It is designed to facilitate high-performance signaling and media testing of voice-over-IP (VoIP) and Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) networks. Thanks to its versatile testing capabilities including functional, load/ stress, regression, negative and denial of service (DoS) attack testing as well as its media generation and quality analysis capabilities, this dual Gigabit Ethernet series provides complete test coverage and delivers the renowned quality, flexibility and performance of EXFO’s VoIP and IMS testing solutions. Available in standard or lite version, each module of the MCM Gigabit Ethernet Interface series supports up to 256 000 SIP endpoints (512 000 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 1 280 000 per InterWatch R14), 64 000 BGF endpoints (256 000 per QualityAssurer QA 604 or 320 000 per InterWatch R14), 64 000 H.323 endpoints (256 000 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 320 000 per InterWatch R14) and 512 000 HSS subscribers (1 024 000 per QualityAssurer QA 604 or 2 560 000 per InterWatch R14). The standard version of this series—the MCM-GbE or MCM-GbE-R14 module—provides 64 000 RTP streams (128 000 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 320 000 per InterWatch R14) with a simultaneous RTCP stream for every RTP stream. As for the lite version—the MCM-GbE-Lite module—it offers a smaller media capacity supporting up to 10 000 RTP streams (20 000 per QualityAssurer QA-604) while maintaining the same signaling capacity provided on the standard version. All modules are designed to test both the IMS network core elements such as session control function (I/P/C-CSCFs), HSS and border elements such as the border gateway function (BGF) as well as VoIP network control elements, namely SIP registrar, redirect or proxy server. When used with high-performance and flexible SIP and HSS test applications, the MCM Gigabit Ethernet Interface series becomes an easy-to-use, all-in-one powerful solution to perform comprehensive VoIP and IMS network testing. The entire IMS network core can be tested by generating SIP traffic with EXFO’s sipFlex Test Suite on one port while emulating HSS with EXFO’s hssFlex Test Suite on the other port. Moreover, coupled with these two test suites, the complete signaling path of an IMS call can be characterized. Each module can generate 3600 SIP registrations per second (7200 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 18 000 per InterWatch R14), 850 SIP calls per second (1700 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 4250 per InterWatch R14) and SIP message flood, which emulates a DoS attack at 8600 per second (17 200 per QualityAssurer QA-604 or 43 000 per InterWatch R14). Combined with EXFO’s Megaco/H.248 BGF Test Suite, the signaling and media of the BGF in the IMS network can be tested together. This series is equipped with custom-designed field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), enabling real-time analysis of every media RTP stream for QoS, MOS or MDI on each packet received. The dedicated FPGAs also ensure accurate time-stamping of signaling messages with a 10-nanosecond time-stamp resolution. By measuring the precise time difference between any two messages, key performance indicators (KPIs) gauging the network response latency and call session establishment time can precisely be assessed to characterize the network’s performance under various conditions and traffic loads. Furthermore, by emulating service theft, injecting rogue media or emulating DoS attack, the session border controller (SBC) can be characterized. Other VoIP and IMS devices including security gateways, SIP proxy/registrar server and application servers such as Presence and IP Centrex can also be tested with the MCM Gigabit Ethernet Interface series. It also supports high-performance security protocols by using the hardware assisted security feature of the processor. Security protocols such as transport layer security (TLS), Internet protocol security (IPSec), secure real-time transport protocol (SRTP) and Internet key exchange (IKE) are integral components of VoIP and IMS networks. The ability to support large amount of such security connections is crucial to perform realistic IMS testing. The MCM Gigabit Ethernet Interface series supports two RJ-45 connectors for Gigabit Ethernet unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) connections and two small-form pluggable (SFP) connectors for fiber-optic connections. Each port can be controlled separately in a multi-user environment through EXFO’s QualityAssurer QA-604 and InterWatch R14 platforms, yielding a granularity of one user per port. Each of its two ports is connected to a dedicated PowerPC processor that runs an optimized Linux operating system to provide extremely high processing capacity to each port. A single QualityAssurer QA-604 can house up to two modules (four ports), while the InterWatch R14 can support up to five modules (ten ports). Both platforms can be managed with a single graphical user interface, making it the solution of choice to perform large-scale testing in a single test bed.
