AE01 AUTOMOTIVE & ENGINEERING VISION INSPECTION SYSTEMS www.intervisionglobal.com Laser Marking and Verification System InterVision Global have, along with TQC Ltd; a provider of special purpose, turnkey engineering solutions, designed and integrated a solution for the automatic Laser Marking and Verification of parts for Metaldyne International (UK) Ltd; a leading manufacturer of automotive engine, transmission and drivetrain components. Marking and verification is relied on in many industries, particularly in the automotive industry, to ensure traceability. High volume production, demanding quality standards and continuous year-on-year cost reductions have resulted in vision technology playing a significant role in the automation of processes. Mark Worlidge, Managing Director InterVision Global comments “a tough, harsh manufacturing environment such as this requires a robust and repeatable solution that stands the test of time and that’s where we deliver results, using all our experience and industry expertise built up over the last decade.” The bespoke TRUMPF TruMark 6020 OEM laser used in the application is designed for the automatic laser marking and verification of parts. This specific machine handles circular automotive components, laser marking part numbers, graphics and technical information including timing marks and a ‘Grade A’ 2D barcode matrix (also known as a Datamatrix or DMX code) onto external circumferential faces. A particular benefit of this solution is that it has the ability to adjust the focal length of the laser marker automatically through the laser marking process. Parts are handled via two stations which allow the simultaneous operations of loading/ unloading to be carried out during the automatic laser marking/verification process. The location tooling aligns and datums the part whilst a mechanism engages with the tooling at the marking station to accurately lift and rotate the part to allow the laser marking. The marking is carried out in segments with the Continued overleaf AE01 AUTOMOTIVE & ENGINEERING system interfacing the rotary position of the part with the laser output. The vision verification is carried out at an offset position after the laser marking and uses encoder information of the rotary position interfaced with a line scan camera to form a picture of the laser marked information. This picture is then verified by the vision software, integrated by InterVision Global. “Although we’ve designed and manufactured custom marking systems before, this was our first based on laser technology,” explains Mark Lees, Technical Support Engineer at TQC. “A particular benefit of this solution is that it has the capability to adjust the focal length of the laser marker automatically through the laser marking process allowing the marking of two different diameters. Furthermore, the cycle time is short, less than 30 seconds, and components are handled via a two-station indexing table to allow simultaneous loading/ unloading operations to be carried out during automatic marking and verification. “We are busier than we’ve ever been and part of the reason for this is the automotive industry, which is booming at the moment,” says Mr Lees. “We are in demand because we can supply complete solutions in line with customer requirements. This includes design, manufacture, testing, commissioning, installation and ongoing support.” InterVision Global plays a crucial part in this process and, indeed, Metaldyne International are so pleased with the installation that they now intend to mark another component using the same, robust system.
