Teams: Each team has ten players on the field) 3 attackers, 3 midfielders, 3 defense, and 1 goalie). Each player has a long-handled stick with a webbed pouch (basket) to catch and maneuver a ball into opposing team’s goal. Scoring: A goal is worth 1 point when the ball crosses the entire goal line and is between the posts/uprights of the goal. Terminology: 1. Cradling – rocking the stick back and forth keeping the ball in the webbing of the stick. 2. Face-off – method of starting the game (ball in center of field between center forwards). Sticks on ground waiting whistle to begin or resume game. 3. Passing – Any ball that goes from one stick to another and is caught, whether it rolls, bounces, or is in the air. 4. Scooping – To pick up the ball from off the round using the webbing of the stick. 5. Shooting – to throw ball from the webbing of the stick in direction of goal. 6. Webbing – the end of the stick in which the ball can be carried or caught. The webbing of basket is made of rope/string. Playing Regulations: 1. Play is started at the beginning of each period and after each goal has been scored by facing the ball in the center of the field (face-off). 2. When a ball goes out of bounds crossing a boundary line, possession is given to the team not touching it last. This is not true on a shot or goal, or a deflected shot to the goal, in which the out-of-bounds is awarded to the player closest to it when it goes out. 3. Entering the goal crease – Players on the attacking team are not allowed within the goal crease. Defensive players are not allowed to enter the crease with the ball in their possession. The goalkeeper with the ball may remain in the goal crease for only 4 seconds. 4. No attacking player is allowed in the goal crease. You may reach in with your stick to play the ball but both feet must be outside the crease. 5. A pass going out-of-bounds or a player stepping out-of-bounds will result in a throw-in for the opposing team from the spot where it occurred. Class Modifications: 1. We will speed up the game by having the goalie that was scored on pass the ball out to his/her defense to begin play. Before this pass is made, the team scoring must retreat back to their starting positions (behind the center line) to restart the game.
2. If a player is running with the ball in their webbing of their stick, he/she must be tagged in order to be stopped from running. The player must then pass or shoot the ball. 3. If the ball is loose on the ground, only one player from each team may jockey or battle for the ball without pushing or slashing. They must either scoop or push the ball to him/herself or a teammate. 4. No wild stick checking at the ball on the ground or in the air!
FOOTBALL TERMINOLOGY DOWN: That part of the game, which starts with a snap from the center and ends when the ball is dead. END ZONE: The area of the field from the goal line to the end line where a touchdown is scored. INTERCEPTION: A defensive player that catches a pass intended for an offensive player. GOAL LINE: The zero yard line at each end of the field. OFF SIDES: When any part of a player is beyond the line of scrimmage before a play begins, except the center. FUMBLE: Losing control of the ball and dropping it so that the ball touches the ground. A fumble is a live ball and the ball may be advanced until a player’s flag is pulled. SCORING A touchdown = 6pts. A touchdown is made when the runner carries the ball across the goal line or a pass in completed in the end zone. CENTERING THE BALL · The ball is centered from the ground to the quarterback to start a play. · The ball may be centered between the legs of the center or from the side of the body. LINE OF SCRIMMAGE · Both the offensive and defensive teams must start a play from their side of the ball. They must remain there until the ball is centered. · The defensive team may not go across the line of scrimmage for 5 seconds after the play starts. (Count: “one football, two football…five football”) · The spot where the flag from the ball carrier is removed is the location of the next down. OFFENSIVE PLAY · A forward pass can only be made from behind the line of scrimmage. · A receiver must have at least one foot in bounds to catch a pass. · A team has 4 downs or plays to score a touchdown. DEFENSIVE PLAY · The defensive team attempts to pull a flag off the ball carrier’s belt in order to stop a play. · After making an interception or a fumble recovery, the defensive team may run the ball towards their goal line in order to score a touchdown. DEAD BALL SITUATIONS (end of down): · When the ball carrier has a flag removed by the other team or tagged by the other team · When the ball or the player with the ball goes out of bounds · An incomplete forward pass · Following a touchdown STARTING THE GAME (and AFTER A TOUCHDOWN): · A team may throw the ball to the other team · A team may punt the ball to the other team · A team may have a member of his/her team hold the ball on the ground and kick off to the other team · Once the ball is kicked/thrown, the receiving team catches the football and runs towards their end zone, or picks up the football and runs towards their end zone. · There is NOT a line of scrimmage until the person is down after the kickoff.
