Check the delivery to make sure that none of the components is missing. 2. Mount the LD-PDS on site and align the device to the field to be protected. 3. Loosen the interface adapter on the underside of the device and remove the adapter. 4. Connect the cable for the 24 V DC power supply through the conduit thread to the 6-pole terminal block. Use cores with a cross-section at least 1.0 mm2 (18 AWG) with max. 20 m (65.6 ft) in length. 5. Depending on application, connect the switching outputs “Alarm (1 + 2)“ and “Safe (1 + 2)“ on the 6-pole terminal block (cross-section at least 0.25 mm2(24 AWG)). 6. Place the interface adapter onto the LD-PDS and secure. 7. Switch on the power supply to the für LD-PDS. The LD-PDS carries out a self-test and initializes. The green LED blinks. The scanner head starts to rotate. 8. Connect the LD-PDS to the RS 232/RS 422 interface of the PC (COM 1), depending on the interface type of the LD-PDS. To do so, connect a suitable data cable to the 9-pin D Sub plug of the interface adapter. An RS 232/RS 422 converter may be required. 9. Switch on your PC and start WindowsTM (requirement: Windows 98TM, Windows METM, Windows 2000TM or Windows XPTM). 10. Install the CD-ROM-based “LD-PDS“ configuration software supplied on your PC. 11. Start LD-PDS. 12. Choose the desired language in the menu under LANGUAGE. 13. In the LD-PDS menu, choose a setting profile under ACQUISITION PARAMETERS (Scanning field with assigned angular resolution), e. g. 90/270° (0.125°). 14. Confirm the ACQUISITION PARAMETERS dialog box with OK. 15. Enter SICK_LDA in the password dialog box and confirm with OK. The software “LD-PDS“ establishes a connection with the LD-PDS automatically. 16. Choose FIELD A under FIELD EDITOR. The PARAMETRIZATION OF FIELD A dialog box is displayed. 17. Parameterize protection field A within the displayed boundary line (green) for the scanning field. To do so, use the left mouse button to set individual points along the boundary line at intervals of approx. 10 cm (3.9 in) to create an enclosed field (blue) within the boundary line. 18. If necessary, define an ON/OFF delay for the associated switching output A (“Safe 2“). To do so, click on the PARAMETER button. 19. To send the configured field A to the LD-PDS, click the SEND button. 20. To save the configuration of the LD-PDS on the PC, click the SAVE (disk symbol) button. The SELECTION OF TEXT FILES dialog box is displayed. 21. Select the desired folder. To finish, click on the SAVE button. 22. To close protection field A, click the cross right on top in the title of the dialog box. Carry out the same procedure to configure the protection field B with the switching output B (“Safe 1“) as decribed in Step 16. to 21. for protection field A (do not close the PARAMETRIZATION of FIELD B dialog box). 23. Click the MONITORING MODE button to change to the protection mode. The yellow LED (2) starts to flash. The device is in measurement mode. A field infringement is signaled by means of the appropriate switching outputs/the yellow LED (1). The LD-PDS is ready for operation with the new settings. following variants of the LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner: • LD-PDS with RS 422 data interface • LD-PDS with RS 232 data interface The LD-PDS is based on the LD-OEM laser measurement system and is used with an internal application (program) to protect planes during room monitoring. The document contains information on: • Assembly and electrical installation • Commissioning • Operation and configuration (parameterization) • Maintenance • Replacing devices and transferring parameter sets From this point on, the LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner and all its variants will simply be referred to as “LD-PDS“, with the exeption of text locations at which a distinction is necessary. Confusion of the LD-PDS product designation with the configuration software “LD-PDS“ is thereby excluded in that the word “software“ or “configuration software“ is added referring to the software and not to the device. 1.2 Target Audience This document is aimed at those who carry out the following activities: 1.2.1 Assembly, Electrical Installation, Maintenance, and Replacement Electricians and service technicians 1.2.2 Commissioning, Operation, and Configuration Technicians and engineers 1.3 Information Content This document contains all the information required for assembling, electrically installing, and commissioning the LD-PDS with the factory default settings. Step-by-step instructions are provided for all the relevant activities. Commissioning and basic parameterization of the LD-PDS are carried out by the “LD-PDS“ configuration software running on PC. The LD-PDS monitors up to two freely definable fields on one plane within any scanning field. A field infringement is signaled by means of the appropriate switching outputs. The switching signals are processed further by a user-specific security or building management system. For further information on laser measuring technology, please contact the Auto Ident division at SICK AG or visit the SICK Web site at www.sick.com. 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident · Germany · All rights reserved 1-1 Notes On This Document Chapter 1 Operating Instructions LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner 1.4 Symbols Used Certain information in this documentation is specially highlighted to draw your attention to it: Warning Warnings protect against injuries or serious damage to the LD-PDS. ¾ Note Reference Explanations Recommendations Default settings BAUD RATE Always read warnings carefully and follow them at all times. The LD-PDS measures its environment in two-dimensional polar coordinates. When a measuring beam strikes an object, the position is determined with regard to the distance and direction. Fig. 3-2: Measuring principle of the LD-PDS (schematic) The scan is carried out in a 360° sector. The LD-PDS ranges on bright, natural surfaces (a white house wall, for example) are approx. 100 m (328 ft). Fig. 3-3: 3-4 Top view of the LD-PDS measurement result (contour) © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident · Germany · All rights reserved 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 Operating Instructions Product Description Chapter 3 LD-PDS A maximum of two protection fields (A and B) on one plane can be defined in the LD-PDS using the “LD-PDS“ configuration software. If one of these fields is infringed (fault), the LD-PDS outputs an appropriate signal via its switching outputs. A connected security system can then trigger an alarm. Field intact: output = high Fig. 3-4: 3.2.1 Field infringed: output = low Measuring principle of the LD-PDS (illustration of a field infringement) Distance Measurement The LD-PDS uses a laser diode to emit pulsated laser beams. When a light pulse strikes an object, it is reflected off the surface. A photodiode in the receiver of the LD-PDS registers this reflection. The distance to the object is calculated from the propagation time required by the light from the point at which the beam is emitted until the reflection is received by the LD-PDS. A similar “time-of-flight“ measurement principle is used in radar systems. A mirror in the scanner head diverts the emitted laser beams to make a circular scan of the environment. The measurements are triggered by an absolute shaft-angle encoder at regular angle steps. Fig. 3-5: 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 Systematic design of the LD-PDS © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident· Germany · All rights reserved 3-5 Product Description Chapter 3 Operating Instructions LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner 3.2.2 Direction Measurement The scanner head rotates with a frequency of 5 to 20 Hz (variable). A laser pulse is emitted in accordance with an angle step of, for example, 0.25° (variable), thereby triggering a distance measurement. The maximum angular resolution is 0.125°. This is set by the angle encoder at 5,760 steps. The angular resolution can be selected as an integral multiple of 0.125°. Using the “LD-PDS“ configuration software, the LD-PDS provides 3 setting profiles: Scanning field Angular resolution Head rotations 0 to 360° 0.1875° = 3/16° 5 Hz 270 to 90° 0.125° = 1/8° 5 Hz 90 to 270° 0.125° = 1/8° 5 Hz 45 to 315° 0.125° = 1/8° 5 Hz Tab. 3-2: "LD-PDS" configuration software: pre-configured setting profiles Depending on the setting profile the scanning field and orientation of the LD-PDS is shown numerically and graphically in the “Acquisition Parameters“ dialog box (Fig. 3-6). Fig. 3-6: "LD-PDS" configuration software: “Acquisition Parameters“ dialog box If other scanning fields, angular resolutions and head rotations are required, the individual configuration can be used to parameterize the setting profiles manually. Note The mean pulse frequency over a 360° scan angle must not exceed 10.8 kHz. The maximum pulse frequency must not exceed 14.4 kHz. The minimum time between 2 laser pulses is 70 µs (= 14.4 kHz). Refer to Section 6.4.10 “Acquisition Parameters“ dialog window, Page 6-7. 3-6 © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident · Germany · All rights reserved 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 Operating Instructions Product Description Chapter 3 LD-PDS 3.3 Factors Influencing the Measurement The signal received from a perfectly diffuse, reflective white surface is equal to a reflectivity of 100 %. By this definition, reflectivity values of over 100 % can be achieved with surfaces that reflect bundled light (mirrored surfaces, reflectors) Fig. 3-7: Factors influencing the measurement: reflection of light beam on object surface Most surfaces diffuse the reflection of the laser beam in different directions (Fig. 3-7). The quality of the reflection depends on the structure and color of the surface. Bright surfaces reflect the laser beam better than dark surfaces and can be detected by the LD-PDS over greater distances. Bright white plaster reflects approx. 100 % of the light that shines onto it, while black cellular rubber only reflects 1.8 %. On very rough surfaces, part of the energy is lost through shade, which decreases the range of the LD-PDS. 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident· Germany · All rights reserved 3-7 Chapter 3 Product Description Operating Instructions LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner Fig. 3-8: Factors influencing the measurement: angle of reflection The angle of reflection corresponds to the angle of the beam. If the light beam strikes a surface at right angles, the maximum amount of energy is reflected (Fig. 3-9). If the light beam strikes a surface at an angle, energy and range is lost accordingly (Fig. 3-8). Fig. 3-9: Factors influencing the measurement: degree of reflection If more than 100 % of the energy is reflected (based on the Kodak standard), the beam striking an object is reflected at an angle rather than diffused in different directions. In this way, the laser distance measurer can receive a large proportion of the energy emitted. Plastic reflectors (cat's-eyes), reflective foil, and triple prisms possess these qualities. 3-8 © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident · Germany · All rights reserved 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 Operating Instructions Product Description Chapter 3 LD-PDS Fig. 3-10: Factors influencing the measurement: reflective surfaces On reflective surfaces, the laser beam is almost completely diverted (Fig. 3-10). Instead of the mirror surface, the object struck by the diverted laser beam is detected. Fig. 3-11: Factors influencing the measurement: object smaller than diameter of laser beam Objects that are smaller than the diameter of the laser beam cannot reflect all of its energy (Fig. 3-11). The energy in the section of the beam that does not strike the object is lost, which means that the range is smaller than it normally would be as a result of the reflective properties of the surface of the object. 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident· Germany · All rights reserved 3-9 Product Description Chapter 3 Operating Instructions LD-PDS Protection & Detection Scanner 3.3.1 Note Characteristic Values for Reflection and Range The better a surface reflects a beam, the greater the range of the LD-PDS. Size (mm) LD-PDS Beam Diameter (divergence) Space between two measurement points of the LD-PDS Distance (m) Fig. 3-12: Angle step and measuring beam divergence at 0.125° The line separating the dark and light-gray fields represents the space between two measurement points of the LD-PDS in relation to the distance. With an angular resolution of 0.125° and 0.25° , the LD-PDS scans the entire field. With larger angular resolutions, gaps exist between the measuring points on the object (depending on the distance). Example of a scan with an angular resolution of 0.125°: Distance of 40 m (131.2 ft): A 40 m distance intersection with a dividing line yields a measuring point distance of approx. 80 mm (3.15 in) on the left axis. A 40 m distance intersection with an upper characteristic curve for the beam diameter yields a beam expansion of approximately 220 mm (8.67 in) on the left axis. The LD-PDS does not output any measured values/status of the switching outputs. 3.3.4 Switching Outputs The LD-PDS contains four switching outputs (2 x “Safe“, 2 x “Alarm“) at which the external power supply is present as rest potential (high) in the inactive state in monitoring mode and which switch with respect to signal ground (low) in the active state. The outputs are assigned to the following functions: Switching output Function Alarm 1 (yellow LED 1) Infringement of protection field A or B (instantaneous activation) Alarm 2 (yellow LED 2) Protection mode is active (rest potential) Safe 1 Switching output B: Infringement of protection field B (adjustable ON/OFF delay) Safe 2 Switching output A: Infringement of protection field A (adjustable ON/OFF delay) Tab. 3-4: Function of the switching outputs The switching times can be delayed for switching outputs A (“Safe 2“) and B (“Safe 1“) independently of each other: The time that elapses between switch-on when a field infringement occurs and switch-off when the infringement is removed can be parameterized (Fig. 3-13). In each case, this can be between 0.2 and 199 s with a resolution of 0.2 s. The switching outputs are identical with respect to their output function. The distance zero point is marked as a white spot on the top of the scanner head. In a countersunk installation for the LD-PDS on a wall ledge or in a recess, the expansion of the laser beam with increasing distance along the wall must be taken into account. If the device is not installed properly, the laser beam may continuously strike the wall (or object attached to it) in the scanning field depending on the distance and position of the protection field defined in the LD-PDS . Beam diameter at a distance of 15 m = (15 000 mm x 5 mrad) + 20 mm = 95 mm. Safety margin = 5 mm/m x 15 m = 75 mm (2.95 in). Distance to the optical axis = beam diameter/2 + safety margin = 95 mm/2 + 75 mm = 122.5 mm ~ 125 mm (4.9 in) Result: Over a distance of 15 m, the clearance between the lower edge of the device and the edge of the expanded laser beam is approx. 75 mm (2.95 in) (198 mm – 125 mm = 73 mm). 4.2.7 LS-70B Scan Finder (Laser Detector) The scan finder, which is available as an accessory, helps you align the LD-PDS during installation. 1. Switch the scan finder to measuring mode. To do so, press the green button. 2. Hold the scan finder in the area to which the laser beam will most likely be diverted. For entries that are not allowed, a warning message appears. For the configuration, the average pulse frequency of the laser diode must not be less than 10.8 kHz. The maximum pulse frequency should not exceed 14.4 kHz. The maximum pulse frequency is calculated as follows: Maximum pulse frequency = (head rotations / angle resolution) x 360° The average pulse frequency is calculated as follows: Average pulse frequency = (head rotations / angle resolution) x scan field In the example above, the manual entries result in the following values: • Scan field: 285° - 60° = 225° • Head rotations: 5 Hz • Angle resolution: 0.1875° This results in: Maximum pulse frequency = (5 Hz/0.1875°) x 360° = 9600 Hz = 9.6 kHz Average pulse frequency = (5 Hz/0.1875°) x 225° = 6000 Hz = 6.0 kHz 6-10 Recommendation To obtain detection as nearly without gaps as possible, the highest angle resolution (0.125°) should always be selected. For the head rotation, 5 Hz is recommended. An exception for the angle resolution applies when a scan field of 360° is selected. In this case, the angle resolution must be reduced to 0.1875°. A higher head rotation is coupled with a lower resolution and provides no advantage as a result of the internal processing times in the LD-PDS. Recommendation Replacing a LD-PDS the acquisition parameters for the scan field must be newly defined. In case individual settings must be manually configured, it is recommended to take note of this. © SICK AG · Division Auto Ident · Germany · All rights reserved 8010336/P656/2005-12-23 Operating Instructions Operation Chapter 6 LD-PDS Proceed as follows for the manual input of the configuration: ¾ Overwrite existing values with the new values. This file and thereby the set parameters are retained for a device replacement. • The acquisition parameters for the scan field must be newly defined (see Section 6.4.10 “Acquisition Parameters“ dialog window, Page 6-7. In case individual settings must be manually configured, it is recommended to take note of this. • When the configuration of the protection fields A und B were stored in a “*.cfg“ configuration file, the parameters can be transferred to the replacement device. Without a configuration file, the protection fields must be newly defined. • If a different scanning field for the LD-PDS was parameterized using LD Config, the corresponding parameter set must first be transferred from the LD Config configuration file to the replacement device. If the parameter set is not available as an archived configuration file in “LD Config“, the special scanning field must be reconfigured from scratch. The parameter set must then be transferred from "LD-PDS" configuration software to the replacement device along with the configured protection fields and switching outputs. Parameter sets can only be transferred to devices of the same type. Replace the LD-PDS in such a way as described below: 1. Switch off the power supply to the LD-PDS. 2. Loosen the bolts for securing the interface adapter on the underside of the device and carefully remove the adapter vertically. 3. Loosen the screws for securing the LD-PDS to the bracket and remove the device. 4. Install the replacement device accordingly. 5. Place the interface adapter onto the replacement device and secure. 10.4.1 10-4 Downloading the parameters from configuration file in "LD-PDS" configuration software 1.
