CCD cameras with electronic shutters may be used indoors with a manual iris lens only when the indoor lighting is fairly constant. If outside windows, glass doors, or other factors cause the light level to vary considerably, an auto iris lens must be used.
avelin lenses are designed for format compatibility with CCD type camera sensors. CCD sensors are designed for diagonal equivalency to 2/3", 1/2" or 1/3" of the sensor face plate. Javelin CCTV lenses are designed in 1/3", 1/2", 2/3" and 1" formats for 1:1 ratio compatibility with the different camera formats.
When used in outdoor applications, CCD cameras should generally be equipped with an auto iris, neutral density spot filter lens. The following table provides the lens focal length multiplier for calculating the effective focal length for lens formats that are mismatched with camera sensor formats.
Before selecting a lens, you must know which camera you are going to use and some basic information about the application in which it will be used. You must know, in particular, the type of pickup device used in the camera and its format, the general lighting conditions under which the camera will be operational, the width and height of the area to be viewed, and the distance or probable location of the camera from the field of view.
Example: What is the effective focal length of a 2/3" format, 16mm lens on a 1/2" format camera? Solution: Lens (16mm) x camera (x 1.38) = 22.1mm.

Fixed Focal Length or Zoom Lens Sometimes is is advantageous to place a wide area under surveillance and have the capability of zooming in on incidents for closer observation. However, a zoom lens has no practical advantage unless the camera is mounted such that the zoom axis (line of sight) can be aimed directly at the center of the area to be observed. This often requires that the camera be mounted on a pan/tilt mechanism. To select the correct zoom lens for a given application, it will be necessary to determine two fields of view: one at the wide angle (W) setting of the lens, and one at the telephoto (T) setting.
