LASER AND INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) SOURCES FOR DERMATOLOGY DISTANCE COURSE Mode: Distance Course Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Sources for Dermatology Presented by Prof Laurie Walsh Course Designed for: Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) sources for dermatology (skin rejuvenation) and hair removal (suitable for persons who wish to obtain a RSO certificate for cosmetic procedures involving laser apparatus or a use licence for laser cosmetic procedures or for maintenance, repair or commissioning of laser apparatus). Users of dermatology/hair removal lasers or intense pulsed lights (IPL), i.e. beauticians, registered nurses, medical practitioners, cosmetic physicians, ENTs, plastic surgeons, dermatologists or trade reps for these types of medical equipment. This course is NOT for dentistry. Course Summary: This course is designed for new users of lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) units in dermatology (with or without incorporated radiofrequency) for hair removal, and various skin treatments such as treatment of telangiectasia, and skin rejuvenation. Its content and design are designed to align with Australian Standard 4173 (Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care). There is an emphasis is on mechanisms of action, selection of appropriate techniques, and safety issues for the operator and the client. The course includes an overview of the structure and characteristics of skin, and the processes of hair growth and skin pigmentation. It assumes no prior knowledge or experience with the structure and pathology of human skin. The course is accredited by Radiation Health Queensland. Delivery: Course work provided in hard copy and digital version on USB Cost: $440 (inc GST) Upon successful completion of the written examination, a certificate of completion will be forwarded which will assist the candidate with their application for obtaining the appropriate use licence from Radiation Health Queensland. Course objectives: At the completion of this course, the candidate will be able to: 1. Understand the basic structure of the skin 2. Understand the processes of hair growth and pigmentation and hair 3. Appreciate the limitations of various methods of hair removal 4. Comprehend the importance of skin type in the selection of clinical techniques 5. Understand how the effects of intense light sources vary according to the wavelength, power density, energy density, and other factors 6. Understand the range of interactions of light with various components of the skin 7. Appreciate the optical hazards posed by lasers and IPL units 8. Appreciate the range of non-optical hazards posed by lasers and how these can be minimised 9. Select appropriate protective eyewear for clinical use 10.
