Precautions in connection with Fire Print Date: 28/05/2008 Use fire extinguisher suitable for surrounding environment. Toxic and/or irritating gases that may be emitted by explosion include carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. A trace amount of lead originating from the priming composition will be released. After the ignition of the cartridge the explosion will take place very quickly. 165°C (dangerous ingredients) Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) operated in positive pressure mode. Fire near the storage area: Evacuate the danger area, spray storage area and CS: 1.4.22 Material Safety Data Sheet CS: 1.4.22 Page: Infosafe No™ ACREA Issue Date :May 2008 ISSUED by HILTI 3 of 6 CS: 1.4.22 Product Name :HILTI DX CARTRIDGES container with water. Fire in the storage area: Evacuate the danger area, fight the fire from a safe distance and spray the non ignited article to cool them. Burning of large quantities may accelerate to detonation. Inform the emergency services of the nature of the product. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Emergency Procedures Protect the vicinity by excluding the public and all unprotected personnel. Raise awareness to the risk of ignition. Employ signage and inform the police. The location of the spillage has to be cleaned. Do not use tools to gather scattered cargo. Gather by hand only and forward to authorised disposal personnel. Exposed explosives must be carefully wiped up and desensitised in a specially marked container of water. If the spillage enters the waterways contact the EPA, or your local water authority. Dispose of waste according to applicable local and national regulations. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Precautions for Safe Handling Conditions for Safe Storage Keep away from heat and ignition sources, and ensure good ventilation. Do not open cartridges with thermal or mechanical force, or subject them to impact, as this risks ignition. Ensure a high level of personal hygiene is maintained by washing hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using toilet facilities. Intended for use only with power actuated tools. Cartridges should only be handled by qualified persons. Delivery must be in closed original packaging. Store in a well ventilated area away from sources of ignition. Optimal storage temperature 20°C. To be stored in original packages at temperatures from -20°C to +40°C and in rooms protected from moisture. Short term storage from -40°C to +45°C is possible. Do not store together with incompatible and flammable substances. For information on the design of the storeroom reference should be made to Australian Standard AS 2187.1-1998 Explosives - Storage, transport and use - Storage. Reference should also be made to relevant Commonwealth, State or Territory regulations. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION National Exposure Standards Engineering Controls Respiratory Protection Eye Protection Print Date: 28/05/2008 No value is assigned for this specific material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) Australia, however the available exposure limits on the ingredients as provided by NOHSC are as follows: Substance TWA STEL ppm mg/m³ ppm mg/m³ Nitroglycerin (NG) 0.05 0.46 Diphenylamine 10 TWA (Time Weighted Average): The average airborne concentration of a particular substance when calculated over a normal eight-hour working day, for a five-day week. STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit): The average airborne concentration over a 15 minute period which should not be exceeded at any time during a normal eight-hour workday. In case of release of internal contents ensure sufficient ventilation to maintain airborne concentrations below exposure limits and prevent exposure to dusts. If engineering controls are not effective in controlling airborne exposure then an approved respirator with a replaceable vapour/mist filter should be used. Reference should be made to Australian/New Zealand Standards AS/NZS 1715, Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Devices; and AS/NZS 1716, Respiratory Protective Devices, in order to make any necessary changes for individual circumstances. Internal powder should not become airborne unless cartridge is intentionally tampered with or accidentally broken open. Safety glasses with side shields, goggles or full-face shield as appropriate recommended. Final choice of appropriate eye/face protection will vary according to individual circumstances i.e. methods of handling or engineering controls and according to risk assessments undertaken. Eye protection should conform with Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1337 - Eye Protectors for CS: 1.4.22 Material Safety Data Sheet CS: 1.4.22 Page: Infosafe No™ ACREA Issue Date :May 2008 4 of ISSUED by HILTI 6 CS: 1.4.22 Product Name :HILTI DX CARTRIDGES Hand Protection Body Protection Industrial Applications. Wear gloves of impervious material. Final choice of appropriate gloves will vary according to individual circumstances i.e. methods of handling or according to risk assessments undertaken. Reference should be made to AS/NZS 2161.1: Occupational protective gloves - Selection, use and maintenance. Wear appropriate clothing including chemical resistant apron where clothing is likely to be contaminated. It is advisable that a local supplier of personal protective clothing is consulted regarding the choice of material. Care should be taken to avoid contact with the skin should cartridge be opened and internal product exposed. 9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Appearance Metal case.
