Just Imagine … Cast Iron, a form of cookware developed over a millennia ago remains as popular today as when it was used to prepare meals for the Pilgrims, Lewis and Clark and President William McKinley in 1896, the year Joseph Lodge began our foundry. Many of the pieces of Cast Iron cookware made in the Lodge Foundry over a century ago remain in use today (Lodge was sustainable before it was cool!). Cast Iron is one of only two metals compatible with induction stove tops (How did those medieval metallurgists know that?). Lodge, the sole U.S. manufacturer of Cast Iron Cookware and the oldest family-owned cookware company in the country, is based in the tiny town of South Pittsburgh, TN (Population 3,300). Lodge is the original green cookware. Imagine Adding Colours, and exceeding expectations … Lodge has expanded our brand with enamel-coated cast iron: with vibrant colours, contemporary styling and stainless steel handles; featuring gradated colours and traditional design. How It’s Made Our heat-treating process is not a coating of any kind. The process is very similar to blued or case-hardened steel, like you would find on certain gun barrels or tools. The superior heat retention and other benefits of cooking in cast iron are all the same. All of these Heat-Treated products are pre-seasoned as well. While we still recommend cleaning these pieces in the usual way, there is much less worry involved if proper care is not followed. These pieces have even survived hundreds of cycles in a commercial 2-minute dishwasher without showing any signs of rust.

Commercial wood underliners are constructed of 1.91 cm thick, cross laminated, cold forest hardwoods, which are computer routed and finished with water resistant oil and/or lacquer.

The age and growing conditions of the cold forest hardwood used in our underliners creates density discrepancies. Due to these variations in density, each underliner can differ in the absorption of paints and oils used on the exterior finish, limiting control of the final color.
