T his H M I Lift Silencer is recommended for diesel engine applications. I t is not designed to withstand the high pressure associated with an internal detonation of uncombusted petrol fumes commonly known as backfire. T he best safeguard against backfire is to maintain a well-tuned engine. I f the silencer is installed with a petrol engine, it is important to be aware of the following: A. An unturned or difficult to start petrol engine may result in an explosion or "backfire". B. Pe rsonal i njury or prope rty damage may re sult i f bac k fi re occurs. C. I n the e ve nt o f ba c k fi r e , thi s si l e nc e r ma y by physi c a l l y damaged and crack or come apart. Failure of the silencer as a result of back-fire may permit exhaust- cooling water or flotation water to collect in the bilge, jeopardising the stability of the boat. Should backfire occur, stop the engine, thoroughly examine the entire exhaust system, and have the engine checked before attempting to restart the engine. The overall design of the system, and choice of components, will have a result on the back pressure in the exhaust which is vital to the performance and life of the engine. HMI Lift Silencer Thank you for purchasing an HMI Lift silencer. Correct installation of your HMI Lift Silencer is vital to safety, and to avoid back-flooding of engine. The following information will help you to achieve correct installation and ensure a long and satisfactory life from the product. If you have any doubts at all then qualified help must be sought. 1 Connections to the silencer should be accomplished using Halyard supreme marine exhaust hose, which is type approved by Lloyds and DNV. Do not use oil or grease to lubricate hoses when installing. Wetting the inside of the hoses with water will help them to slip more easily over the silencer spigots. A minimum of 2 hose clamps must be used, Halyard can supply these. Securely tighten all hose clamps, but be careful not to over-tighten. 5 2 4 3 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. There must be at least 450 mm distance between the water injection point and the position of the silencer to allow adequate cooling of the exhaust gases. Maximum temperature during continuous operation of the silencer is limited to 110 degrees centigrade. Normally in a well designed system, the temperature of the silencer should be within the range of 50-85 degrees centigrade. Such operation will result in longer exhaust life. The swan neck must reach at least 450mm (18") above the waterline, when installed on hull centreline The top of the silencer should be at least 300mm (12") below the water injection point. The silencer must be installed as near as possible to the centreline of the hull, particularly where severe angles of heel are expected. The swan neck must be 450mm above heeled waterline. Remember that 15% of the volume of the exhaust hose may be water. The size of the silencer selected must be such that water draining into it will fill it by no more than one third. A siphon break must be used. The silencer should be positioned within 300mm of the centre line of the vessel, or to the engine on which it is installed. This is particularly important on sailing vessels where a substantial angle of heel can be encountered. On systems where the exhaust manifold is near or below the water line, a siphon break should be used to prevent the water flow continuing after the engine shutdown. In all installations, the silencer should be at the lowest point of the entire exhaust system. The top of the silencer should be at least 300mm below the exhaust manifold outlet for the best performance. If a distance less than 300mm is allowed, the margin of safety for preventing reverse flow of water toward the manifold will decrease. Warning This silencer must be drained before the boat is craned or transported and during the Winter.
