MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL and AQUAFINA presents PITCH, HIT AND RUN Competition at the Brea Sports Park on Sunday, May 20 from 11:00am to 3:00pm This event is brought to you locally by Doug Senne, Director of Player Development at 5 Tool Player Academy. PITCH, HIT AND RUN is intended to encourage youth participation and emphasize the “FUN” element of baseball competition. This national skills program provides boys and girls, ages 7-14, the opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting and running abilities. Since there is no registration fee for this program, every boy and girl, ages 7-14, will have a chance to compete in three important aspects of baseball/softball: pitching, hitting, and running. For more information, please visit http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/kids/mlb_pitch_hit_run.jsp. Boys and girls compete separately and advance through all four levels of the competition in separate divisions. The four levels of competition are: Local Level in Brea; Sectional Level in Pico Rivera on Friday, June 1 at 6:30pm; Team Championship hosted at the 30 MLB ballparks (date and time TBA); and National Finals will be held during 2012 MLB All-Star week (July 9-11) at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City, MO.

Event Location: Brea Sports Park, 3333 East Birch Street (Birch St. and Valencia St.). Registration begins at 10:30am. This event is limited to a maximum of 240 participants. Only participants and Competition Officials will be permitted on the fields. Participants are not allowed to wear metal spikes. During the HIT portion of the competition, 1) Baseball and softball bats will be provided. Participants may use their own equipment. If a participant brings his/her own bat, it must be made available to all other participants from the beginning of the competition at 11:00am until the end of the competition at 3:00pm. 2) Helmets will not be provided. All participants must wear a helmet. 3) A running or walking start is not permitted. Participants may take a single stride step, but cannot take multiple steps in attempt to hit the ball.
The PITCH portion of the competition will test how accurately a participant can throw strikes to a designated “Strike Zone” target (17” x 30” banner) from a designated distance. All participants in the boys division will use a standard baseball and pitch from a distance of 45 feet. Participants in the 7-8 and 9-10 girls division will compete with an 11-inch softball while participants in the 11-12 and 13-14 girls division will compete with a 12-inch softball. All participants in the girls division will pitch from a distance of 35 feet. Each participant must start from the pitching rubber or chalk line and deliver each ball to the “Strike Zone” target. Each participant receives six (6) attempts to the designated “Strike Zone”. Any method of underhand/overhand pitching or throwing is accepted.
SCORING: Each attempt hitting any portion of the “Strike Zone” target will be deemed a strike and is worth 75 points. Examples: 1) A participant hits two of six targets = 150 points. 2) A participant hits five of six targets = 375 points. 3) If a participant fails to hit the target in his/her six (6) attempts, a minimum score of 50 points will be awarded. The HIT portion of the competition will test a participant’s ability to hit from a stationary batting tee, along a tape measure from home plate, toward straight-away centerfield. Hits will be measured for distance and accuracy. All participants in the boys division will use a standard baseball. Participants in the 7-8 and 9-10 girls divisions will compete with an 11-inch softball while participants in the 11-12 and 13-14 girls divisions will compete with a 12inch softball. Each participant will be allowed three (3) swings in an attempt to hit the ball. A swing and miss counts as one swing.
SCORING: Total points will be based on the best distance and accuracy of a participant’s three (3) swings. The tape measure will begin measuring 50 feet from home plate. SCORING FORMULA: Distance – inaccuracy + initial 50 feet not measured by the tape measure = total distance x 2 = total points. Examples: 1) A participant’s best hit lands at 74 feet 2 inches (round up to 75), but lands 25 feet to the right of the tape measure. 75 – 25 + 50 = 100 x 2 = 200. The score is 200 points. 2) A participant’s best hit lands at 129 feet 6 inches (round up to 130), but lands 10 feet to the left of the tape measure. 130 – 10 + 50 = 170 x 2 = 340. The score is 340 points. 3) If a participant fails to hit the ball in his/her three (3) attempts or hits the ball less than 50 feet, a minimum score of 50 points will be awarded. The RUN portion of the competition will measure a participant’s speed in a sprint from the start line, touching third base, and touching home plate. All participants in the boys division will start at an indicated start line which is 40 feet beyond second base toward right-centerfield, run 100 feet to third base, and then run 60 feet from third base to home plate for a total of 160 feet. All participants in the girls division will start at second base, run 60 feet to third base, and then run 60 feet from third base to home plate for a total of 120 feet. No sliding is allowed. Each participant will start from a standing start at an indicated start line or second base, take one turn at third base, and finish at home plate. After the Competition Official yells GO!, each participant’s time will begin from the moment he/she moves from the indicated start line or second base and will stop when he/she touches home plate. The participant must touch third base and home plate for the time to be official. Each participant is allowed one (1) false start.
SCORING: Starting at 50 points, an additional point is added for every hundredth of a second under 11.00 seconds for the boys division and under 10.00 seconds for the girls division. SCORING FORMULA: Base Time – participant’s time + initial 50 points = total points. Examples: 1) A boy participant has a time of 8.00 seconds. 1100 – 800 + 50 = 350 points. 2) A girl participant has a time of 7.50. 1000 – 750 + 50 = 300 points. 3) If a participant misses a base, has two (2) false starts, slides into home plate, has a time of more than 11.00 seconds in the boys division or more than 10.00 seconds in the girls division, a minimum score of 50 points will be awarded.
