February 6, 2014 IN1508 TECH NOTES
Firmware Loader v3.0 – Firmware Loader v3.0 or higher is required to load new firmware. The utility is available on Extron’s website in the Download Center. Firmware Upload Instructions – Prior to loading new firmware into an IN1508, a unit power-cycle is strongly recommended. The user must connect to the IN1508 with an RS-232 cable, open Firmware Loader v3.0 or higher and the software will provide the user with instructions detailing the steps needed to upload new firmware. Firmware Upload Time – It typically takes 7-8 minutes to load firmware into the unit once the actual upload process begins. DVI inputs show a line of video artifacts at the top/bottom of image – IN1508 units that shipped prior to January 2007 may show a line of video artifacts at the bottom and/or top of DVI inputs. To resolve this issue, disable Auto DVI by sending “0*76#” via SIS command, and manually adjust Active Pixels, Active Lines, and H/V Start on the DVI input. These manual settings will be recalled after each power cycle. KNOWN ISSUES The following is a list of known firmware issues found in Firmware Version 2.35. No known issues

Released Version: 2.31 Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.30 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to Q4 2010 The following is a list of changes and fixes in this release.
Added “1080p CVT” output rate – Some new 1080p displays will only accept “CVT Reduced Blanking” 1920x1080 / 60Hz timings via their RGBHV inputs. This rate is characterized with a 138.5MHz Pixel Clock, 66.587kHz Horizontal Scan Rate, and a 59.934Hz Vertical Refresh Rate. This output rate can only be selected via SIS command by sending “23*2=”.
Added “Film Mode” setting for low-res inputs – Previous builds of IN1508 firmware permanently enabled Film Mode for inputs 1-4 and input 5 if it was set for YUVi. Occasionally sources such as video cameras can output a signal that will be mis-detected as film-based content, which caused the IN1508 to apply a 3:2 pull-down. For content that was mastered at 59.94Hz this caused video artifacts such as “jaggies.” Film Mode can now be manually disabled per input by using the “18#” SIS command; the default setting remains ON for all inputs.
Added Executive Mode 2 – A new total front panel lockout, Executive Mode 2, is now available by sending “2X” via SIS command. Executive Mode 2 can only be enabled “2X” or disabled “0X” through SIS command.
Added “Auto” mode for EDID emulation on the DVI input 8 – The new default setting for EDID emulation on the DVI input 8 is to match the current output resolution. Discrete rates can still be set using the existing “41#” SIS command; refer to the SIS section in the manual for further information.
Corrected several minor issues with EDID emulation – The tables used for EDID emulation on DVI input 8 have been updated to more closely match newer Extron standards. These updates also fix color/saturation issues with some Mac sources, and also eliminate an input detection issue with 1366x768 sources.
Updated logic to prevent sluggish operation with 24Hz inputs – With 24Hz inputs applied, such as 1080p 24Hz, the IN1508 would be slow to respond to front panel, IR, and SIS commands.
Removed legacy SXGA+1 1400x1050 input resolution – When the IN1508 was set for a 1400x1050 output resolution, 1280x1024 inputs would be misdetected as 1400x1050. This was intentional to accommodate legacy SXGA+1 sources, which are no longer common. If such a legacy 1400x1050 source is to be used, the input can still be setup manually by using the following Advanced Input Configuration settings: Total Pixels: 1066, Active Pixels: 1400, and Active Lines: 1050. Finally, manually adjust H/V Start to center the input; these settings will be recalled after each power cycle.

Released Version: 2.31 Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.30 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to Q4 2010 The following is a list of changes and fixes in this release.
Adjusted YUV input sync detection levels to prevent tearing – Some DVD and Blu-ray players have component black levels that greatly exceed their established blanking level. These negative going video excursions could cause the IN1508 to detect extraneous H Sync pulses, resulting in video tearing. The sync detection levels have been adjusted to accommodate such YUV sources.
Corrected logic used with the ZOOM command – Previously, all low resolutions inputs shared a common ZOOM setting; additionally, ZOOM settings may be lost if a signal was disconnected and reconnected, or if power was lost.
Corrected SMPTE output rates for “older” IN1508 units – IN1508 units that shipped prior to January 2007 did not use ideal timings for SMPTE output resolutions (480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p). These rates have been updated to more closely match the SMPTE specifications.

Released Version: 2.30 Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.25 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to 6/5/2009 The following is a list of changes and fixes in this release.
Added internal test patterns – IN1508 units that shipped after January 2007 now have selectable test patterns, which are available under the Advanced Menu. These patterns can also be accessed via SIS commands: Alternating Pixel = 1j, White Field = 2j, and Crop pattern = 3j. Test pattern support is hardware dependent. A firmware updated unit without appropriate hardware will show the Test Pattern menu option, but it will not be selectable. Also, SIS attempts to access these functions will yield an “E14” error response.
Added Auto Image to Inputs 6 and 7 – Auto Image can be activated by pressing the corresponding front panel button of the selected input for approximately three seconds. This feature can also be activated by issuing the “A” SIS command while on the selected input. Auto Image will reset the Size and Position controls to default values, then automatically set Horizontal and Vertical Start values to ensure the image fills the screen.
Added 1080p / 24Hz input rate detection to DVI Input 8 – DVI Input 8 will now accept 1080p / 24Hz inputs.
Added 1920x1080 PC input rate detection to Inputs 6 and 7 – 1920x1080 PC inputs are now accepted on IN1508 inputs 6 and 7.
Added 59.94Hz refresh rate for SMPTE output rates – SMPTE output rates including 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p now have an additional 59.94Hz refresh rate option that provides increased compatibility. The 59.94Hz refresh rate is listed as “59” in the IN1508’s on screen menu.
Added 1080p “Sharp” output rate – Some Sharp Professional Displays would not accept the SMPTE 1080p rate from the IN1508; a custom 1080p Sharp output rate has been added for compatibility with these displays. This output rate is only available via SIS by sending “21*2=”.
Added 1920x1200 output rate – 1920x1200 is a popular rate that has been heavily requested; it has been added, but is available only via SIS by sending “22*2=”.
Updated 1280x768 output timings – The 1280x768 output rate timings have been updated to match the CVT specified timings used by most display devices.
Fixed Horizontal Position offset issue – A single pixel offset was noticed within the image upon returning to an input after another input selection had been made.

Released Version: 2.30 - Continued Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.25 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to 6/5/2009
Fixed breakaway mode image loss issue - If a specific sequence of audio and video breakaway commands were sent to the IN1508, no video would be present at the output until the user switched to another input and back again.
Fixed Front Panel Security Lockout audio breakaway issue – When executive mode was active, audio breakaway SIS commands would return an error.
Updated output timings for tri-level outputs – The 720p, 1080i, and 1080p YUV output rates have been updated to match SMPTE specifications.
Enhanced compatibility for non-standard DVI inputs – DVI sources with non-standard DVI video output, such as some document cameras, would cause a corrupted output on the IN1508.
Fixed OSD menu reset issue – The “RESET” option under the Advanced OSD menu would not set all device settings back to their default value.

Released Version: 2.24 Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.12 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to February 2008 The following is a list of changes and fixes in this release.
Fixed serial command input stack overflow issue - Rapid succession of SIS commands could overfill the stack leading to dropped commands.
Fixed Input 5 audio mute issue – when selecting a new input type on Input 5 (Interlaced, Progressive, HDTV), the audio output of the IN1508 would mute.
Fixed 1280x1024 input detection – The IN1508 would detect 1280x1024 inputs incorrectly if the source’s pixel clock was slow. The recognized clock range has been expanded to accommodate varying clock rates.
Fixed PIP window swapping problem – Information in PIP windows unexpectedly swapped upon issuance of a disable command through SIS.
Fixed command processing when set for 1080i output - SIS and IR commands were not processed when the IN1508 was configured for a 1080i output rate.
Enhanced 480p input performance on Input 5 – Improper display of 480p signals on Input 5 was noticed during the first minute of operation.
Enhanced 1080i input signal processing – The sampling of incoming 1080i signals has been updated to further minimize “jaggies” in the output image.
Updated 720p, 1080i, and 1080p timing – 720p, 1080i, and 1080p RGB and YUV output timings have been updated to more closely adhere to published SMPTE standards.
Corrected default aspect ratio for 1280x768 output rate – The 1280x768 output rate was incorrectly stored as a 4:3 rate, which led to incorrect window sizing when adjusting the Aspect Ratio control. 1280x768 is now stored as a 16:9 output rate, so setting the Input Aspect Ratio to 16:9 will now fill the screen and a setting of 4:3 will yield “pillar box.”
Corrected YUV HDTV output levels – YUV HDTV output rates (720p, 1080i, and 1080p) had a purple offset that was noticeable on some displays.
Added support for new input resolutions - Four rates have been added to the input lookup table: 1440x900, 1280x800, 1280x768, and 1680x1050 (reduced blanking only).

Released Version: 2.24 - Continued Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.12 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to February 2008
Added IR disable feature – This feature allows the disabling of the front panel IR receiver. It is useful in areas experiencing interference issues with stray IR signals. The default setting for this feature is OFF, but it can be enabled by the “65#” SIS command.
Added “Video Breakaway” feature - Added “Video Breakaway” feature similar to that found on the DVS 304. Video only inputs can be selected by using the “&” command via SIS - Simple Instruction Set.
Added selectable EDID Emulation for DVI inputs – EDID emulation for DVI inputs can now be selected via SIS command. The default resolution is set to 1024x768, but additional rates are available and can be selected using the “41#” SIS command.
Added new output rates – New output rates include: 1440x900 (60Hz and 75Hz), 1680x1050 (60Hz), 1280x800 (50Hz and 60Hz), and 852x480 (50Hz and 60Hz). These rates can be found after 1080p in the output resolution list.
Added DVI auto-detect feature for Input 8 – Input centering adjustments were previously required when Input 8, DVI input, was selected. The auto-detect feature has been added, providing automatic sizing and centering of the input image. The default setting is “ON”, but can be disabled using the “76#” SIS command.

Released Version: 2.12 Affects: Firmware Revision: 2.08 or earlier Date(s): Units shipped prior to April 2, 2007 The following is a list of changes and fixes in this release.
Fixed incorrect display of 4:3 inputs with 16:9 output rates – 4:3 inputs were displayed out of proportion when 16:9 output rates were selected.
Fixed PIP SIS logic issue – The IN1508 reacted differently to commands issued via SIS and front panel.
Fixed video un-mute issue – Muted video inputs would un-mute when active video sources were applied to other inputs.
Fixed unstable image output issue - Incoming signals with 1280x1024 resolution, or higher, occasionally experienced excessive jitter on output image.
Fixed YUV output color space – YUV output lacked yellow, due to an incorrect color space conversion setting.
Fixed incorrect SIS response prompt - If the unit had been reset after the last power-cycle, the Firmware Loader incorrectly prompted the need for an internal jumper setting.
Increased 1400x1050 input sampling ranges – 1680x1050 timing parameters are similar to the 1400x1050 timings, and cannot be differentiated. The 1400x1050 sampling ranges have been increased, allowing the user to manually adjust the timings to properly display the input resolution.
Modified 1400x1050 at 60Hz output rate to best match VESA CVT specification
Added 1920x1200 reduced blanking timings to input lookup tables

Fixed SIS command response for active pixels – Unit will provide correct response for the active pixel setting while in PIP mode.
Fixed tint value – With no input connected the tint value will read 0.
Added audio breakaway feature – Audio breakaway is now available via SIS commands.
Adjusted 1400x1050 output rate to match the VESA CVT specification – The previous version of 1400x1050 was often mistaken as 1280x1024 by many display devices. The new rate follows the Coordinated Video Timings (CVT) specification and is better recognized by newer generation displays.
Modified input detection for 1280x1024 and 1400x1050 – When set to a 1400x1050 output rate, the IN1508 will sample incoming 1280x1024 and 1400x1050 rates both as 1400x1050. If the output rate is set to something other than 1400x1050, the IN1508 will sample these incoming rates at 1280x1024.
