To prevent odors, mix food waste with yard waste. Add one layer of yard waste, newspaper or shredded paper to the bottom of your green cart before adding food waste. Food waste can also be put into paper grocery bags to help contain odors. When does my green cart get picked up? Marin Sanitary collects carts weekly. Place your cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on your designated pickup day. Visit the Marin Sanitary website for more information. Can I use BioBags? Yes. Compostable bags that clearly meet ASTM D6400 standards and have the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and the U.S. Composting Council (USCC) logos can be put in your green compost cart. What does my compost become? Food scraps, yard waste, and food-soiled paper become Marin’s Own, a rich and nutritious affordable soil that you can purchase from American Soil in San Rafael.

What do I do with expired medication? Do not flush medicine down the toilet. Dispose of outdated prescription medicine and pharmaceuticals at a pharmacy or police station that accepts these items.

SMART PURCHASING What other steps can I take to reduce the amount of waste I produce? Consider purchasing reusable, rechargeable, recyclable and/or compostable goods. Questions to consider when purchasing products: • Is it non-hazardous or less hazardous than other choices? • Is it reusable, durable or easily repaired? • Is it made from recycled materials? • Does it conserve energy or water? • Is it refillable or available in bulk quantity to reduce packaging? • Does it need special disposal? • Will the manufacturer take it back?
There is a 60 lb. weight limit per cart; extra weight may be subject to a special pickup charge. How do I dispose of excess trash? Call Marin Sanitary at (415) 456-2601 for quotes on extra trash.
TOXICS AND HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE How do I dispose of household hazardous waste? Marin County residents can drop-off household hazardous waste at the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility, Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. You must bring proof of residency. Which HHW items does my hauler accept? • Latex and oil-based paint • All electronic waste • Lead products • Bleach containers • Computers and monitors • Motor oil • Oil filters • Fertilizers • Fluorescent light bulbs • Pool chemicals • Printers under 4’ in length • Propane • Fuels • Televisions • Garden sprays • Household batteries (not car batteries)
