basic editing duties. Applicants should have: 1. Be able to keep your finger on the pulse of local music, artists, musical events, festivals, new releases, news, etc. 2. Must be able to meet deadlines and submit on a predetermined schedule that you are comfortable with 3. Reasonable computer skills 4. Must love to write and love music 5. Must have style Supervisor: Network Server Engineer II Marketing The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • Working with the Graphic Designer in assisting in the production, layout and revisions of marketing communications for WHRO. • Maintain a close working relationship with the Graphic Designer and Creative Director to maintain and develop ideas for a wide range of projects. • Assist in proofreading copy and artwork • Work together to create flyers, posters, one-sheets, ads, brochures, banners, postcards, invites, etc. • Assist in the layout of the monthly member magazine including typing TV guide schedules and creating ads. • Creation of corporate templates for invitations for station events. • Maintains files and organizes and stores projects on the server. • Assists in updating older project files with a new modern look following branding guidelines. • Create new corporate PowerPoint templates for station initiatives and departments. • Editing, resizing and color correcting in Photoshop on images. • Assists in taking photographs and accompanying the graphic designer to local press checks. Applicants should have: 1. Be a Junior or senior Graphic Design student 2. Proficiency using MAC OS X system 3. Knowledge in InDesign CC, Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, Word and PowerPoint 4. Must be creative, have good organizational skills and be self-motivated Supervisor: Marketing Officer or designee Online Media (Social Media and Web Content Management) The intern will be exposed to and involved with: • Working with the WHRO Social Media Producer. • Assist the Social Media Producer to implement WHRO’s social media and online content strategies. • Help manage social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and station’s various websites. • Assist in development and implementation of WHRO’s online communications strategies that highlight and promote WHRO’s mission, pro ducts, services, special events and initiatives, using the website and existing social and multimedia tools (photos, video, podcasts, etc.). • Assist in preparing and analyzing web traffic and social media engagement reports utilizing Google Analytics and other web stats reporting tools. • Assist in researching information pertaining to the goals and objectives of WHRO’s online content strategies. • Attend various events, provide content and multimedia coverage and delivery via social media platforms. • Assist in the writing, editing and revision of articles for online publishing. Applicants should have: 5. Preferably be a student majoring in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Business Administration, or related field.
