LACKAWANNA RiverTour II: a six-hour BUS tour to four sites along the Lackawanna River. Beginning in Scranton we will travel up river to Uniondale. 9:00 AM: Meet at gravel parking lot in front of ICE BOX at Providence Road and Olive Street in Scranton. Orientation to Lackawanna River Access points and LRCA’s River & trail access guide booklet. (Copies of this booklet will be available to tour participants). Participants should be prepared for a 6-hour motor tour. At our stops we will get out of the bus and walk about to have interpretive orientation to the sites location, history, ecology and significance. LRCA will provide beverages, deli sandwiches and snacks to participants. 9:30 AM: Depart for the LVC’s Providence Reach Trail Preserve in North Scranton. The Route will follow the Scranton Flood Control Levees to orient participants to access points along the river levee in Scranton. The Providence Reach Trail runs on the former New York, Ontario and Western Railway from the Silkman House upriver to the Plot Neighborhood. Riparian flood plain plant communities and habitat are found along this reach of trail. 10:30 AM: Depart Providence Reach and follow the river Up Valley through the Marvine area, Lower Throop, pass Boulevard Bend Preserve and cross the river into Dickson City. Note the access points to the Dickson Levee trail and Enterprise Street. Follow Enterprise Street to Valley Junction for an on the bus interpretation of this site and the nearby former Olyphant and Eddy Creek Collieries. 11:20 AM: Arrive at Condella Park in Olyphant; debark for a 1.5-mile walk along the river trails in Condella and Mellow Park. Rejoin the bus at Rt. 247 entrance to Mellow Park in Peckville at 12:00 PM. Orientation to access points for Mid Valley reach of O&W Trail. 12:15 PM: Detour to Winton for orientation to Trail Access points. 12:30 PM Detour to Archbald for orientation to Trail Access Points. 12:45 PM Arrive at Powder Mill Dam Preserve in Jermyn for a Picnic Lunch. 1:30 PM: Depart Powder Mill Dam for Carbondale. Orientation to Trail Access points in Mayfield, Carbondale Township and the City of Carbondale. 2:15 PM: Arrive at Panther Bluff Preserve along the O&W and D& H rail trails along the Upper Lackawanna River in Simpson just north of Carbondale along PA route 171. View shed at Panthers Bluff Creek is a miniature Rickett’s Glen: a steeply plunging creek in a Rhododendron Ravine. Nearby there is a double waterfall and plunge pool along the river. 3:00 PM: Depart Panther Bluff for Forest City and Uniondale following the O& W and D&H Trails. 3:45 PM: Arrive at Rail Trail Office in Uniondale 4:00 PM: Depart Uniondale for Scranton 4:45 PM: Arrive in Scranton; Conclude event. All participants will get a copy of the Lackawanna River & Trail Access Points booklet and an orientation to other sites accessible through following the booklet will be available to folks who would like to do some independent explorations along the Lackawanna River and tributary streams.
