Sundeala ‘ eco’ noticeboards Sundeala offer a truly unique approach to notice boards. The company, established in 1898, was the first in the world to manufacture sheet materials, the forerunner of all other homogenous and composite boards such as MDF, chipboard and plywood. Old newspapers are pulped in the 24 hour production facility that produces in excess of 0.3 million boards per annum. That’s the equivalent of processing approx 110 million newspapers or 4000 tons of post consumer waste each year. As each ton represents 3 cubic metres in volume that equates to a saving of nearly 1200 cubic metres of landfill a year!

Addition of frames
Uniquely eco-nomical! Sundeala boards are supplied with a sanded pre-finished ‘nap’, so no fabric covering is required. The standard Sundeala ‘K’ Quality has a natural light grey colour and can be supplied square or bevelled edge. To extend the selection ‘K’ Colourboard is also available offering 8 contrasting colours of Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Charcoal, Wheat, Lilac and Yellow. All boards offer a 25 year warranty.
Extending your choice! Frames, either aluminium or wood can be added to your choice of notice board. Frames offer a touch of class and speed of installation...see our Executive and Harlequin frame pages for a touch of glamour too!

Fabric covered boards Practical covering for versatile use! Utilising the Sundeala base board, fabrics are added to offer the greatest possible choice of colour and texture. All fabrics are firmly wrapped around the edge of the un-framed boards and stapled on the reverse.

Sundeala ‘ K’ Colourboard
Sharing all the performance benefits of natural light grey Sundeala ‘K’, Colourboard is integrally dyed using non-toxic mineral pigments. The advantage of having a colour saturated throughout the board is evident when accidents occur. Any scuffs or unwanted marks can be sanded off leaving a clean, fresh, revitalised colour on display. Eight colours are offered, Blue, Lilac, Red, Yellow, Green, Wheat, Charcoal and Orange. All Sundeala ‘K’ boards are 9mm thick.
Fixing and conditioning The high cellulose content of Sundeala requires the board to be conditioned before application. To ensure the board performs to its optimum potential it is important to only install in dry, fully commissioned buildings ensuring the recommended fixing method is used. What’ s the flaming difference?
What the Building Regulations say
The fire performance requirement of Building Regulations Approved Document B – Internal Fire Spread (linings) is to inhibit the spread of fire within the building. In this respect the new European Harmonised test standards BS EN 13823: 2002 and BS EN 11925-2 replace British Standard BS 476: Parts 6 & 7. Below is the European classification alongside the old British Standard class, together with their uses within the Building Regulations.

Sundeala FRB board has been tested under the European Harmonised Standards BS EN 13823: 2002 and BS EN 11925-2 and fully meets the criteria for Class B. Sundeala FRB may therefore be used in locations that previously required British Standard and Building Regulation classifications of Class 1 and Class ‘O’. As a general guide Class B products should be used in fire escape routes, corridors, stairways, lobbies, kitchens, workshops, laboratories etc. If in doubt your local Fire Officer can advise on their correct use. Please be aware design principles vary according to building type and between regulatory bodies. School design is greatly influenced by Document BB100 “Designing and managing against the risk of fire in schools” where the use of notice boards with a cover (our Securi-boards) should be used in non protected escape routes. Fabric covered notice boards It is vital, if a fabric covered flame retardant notice board is required, that both the base board and the fabric covering meet the relevant test requirements. Fire Officers are aware of performance criteria and will not accept products without a composite fire test certificate. Sundeala carried out a series of tests under the new European standards and the results are evident from the photographs adjacent. It must be noted the primary source of flame, which is gas generated, remains constant throughout the duration of the test. Both tests used an identical flame retardant fabric. The only difference between the two is the choice of base board, one utilising Sundeala FRB, and the other a standard, non flame retardant product. All fabric covered Class B notice boards produced by Sundeala are supplied with the appropriate material over an FRB board.

No fabric covering required All Sundeala uncovered notice boards are pre-sanded offering a soft velvety surface texture. Indeed our range of Sundeala ‘K’ Colourboards offer 8 distinct colours to further reduce the need for fabric covering. Un-covered boards are easy to maintain. Any unwanted marks or scuffs can be removed with sand paper, offering many years of serviceable life. For the executive look, a more substantial 44 x 25 mm frame is available – see page 20 for more details.
Fixing and conditioning The high cellulose content of Sundeala requires the board to be conditioned before application. To ensure the board performs to its optimum potential it is important to only install in dry, fully commissioned buildings ensuring the recommended fixing method is used. Sharing all the performance benefits of natural light grey Sundeala ‘K’, Colourboard is integrally dyed using non-toxic mineral pigments. The advantage of having colour saturated throughout the board is evident when accidents occur. Any scuffs or unwanted marks can be sanded off leaving a clean, fresh, revitalised colour on display. Eight colours are offered, Blue, Lilac, Red, Yellow, Green, Wheat, Charcoal and Orange. All Sundeala ‘K’ boards are 9mm thick.

Environment
These have a flat profile with a simple mitred corner and are lacquer finished.
Sundeala only purchase wood frames from suppliers who follow a strict FSC policy. All wood is sourced from managed forests and has a custody certificate to prove its origination.
Fixings Fixings for wood frames are supplied. These are simple mirror plates that should be fixed at no more than 900mm centres.

Indeed our range of Sundeala ‘K’ Colourboards offer 8 distinct colours to further reduce the need for fabric covering. Uncovered boards are easy to maintain. Any unwanted marks or scuffs can be removed with sandpaper, offering many years of serviceable life.
Nine colours are offered, Blue, Lilac, Red, Yellow, Green, Wheat, Charcoal, Orange and Light Grey. All Sundeala ‘K’ boards are approx 9mm thick.

Versatile notice boards to suit your needs Duo board/Trio board Manufactured as a 50%/50% board with dry wipe one side and Sundeala pin boards on the other. Ideal for areas of limited space where the best of both worlds can be accommodated. The pin board side can be covered in a fabric if required. A felt cloth in four colours is offered as standard, however any fabric style of your choice can be priced by our sales office.
Header/post-it boards Similar to the duo board, a combination of a pin board with a reduced area of dry wipe either used at the top or bottom of the panel can be manufactured. These boards can offer multi-use in areas of restricted space.

Covered Securiboards for internal use Sizes and prices (£) Sundeala Securi-boards are manufactured from standard profile aluminium frames with PET recycled translucent panels. The glazing is shatterproof offering excellent protection to the displays. The backing boards can be supplied as Sundeala ‘K’ or ‘K’ Colourboard. FRB versions are also available if required. There is also a wide variety of fabric styles and colours to choose from. The standard fabric is felt in a choice of four colours.
External boards For external security of notices a fully waterproof Securi-board is offered. Made from steel with a grey powder coat enamel finish, the board is sturdy and secure.

General fire recommendations It must be observed that education establishments along with other institutional buildings have a duty of care under the ‘Buildings and Fire Precautions Legislation’ together with other buildings under the ‘Health and Safety at Work Act’ and therefore must meet specific standards relating to means of escape in the event of fire. Open notice boards that have a substantial amount of paper attached could significantly reduce the protection provided by fire resistant materials and compartmentation generally used in construction as defined in the Building Regulations and subsequent Approved Documents.
It is recommended therefore that no open type notice boards be used in dead end corridors, protected stairways and lobbies to protected stairways. It is also advised that corridors with alternative means of escape and atrium areas should not have on display more than 20% of the total ceiling and wall surface area. Securi-notice boards should also be used in these situations, reducing the concern and need to calculate the area of exposed display.

Reverberation and sound absorption Sound absorption products are installed in rooms to improve acoustic quality. Acousti-form is used to reduce the affect of unwanted noise reverbaration. All new school buildings are controlled under the requirements of the Building Regulations. How to condition and fix Sundeala boards Why condition Sundeala boards? Sundeala Medium Boards are manufactured from recycled newsprint (cellulose fibre). A feature of this natural material is its ability to adjust its moisture content to match that of the environment. Therefore, if the moisture content of the board is lower than the surrounding air, it will absorb moisture and slightly increase in size. By ensuring that the board has a moisture content similar to its surroundings before fixing, this tendancy is avoided. Once installed the product is generally in a stable environment and any such changes should be minimal. The following guidelines will help you condition your Sundeala boards to achieve equilibrium of moisture content before fixing. Note: Please do not fix Sundeala boards if you consider them to be faulty or damaged in any way. It is recommended that boards should only be fixed in buildings that are fully commissioned.
Conditioning with water
(unheated buildings)
With a brush or clean mop, rub clean water into the back of the boards at a rate of at least one litre per 1220 x 2440mm. Moisture penetration can be greatly assisted by adding a few drops of washing up liquid to the water. Then lay wet side to wet side in a neat fully supported stack and allow to stand for 48-72 hours.
Working with Sundeala
Do unwrap, unstack 48 hours prior to installing boards. Do store boards in the dry on a level base clear of the ground. Do make sure boards are properly conditioned as recommended. Do ensure all substrates or fixing grounds are level and clean. Do use appropriate type of fasteners and cup washers. Do fix boards at recommended centres. Do not use adhesives without checking their suitability. Do not force boards together, joints should be lightly butted. Do not use paint types which may adversely affect the flame resistance of the board.

Alternatively Sundeala board may be conditioned dry. Stand boards vertically on their long edges in the room in which they are to be installed to allow them to reach a moisture content which is in balance with their surroundings. Any packaging should be removed to allow for correct conditioning.
Arrange boards loosely with separators and stand for a minimum of 3 days

Fixing
To timber grounds or framework
Sundeala boards should be fixed to a smooth. level surface. Screws should be positioned at maximum 600mm centres through the field of the board and at 300-450mm centres around perimeters. Cup washers with screws are recommended.
Screw fix as previously recommended or pin fix as follows:

• Timber battens (min 38mm x 25mm) should be fixed to the substrate at maximum vertical centres of 450mm. • Cross noggings should be installed horizontally at maximum 1200mm centres. The board must be fully supported on all edges. • Fix board to the supporting structure with rust resistant/non corroding lost head panel pins of sufficient length to penetrate the timber by 19mm. • Panel pins should be installed at 300mm centres in the field of the board and at 150mm centres at perimeters. * All perimeter fixings should be 8mm in from board edge.

Fixing with adhesives Although mechanical fixings are preferred, boards may be fixed to sound backgrounds with adhesives. There is a wide range available, however, in all cases the recommendations and guidance of the adhesive manufacturers should be followed.
Start fixing from one edge of sheet and work across. Do not fix corners first and then centres and this will build in a tendency towards bulging. With the second sheet start at edge adjacent to first sheet. Nails at edges of adjacent sheets should be 'paired' not staggered. Boards should be lightly
butted leaving a 5mm gap

Fine glass paper can be used to remove finger marks from the surface and for general cleaning.
Storage Boards should be stored in the dry on a flat and level base.
