This course introduces students to the Greek script and provides the fundamental grammar and vocabulary of the Attic dialect, used by such famous writers as Thucydides, Sophocles, and Plato. This course provides an overview of grammar taught in the beginners-level course, follow-on treatment of grammar, and some guided readings. Biblical and Patristic Greek Tutors Biblical and Patristic Greek : Intermediate Suitable for students with 2 units of university-level Classical or Koine Greek or equivalent (contact [email protected] if you require further advice). This course will include treatment of advanced grammatical concepts integrated with guided reading of a selection of Biblical and Patristic texts written in the Koine dialect. Alice Baker Text: Athanasius, Life of Saint Anthony and a selection of complementary passages from the New Testament. Texts will be made available to enrolled students one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Week. Seumas Macdonald Ancient Egyptian Tutors Ancient Egyptian : Beginners Suitable for students with no experience of the language. This course will introduce students to the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script, and will explore the fundamentals of Middle Egyptian grammar and vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to read short hieroglyphic inscriptions on monuments and artefacts, including stelae, funerary cones and coffins from a range of periods of Egyptian history. Ancient Egyptian : Experienced Beginners Suitable for students who have completed the beginners-level course or 1 unit of university-level Ancient Egyptian or equivalent (contact [email protected] if you require further advice). This course continues the exploration of Middle Egyptian script, grammar, and vocabulary, including complementary readings from the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. Some of the texts and readings which will be studied are stelae, false door, funerary, tales and royal and non-royal inscriptions. The course also features a Hieratic workshop, conducted by Emma Magro and suitable for new and continuing Hieratic students. This course introduces students to the Ancient Hebrew script and fundamental grammar and vocabulary. It also includes sessions translating 2 Kings 20. Anne Porter Text and Textbook: there is no textbook for this course. Learning materials will be made available to enrolled students one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Week. This course continues the exploration of Ancient Hebrew script, grammar, and vocabulary, including complementary readings. Natalie Mylonas Text: The Song of the Sea (Exodus 15: 1–10 and Exodus 14: 16–25) and The Song of Deborah (Judges 5: 24–30 and Judges 4: 17–22). Texts will be made available to enrolled students one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Week. Ancient Hebrew : Advanced Suitable for students with 3–4 units of university-level Ancient Hebrew or equivalent (contact [email protected] if you require further advice). This course provides guided reading of Ancient Hebrew texts. Steven Coxhead Text: Genesis 11–18. Texts will be made available to enrolled students one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Week. Coptic Tutor Coptic : Beginners Suitable for students with no experience of the language. This course explores the fundamentals of the Sahidic dialect of Coptic (the latest form of the ancient Egyptian language) script, grammar, and vocabulary. A session will also be devoted to the Bohairic dialect of Coptic, still used by the modern Coptic church. Sam Cook Textbook: there is no textbook for this course. Learning materials will be made available to enrolled students one month prior to the beginning of the Summer Week. Akkadian Tutor Akkadian : Beginners Suitable for students with no experience of the language. This course will introduce students to the alphabet, grammar, and vocabulary of Akkadian, an ancient semitic language, with a rich literature, including such famous works as the Epic of Gilgamesh. Noel Weeks Textbook: Richard Caplice, Introduction to Akkadian (Rome: Pontifical Biblical Institute, 2002). See below for textbook suppliers. Lunch will not provided by MALS, but food and drinks will be available at a range of outlets on campus throughout the Summer Week. VENUE, ACCOMMODATION AND PARKING CANCELLATION OF CLASSES AND REFUNDS All classes are held on the Macquarie University campus at North Ryde. See campus map on the University website to locate buildings. The University is well served by public transport, including its own train station. Please refer to the public transport trip planner website for bus and train connections. A minimum of five students is required for each class to be formed. Classes with insufficient enrolments by 19 December will be cancelled. Anyone enrolled in a cancelled class will be offered an alternative. For those travelling to Sydney to attend, Robert Menzies College on campus offers special rates for MALS students. Contact RMC directly at [email protected] or phone (02) 9936 60oo. Classes will be finalised on Wednesday 4 January and fees will be processed from this date. Receipts will be provided at registration during the Summer Week. Please note that casual parking within the university grounds is restricted to X3, X4 and W4 car parks. Hourly charges apply and tickets may be purchased from vending machines adjacent to car parks. Pre-paid entry permits to cover the duration of the Summer Week are also available for purchase but must be ordered and paid for at time of application. Classes may be cancelled if there are insufficient student numbers on Wednesday 19 December and applications may not be accepted if classes are full. Early enrolment will ensure you are not disappointed. If you are unable to attend please contact MALS as soon as possible. Full refunds will be issued for those who notify MALS of their inability to attend the school before Wednesday 4 January. No refunds will be issued after that date. TIMETABLE On Monday 9 January we will meet at 9am for registration and the opening of the School, before beginning morning classes at 9.30am. All courses include both a morning and afternoon session. Morning classes generally run from 9am to 12noon, including a half-hour break. There is a break from 12noon until 1pm for lunch and then a special lecture (program to be announced on the first morning) will be offered each day from 1pm to 2pm. Afternoon classes run from 2pm to 5pm, including a half hour break. Registration will be held in the Museum of Ancient Cultures, Building X5B, Level 3. TEXTBOOKS/TEXTS MALS does not supply textbooks that are readily available. The following bookstores generally offer a wide selection of language textbooks.
