Good PERFORMANCE SUMMARY A multifunction printer designed for workgroups that do not need ledger-size output, the Samsung SCX-6555N is ideal for users that require many of the copy, print, scan and fax functions available on traditional copiers, but have limited space. Samsung’s fastest MFP to date, the SCX-6555N MFP offers copy, fax and network print functionality, as well as color and monochrome scanning, in its standard configuration. Equipped with an integrated legal-size flatbed scanner, 50-page ADF and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet interface, the unit completed a 125,000-impression durability test without a single service call and experienced only three misfeeds for a misfeed rate of one per 41,666 impressions. The SCX-6555N MFP features a touch-screen control panel that made use of the copy, scan to e-mail and fax functions very intuitive and procedures for loading paper, adjusting paper drawers and replacing toner and drum cartridge are simple. Although the unit is priced higher than the average for competitive units, its supplies cost per page is the lowest of models in this class tested. Based on its strong performance in BLI’s extensive in-house testing, BLI recommends the Samsung SCX-6555N MFP for mid-size workgroups requiring monochrome printing, copying, faxing and color scanning for monthly print volumes of up to 10,000 impressions. Test duration: Two months, including a 125,000-impression durability test. Manufacturer’s maximum recommended monthly volume: 250,000 impressions. BLI’s recommended monthly volume for optimum performance: Up to 10,000 impressions. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N BUYERS LAB  MULTITASKING Multitasking EXCELLENT EXCELLENT  Offering excellent multitasking capabilities, the Samsung SCX-6555N enables users to program multiple copy jobs (the number is limited only by memory capacity) while the system is copying or printing. In addition, users can send multiple print jobs to the device (limited only by memory capacity). Most devices in this class do not have this capability; instead, with printer-centric devices, one print job is held at the device, while the rest of the jobs are held on the network queue.  Programming of the next job can begin while the pages of the current copy job are being scanned without having to press any additional keys.  A priority level of between 1 and 16 (with one being the highest priority) can be assigned to the print and copy functions, which performed well in the tests.  The Samsung SCX-6555N has an Interrupt function that can be used to interrupt either copy or print jobs in order to allow the immediate copying of an urgent copy job using all machine features (e.g., document feeder, stapling, duplexing and multiple sets). When the Interrupt key is pressed, the interrupted job stops immediately; it resumes automatically upon completion of the interrupting job, after approximately three minutes.  Administrative Utilities ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES VERY GOOD very good  The SCX-6555N supports SyncThru Admin Web Service, a network management utility (available for free download from the Samsung Web site) that allows monitoring and management of multiple devices on the network. It searches for and identifies all networked Samsung and non-Samsung devices, listing them by model, description and status; information for compatible devices is nearly as comprehensive as what is provided for Samsung models. SyncThru Web Admin Service enables administrators to change configuration settings, set up alerts and obtain maintenance information. It provides information regarding status and configuration, as well as a view of the control panel and an indication if any errors or warnings are present. Administrators or users can change network settings, configure e-mail alerts and set printer defaults, such as duplexing, paper type and control panel language.  When accessed by an administrator or a user, SyncThru Web Service provides infor- mation regarding status and configuration, as well as a view of the control panel and an indication if any errors or warnings are present. Administrators or users can change network settings, configure e-mail alerts and set printer defaults, such as duplexing, paper type and control panel language. Administrators can also use the embedded Web page to program scan destinations. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 BUYERS LAB Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N SyncThru Web Admin Service provides a simple user interface that lists monitored devices and indicates problem devices with a warning or error icon, allowing administrators to locate problem devices on the network at a glance. When the administrator double-clicks a device name from the list of monitored devices, he is presented with detailed device information, including alerts, supplies status, protocol information, usage meters and diagnostics information. This consolidated view is preferred to having to access multiple tabs of each unit’s embedded Web page to find information. SyncThru Web Admin Service also provides detailed help information via a searchable index. SyncThru Web Service (the embedded Web page) provides device and consumables status and meter count information. Administrators can also modify print, copy, fax and scan settings and configure LDAP, security and network settings.  SyncThru Web Service indicates the approximate percentage remaining for each consumable item. In addition, the Device Information window provides information on the size of paper in each tray and if the trays are empty, plus total page count. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 BUYERS LAB  Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N Feedback To feedback toWorkstations workstations VERY GOOD very good  The SCX-6555N includes the Smart Panel utility, a program that monitors and informs users of the status of the printer and allows them to customize the printer’s settings. Smart Panel is automatically installed with the printer software. The Smart Panel program displays the current status of the printer and the level of toner remaining in the toner cartridges and allows users to change settings.  If an error occurs while printing, the Smart Panel utility will pop-up automatically; users can also proactively access the utility to obtain information on status. If the user selects the Troubleshooting Guide, an animated graphic “how-to” video will be displayed on the screen. The video will instruct the user how to resolve issues with the device (such as removing paper jams, replacing toner, etc.). Administrators and users can also receive e-mail notification when there is an error or if a consumable needs to be replaced.  Administrators can configure e-mail alerts to be sent to specified users for consumable shortage warnings and when the printer is unable to print.  The SCX-6555N includes SyncThru Admin Web Service, a Web-based printer management solution that allows administrators to manage network printers and remotely monitor and troubleshoot network printers. Administrators can use SyncThru Admin to discover printers on the network and obtain general device and consumables status information. The device list provides an icon indicating the device’s general status (OK, warning or cannot print), a link to the device’s embedded Web page and number of pages printed. Administrators can also access information on installed memory, detailed usage and supply information (including amount of toner remaining and paper tray capacity). For Samsung devices, the Maintenance tab can be used to access software/firmware updates for the selected device.  Ease OF of Network Setup EASE NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD VERY GOOD — The physical setup of the Samsung SCX-6555N required more steps than that of some devices in this class. Users stack the paper drawers in the desired location and then place the machine on top of the duplexer. Users must then open each drawer and insert three locking pins in place in the drawers. Users must also install the fax card and finisher, which simply slide into place in the device. Users must open the side door before opening the front door, behind which the drum and toner cartridge can be inserted. Users must turn the locking lever to the right until it clicks, remove the drum cartridge from its packaging and remove the protective tape and insert the drum cartridge in the front of the device. Next, the user should remove the toner cartridge from its packaging, shake it from side to side five or six times and insert it. Users must then turn the locking lever to the left until it clicks.  The Samsung SCX-6555N is bundled with two CDs. The drivers CD auto-launches and the automated driver installation process makes setup on the network very easy; the © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N BUYERS LAB port for the SCX-6555N is automatically created when installing the drivers. In addition, the drivers automatically detect installed accessories, further simplifying setup.  The typical installation, which installs the TWAIN/WIA-compliant scan driver, the PCL 6 and PostScript 3 drivers and Smart Panel, Network Scan and SyncThru utilities, takes only four clicks of the mouse.  Configuration of network settings can be easily performed from the control panel or remotely via the SyncThru Web Admin Service, SyncThru Web Service or SetIP software.  Print Drivers PRINT DRIVERS GOOD GOOD  The SCX-6555N comes with PostScript 3 and PCL 6 print drivers supporting Win- dows and Mac operating systems.  The PostScript and PCL drivers differ in appearance, which makes use more difficult for those who switch between them.  The drivers are bidirectional, enabling users to view paper size and remaining paper supply, along with toner status and error messages.  The drivers offer a good feature set that, in addition to paper and consumables gauges, includes secure print, the ability to save the settings for frequently used jobs and cover mode.  Although collate must be selected from the print screen within an application when printing from the PCL driver, as there is no selection in the driver, doing so does not increase file size.  Although selections for duplexing and orientation are found on the main tab of the driver, users must access the Paper tab to select the number of copies and the paper type, size and source. The PCL and PostScript drivers of the SCX-6555N differ in appearance and do not include all of the typical print job selections on the main tab. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 BUYERS LAB  Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N Applications Compatibility APPLICATIONS COMPATIBILITY EXCELLENT EXCELLENT  No problems were experienced with any of the test files used in the applications compatibility tests. Units are tested for compatibility on Windows 2000 platforms with Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 using 25 application test files, which contain text, graphics, halftone images, tables, etc., enabling BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, file processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.  Scan Functions SCAN FUNCTIONS VERY GOOD VERY GOOD  The SCX-6555N MFP was easy to use for scanning of documents to e-mail, FTP server, network folder and workstation (local folder).  E-mail addresses on the corporate mail server can be accessed at the control panel of the SCX-6555N MFP using LDAP. In addition, destinations can be programmed or entered at the control panel via the QWERTY touch-screen keypad or entered remotely into an address book via SyncThru Web Service.  Simplex scan to e-mail speeds are the fastest of competitive models in both black and color modes. When scanning in duplex, scan speed is competitive in color but below average in black.  Users can configure network scan settings from the desktop using Network Scan Manager. Network Scan Manager  SmarThru Office provides users with a single program to manage and view scan, fax and print jobs for the SCX-6555N. The SmarThru Office toolbar provides users with a shortcut to easily access scan and fax functions at the desktop. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 BUYERS LAB Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N  While the SCX-6555N supports direct printing from and scanning to a USB flash drive, the USB port is almost hidden; it is located on the left side near the power switch and network cable.  When a flash drive is plugged into the USB port on the SCX-6555N, a USB icon appears at the control panel; users can touch the icon to access the drive.  Users can scan to multiple e-mail destinations at once, but not to multiple scan des- tinations, such as e-mail, network folder and FTP, in a single session. SmarThru Desktop allows users to easily view and organize scanned documents.  Print/Copy Quality pRINT/COPY QUALITY GOOD GOOD  Print output produced by the Samsung SCX-6555N was good overall. Text was fully formed and rated above average for darkness and sharpness, while the smoothness of curves and serifs was average. An average amount of toner overspray and haloing was visible, but only when text was viewed under magnification. Diagonal lines had an average amount of stair-stepping, and consistency of line thickness was also average. Although halftone output was visible over a broad range, dot-fill areas from 10% to 40% were too dark and output was grainy. Solids were rated above average for darkness and average for consistency of coverage.  Copy output produced by the Samsung SCX-6555N was also good. Text had an average amount of breakup; darkness, sharpness of characters, as well as the smoothness of curves and serifs, were average. Line art was good; diagonal lines had an average amount of stair-stepping and lines showed an average amount of breakup. While an average amount of haloing and toner overspray was visible in a visual examination, heavy haloing and toner overspray were visible under magnification. Halftone range is an issue for the Samsung SCX-6555N, with halftone output visible only beginning at the 53% dot-fill level; the lightest two levels—15% and 29%—were not reproduced. In addition, the darkest levels of grayscale lacked clear separation and output exhibited an average amount of graininess and banding. In solids, darkness and consistency of toner coverage were above average. © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N BUYERS LAB  Print/Copy Productivity print/copy PRODUCTIVITY VERY GOOD/GOOD VERY GOOD/GOOD  Overall copy efficiency rates are competitive in 1:1 mode, while efficiency in 1:2 and 2:2 modes is above average when compared to products in this class tested. Actual tested running speeds are faster than average in all three modes.  While print productivity is competitive in simplex mode, productivity in duplex mode is above average when compared to products in this class tested.  First-print times for all file types used in testing (Word, PowerPoint, JPEG, TIFF and PDF) are among the fastest for multifunction printers in this speed range tested to date.  First-copy times from the platen and from the ADF are competitive when compared to multifunction printers in this speed range tested to date. — When printing from the PostScript driver, the SCX-6555N MFP completed BLI’s 19page job stream at 33.82 percent of its rated engine speed, which is below average for multifunction printers tested. BLI technicians attribute this poor performance to the fact that the SCX-6555N pauses between jobs.  When printing from the PCL driver, the SCX-6555N MFP completed BLI’s 19-page job stream at 67.14 percent of its rated engine speed, which is above average.  Ease OF of Use EASE USE VERY GOOD very good  As a printer, the SCX-6555N offers good ease of use from the desktop via its print drivers, and its easy-to-follow installation process makes setting up the drivers quick and easy.  Loading paper was easy, as was adjusting the paper drawers for different sizes, requiring the user to move sliding width and length guides, which is preferable to systems that have a removable length guide that must be reinserted. The bypass tray was found to be somewhat hard to open and is not intelligent; i.e., users must enter the size of paper in the bypass via the control panel.  The new paper size is automatically detected after it is placed in the drawer, but by default a message appears prompting the user to confirm the new paper size (this prompt can be turned off for one or all of the drawers by an administrator). If the administrator does not turn off this prompt, a user might walk away from the device and expect the programmed copy or print job to be completed and return to the device later to find out that the SCX-6555N is still waiting for the user to confirm the paper size. — When attempting to remove misfeeds, the user must open multiple access doors on the SCX-6555N to be able to retrieve the misfed sheet. In addition, the misfeed door © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. WARNING: This material is copyrighted by Buyers Laboratory Inc. and is the sole property of Buyers Laboratory. Smart Panel is automatically installed with the printer software. The Smart Panel program displays the current status of the printer and the level of toner remaining in the toner cartridges and allows users to change settings. If an error occurs while printing, the Smart Panel utility will pop-up automatically; users can also proactively access the utility to obtain information on status. Administrators and users can also receive e-mail notification when there is an error or if a consumable needs to be replaced.  Feature FEATURESet SET VERY GOOD GOOD  When compared with competitive multifunction printers with support for up to legal- size output, the Samsung SCX-6555N offers a competitive standard memory capacity of 256 MB, which can be upgraded to 384 MB; however, some competitive models offer a higher maximum paper capacity.  The Samsung SCX-6555N comes standard with an 80-GB hard drive. Some competitive systems offer 40-GB hard drives or offer hard drives only as options.  Although the standard paper capacity of 520 sheets is below average when compared to multifunction printers in this speed range, the maximum paper capacity of 3,240 sheets is among the highest.  Samsung offers an optional 500-sheet finisher that staples up to 50 sheets per set.  Equipped with a 50-sheet reversing automatic document feeder and automatic duplexing, the SCX-6555N offers book copying, booklet mode, cover and sheet insertion, transparency interleaving, zoom and preset reduction and enlargement and an ID card copy feature that enables copying of both sides of cards (such as driver’s licenses and medical insurance cards) onto one side of a sheet.  The SCX-6555N includes a Direct Printing utility to allow users to print PDF and TIFF files without having to open the application. Users can open the utility or simply drag and drop the file to be printed onto the shortcut icon on the desktop for this utility.  SmarThru Office provides users with a single program to manage and view scan, fax and print jobs for the SCX-6555N.  Samsung’s Jscribe open architecture platform allows for the integration of Samsung and third-party document management solutions. 10 © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc. August 2007 Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N BUYERS LAB SUPPORTING TEST DATA Test Environment This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot test lab, in an environment monitored by a Honeywell Temp/RH chart recorder, which replicates typical office conditions. Test Equipment BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2000 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows XP workstations, 10BaseT/ 100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling. Test Duration Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run for half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with varying daily test volumes designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday. This variable schedule includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day. Tested Configuration Samsung SCX-6555N, plus the optional fax kit, optional paper feeder. Test Procedures The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, which include a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation under a Graphiclite D5000 Standard Viewer, color print quality is tested using the ANSI standard IT8 Color Test Target, which is read using the Minolta CM503I Spectrophotometer/X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 500 Series Densitometer. Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent postconsumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (96 brightness, 22-lb. bond). Buyers Laboratory Inc. Michael Danziger CEO Lynn Nannariello Asst. August 2007 Lab Test Report  Samsung SCX-6555N BUYERS LAB Job Stream Evaluation Job Stream in Black Mode: The unit completed the job stream using the PCL 6 driver in 30.82 seconds, running at 37.0 ppm, which translates to an efficiency rate of 67.3%. Job Stream in Black Mode: The unit completed the job stream using the PostScript 3 driver in 57.03 seconds, running at 20.0 ppm, which translates to an efficiency rate of 36.3%. BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the printer as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the unit operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the unit. Problems encountered: When printing from the PostScript driver, the unit pauses between jobs.  PRINT DRIVERS Print Drivers Samsung SCX-6555N Print Driver Features Windows XP PCL 6 PostScript 3 Auto Feature/Device Detection Yes Yes Booklet Printing Yes Yes Collate Sets No No Max paper sources per job 2 1 Mirror Image No Yes Negative Image N-up Printing Overlay No Yes 2 to 16 2 to 16 Yes No Paper Gauge No No Print and Save Yes Yes Proof Print Quantity Selection Reduction/Enlargement Resolution Modes Save Settings Secure Printing Watermarks/Custom Watermarks Yes Yes Up to 999 Up to 9,999 Auto; 25% to 400% Auto; 1% to 1000% 600 (Normal); 1200 (Best) 600 (Normal); 1200 (Best) Yes No Yes Yes Yes/Yes No Send once/print many: For output to be properly collated, the collate selection must be made from the Windows print screen within an application; doing so, however, does not increase file size. 20 © 2009 Buyers Laboratory Inc.
