Manager’s duties
Purpose of the role: To communicate competition information to the team on behalf of the coach and the club and to ensure that the team follows the rules on game day. Before the competition starts
Advise the team of training details. Ensure players know to bring a bottle of water and a hat to training.
Once the fixtures are published in March on www.ernanetball.com.au OR www.stgerardsnc.nsw.netball.com.au, advise your team of the game times and dates. They will also be published in the ERNA fixtures book, which Managers can pick up at the pre-season Club General Meeting.
The ERNA fixtures book is important to consult as it contains information about late registrations, forfeiting and uniform rules. It’s a good idea to keep it in your team kit bag.
The ERNA website, and the fixtures book, will also contain the layouts of the courts, wet weather information and the rules for modified games (7-9). It’s a good idea to email your team with these details.
Ask the parents of each player in your team to complete and return to you a Player Medical Form. These should be with the team at every training session, gala days and all games. The team kit may be a good place to keep them – perhaps in a plastic sleeve or folder.
Along with your fixtures book and medical forms, your kit bag should contain first aid supplies, team patches, and if you are playing competition games (10 or over), your team photo books. For more information about photo books, see competition games below.
Remind children to bring a water bottle each week, cut their fingernails and remove jewellery. Organise to bring a basket, or other means to stack bottles in at the games.
Encourage your team to give ample warning of their absences where possible.
Throughout the season
You will need to organize Table Duty and/or Canteen Duty for your team on one Saturday only. You will be given a time slot and will need to provide enough parents to cover this.
Pass on information to your team as requested by any member of the Club Executive.
Before the game
If your team must forfeit, contact the Club Secretary as soon as possible and with at least 3 hours notice.
In the case of a forfeit by an opponent, the Club Secretary will advise the team Manager so players can be duly notified.
In the case of wet weather, do not assume games are cancelled. You can check the ERNA website or wet weather number on 1900 962 017.
Inform your team if a game is cancelled, making sure every team member is aware of the situation (usually a text is enough, but make sure you ask for a reply for confirmation).
On game day
If your team plays in the first time slot of the day at either Brush Farm or Meadowbank, you may need to collect the post pads from the shed and attach to the goals. A game cannot start without the goal pads in place. The team on the fixtures sheet that is listed first (ie on the left hand side) is responsible for getting the goal pads, so you should check the Fixtures Book to see when it is your turn.
Manager’s duties
On arrival at the courts, go to Control to collect the score sheet. If the other team has already collected it, make sure you get it with ample time to check the list of team names. Cross off the name of any player you are sure will not be taking the court that day.
See below for the different scoring and competition arrangements for modified and competition games.
Check that players have short, rounded nails and NO jewellery before they take the court. Always have scissors, hair elastics and bobby pins in the kit. Check that all girls have their hair tied back.
Regularly check First Aid kit and replace used items.
If there are any problems during a game you must go to the Control room straight away while the game is in progress. After the game is too late.
Blood rule – no player is allowed on the court if bleeding. The player must be patched. No contaminated clothing is to be worn. (A change of clothes is handy in the team kit bag). Assist coach with putting on patches. Collect all balls and patches at the end of the game.
Encourage good sportsmanship on the court. Encourage players to thank the umpires and the opposition after the game.
Scoresheet rules - modified teams only (7 - 9 years)
The players’ names will be listed on the game sheet. You will need to write in the positions that the girls will be playing in. This should be given to you by the coach before the game, or preferably at the training session during the week prior to the game.
For the Under 9’s teams – halfway through the season you have to start scoring the games. You will be notified when this will happen and you will need to score for the whole game with a parent from the other team. Final scores need to be marked down. See information below about scoring.
Scoresheet rules - competition teams only (10 years and up)
Score the game, or choose a reliable person to do it for the team. Make sure you stand at the side of the court in line with the centre circle of the court with the other team’s scorer for the whole game, and score half the game each. When the other team is scoring check that they have marked each goal – pleasantly! The score sheet is the only official record of the game. It is returned to Control at the end of the game by the winning team. If the two scorers do not stand together, you cannot make any complaint against the other team if you disagree with the result at the end of the game. Make sure that the captain, umpire and scorer sign the sheet at the end of the game. Check opposing team registration cards before the game (from the photo book). If a team does not have its registration cards before the game commences, an automatic forfeit will be awarded to the opposing team. If borrowing a player from another team, organise to have their blue photo card for the game. The score sheet should be filled in with the team number and grade from which she has been borrowed. Remember players can only play a maximum of 2 games for a higher team, any more and she will not be allowed to play for her original team again. As a courtesy, please inform the borrowed player's coach or manager that she is playing for your team. Go to www.stgerardsnc.nsw.netball.com.au for the game results. It is great to see how your team is going and good to double check they have entered the correct score.
After the game - Write a match report and submit it to the Publicity Officer by email (all primary aged teams). You may wish to do a roster for this so that every child has a turn at writing the match report.
