Updated 12/3/15 Backing up your iPhone iCloud or iTunes, which is right for you? iCloud: iTunes:     Backs up Pictures, Video, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Text messages and Ringtones. Limited storage (5 GB Free, can buy more) Must be connected to Wi-Fi.  Backs up Pictures, Video, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Text messages, Ringtones, Music and Apps. Must have iTunes software installed on your computer. iCloud Backup details can be found at: iTunes Backup details can be found at: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH12519 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204136 Before backing up your iPhone you need to have your AppleID and Password. If you have forgotten your password, please visit the Apple website: https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid To make an iCloud Backup: Recommended: Plug device into power during back up. 1. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network. 2. Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup. 3. Make sure iCloud Backup is turned on. 4. Tap Back Up Now. You must stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until completed. Page 1 of 5 5. Make sure your backup completed by tapping Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage and then select your device. The backup should appear in the details with the time and backup size. To make an iTunes Backup: You must have the iTunes software installed on your computer. If you are not sure if you have iTunes software on your computer or need this installed, contact the ITS HelpDesk at x6400 or email at [email protected]. 1. Connect your device to your computer via white USB cable (same cable used for charging your phone). Open iTunes: If using Windows: Click your Start button. Click All Programs. Scroll down the menu bar and click the iTunes folder Click the iTunes icon to open. If using a Mac: Double-click your Macintosh Hard Drive. Double-click on your Applications folder. Double-click on the iTunes icon to open. Page 2 of 5 2. Device drivers will be installed when you connect your device to your computer (this may take up to a few minutes). Once the drivers have installed you will see a phone icon appear in the top status bar in iTunes. See below. 3. Click the phone icon to bring up your device. (If this is your first time connecting your device, you may be asked to unlock your phone and press “Trust” on your phone screen to allow iTunes access) 4. First save iTunes Store and App Store content by clicking File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. (See image below) You may be asked to authorize your computer if this is the first time on this particular computer, which requires your AppleID and Password. Forgot your AppleID password? Go to: https://iforgot.apple.com/ to reset your password. Forgot your AppleID? Go to: https://iforgot.apple.com/appleid to find. Page 3 of 5 5. Under Backups, select This Computer and select Encrypt iPhone backup. You will be asked to enter a password (write this down as you will need this when you restore to your new phone) Click Back Up Now to begin. See below: At the top of the iTunes window you will see a status bar of your backing up progress. 6. After completion the blue status bar will disappear, you can browse to verify your backup from the top menu, click Edit > click Preferences > See below: Page 4 of 5 7. Click Devices. You should see the name of your device, date and time of the backup. 8. You have completed your backup, you can disconnect your phone from your computer and exit iTunes. Page 5 of 5
