Many Voices, Different Language Becoming Duty Bearers – Showcasing an educator action research project on implementing children’s rights Alistair Gibbs, Emma Lake, Lisa Stowers, Kylie Grey and Catharine Hydon In a world where a right has many stakeholders, who takes precedence? Where is the child’s voice? ‘Controversial’ Interests and Resources Family relationships and cultural beliefs versus child’s interests versus educator knowledge. What happened…The Children’s Rights Bag • We researched articles and selected 6 areas of Children’s Rights with the children • Education, Freedom, Safety, Be With Your Family, Play, Opinion • Each child was put into a group of one the 6 rights • Each child created a visual image based on their given right and make a bold statement about it • The Children’s Right Bag symbolise the importance of right s being protected + upheld for all children around the world Curriculum Decisions Capture the voice of each stakeholder • Thought bubbles on each Right area Consultation with Children • What do we need to survive – this is the foundation of a right. • Separate Needs from Wants What Did We learn? • Where we thought there would be division there was actually a commonality. • Children are more aware of their rights than we give them credit. • We all fundamentally share the same views on children’s rights however we describe it using different language that is comfortable to the individuality of the person. • We need to show up differently As an Educator I learnt The Result Where To From Here? Introducing the framework to our other centres • Reflective tool • Embedding it into everyday practice to reflect, • Evolving current practices Questioning what could be looked at differently remembering that all the voices count • • How is it embedded • Reflective tool • Compliments existing program • Tool to support difficult conversations • Constant opportunities for it to evolve.
