logy Provi o n h c e T der U D s M — 2013 — Outstanding companies that owners of multiple-dwelling-unit properties rely on to provide technology amenities to their residents A BBC Staff Report I n 2012, Broadband Communities presented the first Top 100 list dedicated to companies that serve the multiple-dwellingunit (MDU) market. Because of the response it evoked, we’ve decided to make the listing an annual event. This list is more technology neutral than the FTTH Top 100 list that Broadband Communities publishes each July. A property owner whose most urgent priority is to improve indoor cellular coverage, get satellite dishes off balconies or add more high-definition stations to a community’s channel lineup can find resources here. However, the list does not address all possible applications of technology in multifamily housing. It focuses specifically on technologies used to make properties more attractive to residents. Included are companies that do one or more of the following: • Sell video, Internet, telephone and related services to residents of multifamily properties, either individually or in bulk, The specific technology amenities that attract MDU residents may vary according to the demographics of a community. through agreements with property owners • Design, build or manage broadband networks in multifamily properties under contract to property owners or service providers • Offer expertise to property owners or service providers about the legal, financial and marketing aspects of delivering broadband • Provide equipment for wired broadband networks in MDUs • Provide equipment for video headends and video distribution in MDUs • Provide equipment for wireless broadband (either cellular or Wi-Fi) in MDUs • Provide back-office software or services for subscriber management, customer care, billing and related functions • Offer solutions for MDU technology amenities beyond the triple play. Some of these companies sell products and services directly to property owners, and others sell products and services to their providers, such as private cable operators. However, whether property owners deal directly or indirectly with these companies, they all provide solutions that property owners should be aware of. CRITERIA AND SELECTION PROCESS To select the Top 100 MDU technology providers, Broadband Communities relied on a panel of industry experts that included property owners and their advisers. Because experts don’t 20 | BROADBAND COMMUNITIES | www.broadbandcommunities.com | OCTOBER 2013 MDU TOP 100 AT A GLANCE Alphabetical List . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 22 Service Providers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 24 Design, Engineering, Installation and Service Management . . . . . . . . | 30 Other Consulting and Contract Negotiation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 32 Equipment – Wired Broadband . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 34 Equipment – Video Headend, Video Distribution and Related . . . . . . | 38 Equipment – Wireless Broadband . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 40 Back-Office Software and Services . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 42 Broadband Applications . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 44 Companies to Watch . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 45 always agree and because changes were taking place in the industry as this feature was researched and prepared, the magazine’s editors made the final selections. In addition to operating in the U.S. market, companies needed to do the following: • Provide products or services that help property owners create technology amenities to attract and retain residents. The technology amenities that attract and retain residents vary depending on the residents an owner is trying to attract and retain. Some demographics are looking for blazing Internet speeds, over-thetop video solutions and ubiquitous wireless coverage; others want a wide variety of linear TV channels; others may want specialized channel lineups or the option of health-monitoring solutions. Of the companies on this list, some offer services targeted to a specific niche, and others offer flexible solutions that can be tailored to the needs of a particular community. • Have a history of innovation and successful deployments. Companies on the list may have been recommended by advisory panel members based on firsthand Did you like this article? Many technology products are frequently used in MDUs but are not specifically marketed to or for them. For example, cable settop boxes are found throughout MDUs everywhere, but they cannot be specifically classified as MDU products. Though only a minority of the companies on this list focus exclusively on the MDU market, most have sales divisions or specialized offerings that address this market and understand its needs. Don’t miss the Companies to Watch list, a baker’s dozen of companies that may not be as large or well-established as the Top 100 but are making names for themselves with innovative offerings.
