Redondant battery charger, master-slave, MA2 Series The MA2 Series battery chargers have been designed to provide a most reliable power source for battery and connected loads! Inspired by more than 30 years of expertise in the power source domain, the MA2 charger design integrates proven and rugged technologies and, still, offers an adaptable solution to actual requirements for evolution and security in electric power plants . Equipped with advanced remotecontrol functions, the MA2 charger minimizes the costs related to battery maintenance without endangering the installation reliability! Life span of more than 30 years Optimal battery charging Ultra heavy duty Proven technology (thyristors) Battery monitoring and automatic testing (lower maintenance) 125 Vdc output voltage Embebbed WEB Server (24V, 48V, 110V, 220V and 250V also available) Master-slave architecture DNP3 communication protocole Secured access Customer support from large team of engineers and technicians MA2 Series MA SERIES EVOLUES… HERE IS MA2 SERIES! The MA2 charger is the logical advancement of the legendary MA charger. The MA2 fulfills the telemetry needs for remote-controlling the battery chargers. Also, it comprises many new functions allowing, among others, battery monitoring in order to optimize its maintenance. On longer terms, the monitoring of many batteries, and related chargers, allows for creating a performance history over many years for an entire battery bank and for predicting one battery life span. Here are some of these new functions: • • Battery remote-maintenance. • • Battery automatic testing. Multiple measurement, alarm and readings monitoring such as: battery current, battery float current, ambient temperature in battery room, battery temperature, etc. Two (2) Ethernet communication ports allowing communication with the charger using DNP3 Protocol or embedded Web server. Additional benefits: • • • • • • • Reduces site maintenance through remote maintenance. Minimizes engineering related costs: no more numerous alarm contact connections. Eliminates the addition of many 4-20mA sensors for analog signal transmission (voltages, currents, etc.) in some projects. Optimizes battery life span. Battery monitoring and automatic testing. Fully configurable through WEB interface: no external tool. Facilitates compliance with NERC PRC-005-2 (protection system maintenance). Reliable, evolutional and powerful charger adapted to power industry requirements! Converting an MA charger to an MA2 charger Take advantage of the MA2 charger by converting your MA charger. An easy installation conversion kit is available. DATA COMMUNICATION Recover data, built battery performance history! The charger handles communication through DNP3 Protocol (level 2). Any of the two (2) charger Ethernet ports (optical or wire) can make the connection. With this connection, the MA2 charger can transfer all measurements, alarms and readings to a processing or monitoring center. Remote control of the charger is also possible through this connection (master-slave selection, voltage switching, battery test, etc.). By saving charger-transmitted data history, the processing center will be able to analyze long-term battery and charger performance. DATA WEB ACCES Make your job easier by accessing the charger Web server! Using a commercial WEB browser, you can access various information pages on the MA2 charger, such as: • • • • • A control panel showing the charger real time status. The actual operating parameters on the charger. The detected measurements, alarms and readings. Recovery means for data history saved by the charger. Maintenance data allowing software updating. Battery test: voltage and current plots BATTERY FLOAT CURRENT MONITORING Reduce your battery maintenance frequency! The battery junction box (BJ BATT) is optional. This junction box is equipped with a current sensor to measure the float current (Ibat_float) required by a fully charged battery. The float current intensity is very low (few milliamps) and keeps the battery at full charge. • • A float current increase means a battery status change that may be related to battery ageing. In such a case, the charger triggers a « High float current » alarm. A null value of this current means an open battery cell or connection. In this case, the charger triggers a « Low float current » alarm. The BJ BATT junction box can signal a battery abnormal condition to the maintenance personal. Then, the storage battery bank shall be tested according to maintenance procedures set by the battery manufacturer. Battery junction box (BJ BATT) The float current monitoring allows for lowering maintenance frequency in accordance with NERC PRC-005-2 maintenance criteria for protection system maintenance. Measure battery temperature and increase its life span! Also, the BJ BATT junction box is equipped with 3 temperature sensors measuring the temperature of 2 battery cells and around the battery. When the set parameters are exceeded, the charger triggers alarms showing « High battery temperature » and « High ambient temperature ». By this battery temperature monitoring, it is possible to control the storage battery operating environment and optimize their life span. BATTERY JUNCTION BOX WIRING DIAGRAM FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS A RELIABLE POWER SUPPLY SOLUTION Through a master-slave redundant architecture, the MA2 chargers ensure great supply reliability. The series MA2 systems consist of two (2) battery chargers: one master and one slave. Normally, the master charger powers the load. If the master Vac charger fails, then the load is automatically transferred to the backup (slave) charger. It is possible to manually assign the master role to either one of the chargers. Also, it is possible to configure a periodical switchover of the charger operating cycle in order to ensure even wearing and checking their good operational state. Note that one counter shows the number of months each charger has powered the load. It is possible to adapt an MA charger by integrating the various MA2 functions. This MA2 upgrading can be done on site by client technical team thus minimizing equipment unavailability. The basic upgrading requires only the replacement of the control module. This module is entirely compatible with existing MA module (physically and electrically). The upgrading is thus a very easy task. In order to use all MA2 functions, IE (Interface elements), BJ (Junction box BJ BATT), and VAC (VAC input voltage reading) options are required.
