Large Lithium Batteries Lithium batteries (LIFEPO4) only weigh 30% of conventional lead acid batteries. Upto 90% of the energy capacity can be used instantly compared to 60% from lead acid batteries. Over 2000 cycles life span and a high safety standard make these the perfect energy source for any electric marine propulsion system. An advanced battery monitoring system is included with all battery packs as well as the Suitable battery charger (240 V). Battery packs purchased from aquawatt / all4solar will be supplied fully prewired ready to connect to the engine. Lithium batteries are assembled from single cells in various sizes where each has 3.2 volts (nominal) and from 1 to 500 amps current. So practicaly any voltage and current can be supplied, suitable to your application. Here some examples of batteries we supply including monitoring system (BMS) and charger in fibre glas boxes. fully enclosed. Type Capacity Total weight Size Price $ incl. There are local suppliers offering suitable battery packs. Here are some facts about the setup of a lithium battery pack (LIFEPO4). We recommend to purchase a battery pack including BMS and charger. Alternatively you can purchase the cells and the BMS / charger individually which requires sufficient knowledge. We supply our battery packs with a suitable main fuse and a battery emergency / main switch for safety reasons. CELLS A LIFEPO4 cell has a nominal voltage of 3.2 volts and is available in numerous shapes and capacities (from 1 to 500 Amps). For an output of nominal 51.2 volts, 16 cells in series per pack are required. The cells in one pack are usualy connected with copper strips. The cells, the connectors and the cables have to be suitable for a discharge rate of 300 Amp (cables 50 mm2) for the large aquawatt engines. BMS Lithium cells should be protected against over– and undercharge as well as an inbalance of cell voltages within a pack. The easiest method is the use of cell modules which are just mounted between the positive and negative connector of each cell. The modules are then wired to a main controll unit which also feeds the battery charger. CHARGER The battery charger charges the battery upto 3.65 volts per cell and then cuts off. The charger can be operated as stand alone system or connected to the BMS. Do never use cheap lead acid chargers for lithium cells, as lithium cells have a different charge characteristics. If charged with solar power, use an advanced MPPT controller. BATTERY MONITOR Charge efficiency: 99% Peukert exponent: 1.02 Max. charged voltage: 3.6 V / cell (3.2 nom) Min. voltage: 2.8 V Charge voltage: 4 V max. BOX SWITCH / FUSE The battery monitor is a device like the fuel gauge in a conventional car. The system measures the discharged and charged wattage and indicates data like voltage and power consumption. It can be part of the BMS. The various sizes of cells allow a quite flexible sizing of the battery box. A large battery can be splitted in several boxes to distribute the weight in the boat. We recommend to use acrylic or aluminium boxes. The battery should be connected via a main switch and a fuse to the engine and sized according to the maximum current drawn by the engine. Small Lithium Batteries Small lithium battery packs below 0.5 kw h do not need to include a BMS system, but have to be secured against overcharging (over 3.65 V per cell) or under charging (less than 2.7 V per cell). Only use suitable battery chargers with electronic charge controll (no cheap analogue chargers for car batteries). Do not connect two individual lithium battery packs in series. Parallel connection is no problem. Always order battery packs with the correct voltage (12 V / 24 V / 48 V etc.). Nominal voltage per cell: 3.2 V Maximum charge voltage per cell: 3.65 V Minimum voltage per cell: 2.7 V CELLS A 12 Volt battery contains 4 cells which results in 12.8 volts that is suitable to replace any 12 V lead acid battery. Always make sure, that the maxium allowed continuous discharge complies with the power the engine uses. Example: 12.8 V / 20 Ah battery - recommended continuous discharge rate 1 C = 20 Amps / Max. 60 Amps 12.8 V x 20 Amps = 256 watt hours / 12.8 V x 60 Amps = 768 watt hours max. 12 V motor with 400 watts (about 25-30 lbs thrust) - 20 Amp battery at 75% average power = 30-40 min. (if always used at full throttle for more than 15 minutes, we recommend to use 40 Ah battery capacity) 24 V motor with 1200 watts (about 70-86 lbs thrust) - 40 Amp battery at 75% average power = 1 hour CHARGER For the small lithium batteries a good full automatic car battery charger can be used. Make sure you have the main fuse connected between the charger and the battery in case of a short circuit. Make sure you charge a 12 Volt lithium battery pack with a 12 Volt charger only. If you use RC-lithium batteries (lithium polymer) only charge with suitable chargers with cell balancers. We do not recommend those batteries. BATTERY Small lithium batteries are supplied assembled in a box with two poles to connect to the charger / engine like a lead acid battery. We include a suitable main fuse, a main switch, plugs and cables. SWITCH / FUSE The battery should be connected via a main switch and a fuse to the engine and sized according to the maximum current drawn by the engine. Aquawatt supplies this with every battery pack.
