TAPE RECORDER FOR MOTORISTS As well as free love and anti-war demonstrations, the ’60s were actually a time of rapid technological advancement. At the forefront of this was Dutch company, Philips, which, in 1966, introduced the Tape Recorder for Motorists. It was portable and could either run off five 1.5V torch batteries, or you could hotwire it into your campervan’s 12V battery system. It was supplied with a housing unit, necessary cable, microphone and three blank tapes. If you actually wanted to lug it outside then, according to ye olde MMM,, it came with a, “portable leather carrier with shoulder straps.” And all yours for the bargain price of £42, which is £1.7million in today’s money (ED it’s actually around £700). PURE POP MIDI Alternatively, back in the shiny future, we have a portable DAB+ radio with Bluetooth connectivity so you can stream all your tunes to it. There’s also FM if you happen to wander into the dark ages on your travels. The Pure Pop Midi is an oblong shape with natty black headband that holds the time and station details. Atop this, a creamy plastic roof houses the controls, which make it easy to autoscan for new channels, scroll through them and save the best ones to the preset buttons. Sound quality is decent and just about loud enough, there’s also a headphone socket so you don’t annoy other passengers. The Midi costs £84.99 and is the middle speaker in the range. Contact:

CREATIVE AURVANA ANC ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ ✭ þ ANC works well þ Great sound þ Comes with hard case ý Some noise leak ý No Bluetooth ý No volume control If spending hours on the motorway or autobahn as a passenger, listening to the constant traffic noise as you head for your destination, is one of the barely tolerable consequences of a motorhome life, then have a look at the Aurvana ANC headphones. The ANC stands for Active Noise Cancellation, and with a flick of a switch on the side, the ambient hum around you will suddenly disappear. They work by sampling the ambient noise and applying the reverse audio waveform to them. You still get to listen to music or audio sources, of course, as the headphones come with a corded wire and jack plug to stick into your phone or tablet. A button on the wire is used to toggle the sound on and off, but they do lack both volume control and Bluetooth capability. Sound wise though, they are very good and even better when the ANC is on, so while you are wrapped up in a warm blanket of distraction-free audio for £99.99, everyone else gets your annoying background noise. Marketplace review MINI FIREFIGHTER þ Handy size þ Treats all fire types þ Up to nine litres of foam ý Doesn’t replace existing extinguisher ý Shake first A fire in your motorhome is a frightening prospect, but, when faced with a small fire, it’s handy to have something that can put it out before it turns into an all-consuming conflagration. That’s the purpose of the Mini Firefighter, which comes in an aerosol can, so it can be stored easily. Give it a shake and spray out the Boldfoam F40, which expands to produce up to nine litres of foam in 20 seconds. It’s non-toxic, so can be safely cleaned up afterwards and can be sprayed on fabrics and plastics, hydrocarbons like petrol and solvents, fat and oil fires and electrical fires. Unlike some other portable extinguishers, you only need to spray as much as is needed to put the fire out. Special offer price is £17.95 (normally £25). Contact:
