Mr Michael Ireland Events for the week This week the SRC organised a World’s Greatest Shave event for Thursday last week to help raise funds for leukaemia research. A number of students and staff volunteered to either have their heads shaved or to wax their legs for this great cause. Approximately $1000 was raised as a result of the fundraising event. Then on the weekend I was fortunate enough to par cipate in Relay for Life where students and staff volunteered their me to help raise money for cancer research. Both of these events are examples of how our students are able to live out the values of the College. They show that students are respec ul and compassionate, willing to assist and raise funds for those in need. In the coming week, we also have students par cipa ng in spor ng events. On Thursday our SATIS Swimming Team head to Hobart, whilst on the weekend we have two basketball teams heading to Sale to represent the College at the MSA Basketball carnival. We wish both groups the best of luck in their respec ve events.

Brave shave fills foundation’s coffers Last Thursday, the SRC hosted an event for the World's Greatest Shave in Conway Hall in aid of the Leukaemia Founda on. The event was a resounding success with many students finding the courage to shave their heads or wax their legs. Even Mr Lamb gave up his beard! Par cipa on was great with students from Year 7 through to Senior College volunteering themselves for the cause, and the turnout from students to spectate was excellent as well. All told, the efforts and sacrifices made by those involved raised $1075 for the Leukaemia Founda on, which, thanks to the efforts of all who par cipated, shaved, organised and a ended will be a great help to this generous organisa on and the fantas c work they do. PROTOCOL FOR PARENT AND STUDENT COMMUNICATION WITH STAFF In keeping with the Marist Regional College Values and Vision, the College strives to develop a posi ve rela onship between parents, staff and students; a partnership which promotes open communica on based on respec ul and courteous interac ons. In order for this to happen it is essen al that all parents are aware of the appropriate procedures which will facilitate posi ve interac ons between all par es.
While there are formal parent teacher interviews scheduled during the Year, we encourage parents to contact teachers as soon as required and not wait un l parent teacher interviews.
To facilitate meaningful communica on we ask that parents use the following procedure: Use your son or daughter’s school planner (diary) to send a message to staff;
If parents wish to speak to a class teacher or other relevant staff, request an appointment via the College Recep on staff on 03 6432 7600 and provide brief details regarding the issue to be discussed;
If you would like to speak to a staff member via telephone, please ring the College Recep on staff who will either take brief details or transfer the call directly to the staff member. The staff member may be involved in a mee ng, teaching or professional learning which can make it difficult to return the call on the same day.
We encourage the use of email but suggest that it is restricted to dissemina on of informa on as there is always the risk of misinterpreta on.
Making a formal appointment will ensure that adequate me is made available by staff to fully discuss your concerns. Relay for Life 2014
Saturday 22 March opened up with beau ful sunny weather and upbeat emo ons as Relay for Life kicked off at the newly refurbished Dial Spor ng Complex in Penguin. Close to 100 Teams par cipated in the annual event, keeping individual team batons moving around the track for 24 hours to celebrate with cancer survivors, remember those we have lost and fight back against the horrible disease that is cancer. MRC entered with a team filled with 44 students from Years 7 through 12 and the numerous parents and care givers who assisted as well. Many staff members were also present throughout the 24 hour endeavour such as Judy Cocks, Tanner Barre Fiona Hamilton, Chelsea Gale, Michelle Benne , Alison O’Donnell, Carolyn Winchcombe, Ron Chequer, Michael Ireland, Susan Bracken, Adrian and Paula Pearce and Richard Fedosejevs who not only was there numerous mes of the day (and early morning) but also assisted in li le jobs to make everyone’s experience more enjoyable. Special men on goes out to Mrs Robyn Smith who remained at the camp site for majority of the 24 hours watching over students and assis ng with running of the team all while ge ng some much needed marking done for her classes; the team would not have been able to par cipate without your input so a big thank you to Robyn. With approximately 360 laps walked, jogged, ran or danced as the case may be the MRC team behaved in the most professional manner, represen ng the school with dignity, respect and smiles as they carried the baton (named Sven) around the track for this incredibly humbling cause. Well done to all par cipants and a big thank you to all who played a part in the Relay Team 2014 you should be all be extremely proud. By Ayla Nu ng

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS Congratula ons go to: CANOEING and SURF LIFE SAVING Brad Rubock who will be at the Australian Canoeing Sprint Na onal Championships at West Lakes, South Australia end of March, then going onto represent Tasmania in Western Australia for the 2014 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in April
NSATIS summer sport rounds 6 and 7 In a double‐header of crucial games that could decide final ladder posi ons, Marist hosted St Patricks last Wednesday in a full round of games and then the Boys and Girls Firsts basketball teams, and Girls Seconds and both Boys tennis teams travelled to Devonport on Monday a ernoon to take on St Brendan’s. BASKETBALL BOYS Last Wednesday, the Boys Firsts played one of their toughest games for the roster. A much bigger St Pats travelled to Burnie hoping to turn the tables on our first round 2‐point victory. Both teams were slow to find their feet, with St Pats se ling the be er and going to the first break ahead by 2 points. Through some determined team work and ght defence Marist was able to go to the hal ime break 5 points up. Con nual pressure by a physically larger team was not enough to claw back the lead and Marist went on to win the game, 45‐33. Jaylen Howard was inspira onal, leading from the front in a dominant SURF LIFE SAVING display. He was well supported by Daniel Bransden, Brad Wescombe and Wes de Bomford. Lara Emme will be represen ng Tasmania in The Seconds played an older and larger opponent in the second game of the a ernoon. It was soon apparent that size is not necessarily the best op on in a basketball game. April at the Australia Surf Marist's combina on of youth, determina on and refined skills was too much for the Life Saving Championships in Perth WA opposi on. In a physical encounter, Marist was able to build a solid lead and hold on to it throughout the match. Mitch Rowlands, Ben Keiselis and Kobe Jackson were unstoppable all over the court and they were well supported by Joel Purton and Lennard Smith. Final scores, Marist 40 defeated St Pats 28. Monday saw Marist Firsts travel to Devonport to play St Brendan‐Shaw. With a depleted squad due to injury, the boys were more than a li le nervous. The game started well for the boys and it was soon clear that Marist's defensive pressure and well‐rehearsed plays were enough to establish a good lead early. Quick transi on and pressure from Kyle Harman and Bailey Boag provided Brad Wescombe and Daniel Bransden with many scoring opportuni es. Marist con nued to build on its lead and was able to run away with the game, 45‐31.
This Wednesday we play Scotch Oakburn in the final round of the home and away season. Good luck to all teams for Wednesday. Mr Grant Sims | team manager
