Even people who have never had an epileptic seizure before might be suffering from epilepsy, even if it has not yet been diagnosed. If someone in your family suffers from epilepsy, please contact your doctor before playing computer games. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms while playing the game: vertigo, impaired vision, muscle tremors or any kind of uncontrolled motion, loss of consciousness, disorientation or cramping. Troubleshooting Here we will provide you with a few tips in case technical problems prevent you from playing HELLDORADO. Problems with System Configuration First check to see if your computer meets the system requirements written on the DVD case. To do this you can use the DirectX diagnostic program. Start the diagnostic program by clicking on the “Start” button in the task bar and choose the menu point “Run.” The input window with the title “Run” appears. Enter “dxdiag” in the text field and click “OK.” Now the DirectX diagnostic program will start. It will provide you with an overview of all the relevant details about your system (for example about your graphics card and your sound card) and will make possible for you to check if your system meets the requirements for HELLDORADO. Problems with Direct X The DirectX diagnostic program does more than just provide you with an overview of details about your system. You can also use it to check if your graphics and sound are working correctly. Conduct the tests offered by the DirectX diagnostic program under the menu points “Display,” “Sound” and “Music.” Important! Note: Problems with the Sound Only make changes to the Options in DirectX if you are already familiar with the program. After quitting HELLDORADO you should reactivate all of the background applications. Just restart your PC and all of the background applications will be automatically reactivated. If you have problems with choppy or stuttering sound, or if there are interruptions in the sound reproduction, you should install the latest driver for your sound card. Here is a list of the most popular manufacturers: Problems with Disk Space Creative Labs: For your system to work properly it needs to be maintained now and then. The best way to do this is to use the programs included with Windows: ScanDisk, or Error-checking, Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. The regular use of these programs will not only help HELLDORADO run better on your system, but will also help other applications run faster and with greater stability. You can find information on how to use the Windows system programs in Windows Help. Click on the “Start” button in the Taskbar and choose the option “Help” or “Help and Support.” Windows Help will appear. Search for the terms “ScanDisk” (Win 98/ME), “Error checking” (Win 2000/XP), “Disk Defragmenter” and “Disk Cleanup.” Diamond: Problems with System Performance On most computers there are programs that are active in the background even if they are not started by the user when booting up the system. Among these are antivirus applications or crash guard programs. Even though these programs are “only” running in the background, they make demands on computing power, which can lead to problems when running HELLDORADO, and can even cause the program to quit. Before starting HELLDORADO, close the background applications to free up system resources for the game. Background applications... ... Close by Using the Taskbar Most of the background applications running on your computer appear as small icons in the taskbar. Move the cursor over the icons and right click with the mouse. A drop down menu for the program you selected will appear. Close the program by clicking on the appropriate menu point (“Deactivate,” “Close,” “Exit,” etc.). Problems with Performance For games like HELLDORADO, which use the most recent version of DirectX, it is important that you have the latest driver for your graphics card installed. Otherwise the game will play jerkily, hang or even crash. ... Close by Using the Task Manager Windows XP Professional: Hold down the buttons [CTRL] and [ALT], then press the [DEL] button. The Windows Security window will appear. Click on the “Task Manager” button. The Task Manager will open. Click on the tab that says “Applications.” You will see all of the background applications that are currently running on your system. You can close an application by clicking on the appropriate entry in the task list and then clicking the “End Task” button. Close all the applications that appear in the task list. Press the [ESC] key to leave the Game Menu. Installing and Uninstalling Installing HELLDORADO Place the DVD in your computer’s DVD drive. If the “Autoplay” option has been activated for the drive, the installation menu will open automatically. Otherwise you will have to open it manually. Open “My Computer” on your desktop and go to the directory for your DVD drive. Double click on the file “Setup.exe” to launch the installation menu. Now click on the button “Install Game” and follow the instructions provided by the installation program. Saving and loading To save a game, click on the selection “Save” in the Game Menu, name the current game and click “Save” Another way to save is by pressing [F5] during the game. This will create a Quick Save, which you can load at any time by pressing [F8]. In case you save at a bad time, HELLDORADO also keeps a backup of the previous Quick Save, which you can call up by pressing [SHIFT] + [F8], or, like all other saved games, by choosing the “Load” option from the Game Menu. Uninstalling HELLDORADO You can remove HELLDORADO from you computer at any time. Open the “Start” menu in MS Windows and go to the folder “Helldorado.” Then click on “Uninstall Helldorado.” You can also use the “Add or Remove Programs” option in the “Control Panel.” Another option is to uninstall HELLDORADO using the installation options in the game’s Start Menu. Game Options Click on “Options” in the Game Menu to see the following five menu choices: Starting the Game > Graphics Options – Use this menu option to change the screen resolution and the level of detail of the game graphics. > Audio Options – Choose this menu option to change the volume of the music, the background noises and the speech. You can also turn subtitles on and off or adjust the frequency of comments by the PCs. > Mouse Options – You can use this option to adjust the mouse settings to match your play style. For example, you can choose whether to use the mouse wheel for zooming or for changing weapons. In dual mode, the mouse wheel is used for zooming in the isometric view, and in the 3rd person view it is used for changing weapons. > Controls – Use this menu option to adjust the keyboard setting to suit your requirements. The default keyboard setting is described later in this manual. > Difficulty – Here you can adjust the level of difficulty for HELLDORADO. There are three levels of difficulty: “Desperado” (hard), “Pistolero” (standard or medium), and “Greenhorn” (easy). The level of difficulty affects the number of bonus objects available, how long enemies remain unconscious, the amount of damage your characters do to their enemies, how frequently enemies shoot, the number of enemies who attack your characters at once, and the speed with which an enemy notices your characters and registers them as a threat. At the lowest difficulty level (“Greenhorn”), your characters will regain life force as time passes. The preferences of enemies are also deactivated, which means that Kate can seduce all enemies, and not just some of them. Cooper can also attract all enemies, and not just certain ones, with his watch, etc. In addition to having these concrete effects on game play, the level of difficulty also influences your evaluation later in the game. If you complete a mission The Start Menu As soon as you start the game, the Start Menu will appear. From here you can start the game, change the installation options, read the digital manual or have a look at the latest information. The Game Menu At the beginning of the game the Game Menu will appear. During the game you can open the Game Menu by pressing the [ESC] key. From the Game Menu, you can choose among the following menu points: > Play (when starting) – Start a new game or continue the game from the last save point. > Resume Game (during the game) – Continue playing the current game. > Restart (during the game) – Start the current mission from the beginning. > Load – Load a saved game. > Knife (F3): Cooper is not just an excellent shot and knife thrower; he’s also skilled at close combat with a knife, which allows him to kill his enemies silently. But of course to do this he needs to sneak up on his enemies first. > Musical watch (F4): Cooper has an old musical watch. An heirloom. It’s actually nothing special, but it plays a beautiful melody, which attracts curious opponents. Pay attention to the note symbol. Only opponents who are marked with this symbol will fall for Cooper’s watch trick. at the “Desperado” level, you will be awarded a gold medal. If you play as a “Pistolero” you will be awarded a silver medal, and if you play as a “Greenhorn” you will be awarded a bronze medal. > If you activate the option “Show the Names of Important People,” the names or professions of people who are important for the course of the mission will be shown over their heads in isometric view. Other Abilities Introduction > Carry a person: Copper can pick up someone who is tied up, unconscious or dead and carry him/her away. It doesn’t matter if the person is an opponent, a civilian or a friend. If Cooper is carrying someone, he can’t run or climb a ladder. To lay down his burden at a particular point, just right click with the mouse. The Story Kate O’Hara Santa Fe in the late summer of 1883. A few weeks ago Cooper and his friends brought chaos to the city in their search for Lester Lloyd Goodman, who murdered Cooper’s brother, but now things have returned to normal. Lester Lloyd Goodman is dead and buried, and his railway empire lies in ruins. Cooper enjoys his bittersweet revenge, but only for a short while, because something else is wrong: Doc McCoy has disappeared. He was kidnapped and poisoned. The person behind the disappearance seems to be Goodman’s widow. She meets Cooper in a church in Santa Fe, where she makes him a diabolical offer: she will spare Doc’s life if Cooper will carry out a few assignments that will brand him as a criminal. Cooper agrees. Together with his friends he sets out to free Doc McCoy. But the more enmeshed they become in the crime, the clearer it becomes that much more is involved than the revenge of a young woman. Kate is a gambler through and through. It has to do with more than just the way she plays poker passionately and professionally; for her, all of life is one big game. Kate wants to win at all costs, even if it is unclear when or how outcome of the game will be decided. Kate keeps score by the number of men she can make turn their heads and by how much money she wins playing cards. On a mission two things are important to her: the size of the bounty and the difficulty of the task. The more difficult a task is, the more powerfully it appeals to her instincts as a gambler. In her imagination the bounty is like a jackpot she needs to win. The bigger the jackpot the better, even though she doesn’t need the money. Special Abilities John Cooper > Derringer (F1): Kate’s Derringer does not have a lot of stopping power, but it is small and handy and it fits well in a garter, where no one would ever expect to find a revolver – especially not on a woman who smiles as alluringly as Kate. > Powder compact (F2): An ordinary powder compact? Every woman has one; however, Kate’s compact is filled with a special sedative powder. She uses it to knock out her enemies by blowing powder in their faces. The advantage: enemies who have been knocked out in this way don’t fall down, and therefore no one notices that they are actually asleep. > Seduction (F3): Kate’s effect on men (at least on the ones who are marked with a mouth symbol) is devastating. Kate knows this only too well and uses her knowledge shamelessly. Her tactic is simple: she positions herself so that the man she wants to seduce can see her well. Then she fiddles innocently with her garter and waits until her victim – who now only has eyes for Kate – approaches her to flirt with her. Enemies who have fallen for Kate are easy to take out. But you should not wait too long, because at some point even the stupidest bandit notices that Kate is just playing with him. Also, if several enemies are seduced, a nice little fight will break out among them. > Fainting (F4): Kate can draw the attention of enemies by falling to the ground, of course only after she has said loudly: “Oh my God, I feel dizzy!” Enemies who are marked with the Cooper is the classic gunslinger, quiet and reserved. If worst comes to worst, he can easily take on two or three opponents at the same time. But Cooper does not rely on his revolver alone; he also makes use of his sharp intellect, which gives him a second weapon: cunning. It makes him the leader among his friends and allows him to track down any bandit, no matter how clever. The years Cooper spent working as a bounty hunter have made him a rough character, but deep within his heart he is an idealist who longs for a better, fairer world. Special Abilities > Colt (F1): Cooper can’t draw his revolver faster than his shadow, but he draws it faster than any other man in North America. Therefore it does not matter much that his favourite weapon does not have the range of Doc’s Buntline or the stopping power of Sam’s Winchester. A gunslinger relies on his speed, his accuracy, and the six bullets in his magazine. > Throwing knife (F2): His steady hand and his good eye make Cooper a dangerous knife thrower. The advantage: a well thrown knife has the same effect as a shot, but it is much, much quieter. However, Cooper needs to retrieve the knife after he has thrown it. Sam Williams symbol of a fly will run to her and try to wake her up. But be careful: other enemies have no sympathy for Kate. They will kill her as soon as they see her. Sam is always smiling; he radiates happiness and vitality. It’s enough to make Doc throw up. Sam loves everything about life: nature, food, and women. But there is something he loves more than anything else: explosives. It doesn’t matter if it’s TNT, dynamite or nitroglycerin, Sam loves it. He feels truly at home wherever he can light a fuse, wherever there are explosions and smoke. Other Abilities > Tying up: Kate can tie up unconscious opponents or civilians with a rope. But take note: If another opponent finds someone who is tied up, he will untie him. Doc McCoy If Doc were a gravedigger, based on outside appearance alone, no one would be surprised. His skin always appears a little pale and unhealthy, and the long scar on his face, along with his eye patch, lends him a grimly threatening appearance. His morbid appearance is nicely accentuated by his preference for black clothing and his penetrating gaze. It doesn’t help that Doc is always clean shaven, does not allow any spots on his jacket, always wears his starched white shirt buttoned to his neck and meticulously brushes the dust from his pants after a long ride. To other people he appears like a cheerless envoy of death – and that is in fact what he is. Special Abilities > Winchester (F1): Sam’s favourite weapon, with 12 shots. The Winchester has fairly long range and fairly good stopping power. > Cans of nitroglycerin (F2): Sam puts old cans on the floor, filled to the brim with nitroglycerin. If anyone shoots at a can or kicks it, it will explode. > Dynamite (F3): With his sticks of dynamite Sam can take out a whole group of opponents quickly and effectively. However, the dynamite only works on people; it cannot be used to blow up doors or buildings. Additionally, the deadly effect of the dynamite is confined to a small radius. Characters outside this radius will merely become unconscious. > TNT (F4): In some of the missions Sam finds a bundle of TNT. He can use the TNT to blow up certain buildings or landmarks (pay attention to the red marker). As soon as Sam has put the TNT in the right place, he or one of the other heroes can blow it sky high with a well aimed shot. Special Abilities > Buntline (F1): Doc’s favourite weapon, with six shots. Due to the long barrel, the Buntline is much less easy to manage than Cooper’s Colt. It has a long range and is very powerful, which is why Doc, a technology enthusiast, likes it. > Telescopic site and precision bullets (F2): Doc carries everything imaginable around with him in his doctor’s bag – including a telescopic sight and a pair of specially designed bullets. The telescopic sight and the precision bullets give the Buntline even more range and make it possible for Doc to choose his targets very, very precisely. > Gas vial (F3): Doc has small vials that are filled with knockout gas. Whoever breaths the gas will fall into a deep coma. It’s also not necessary to throw the gas vials in every case. You can also conceal them under an unconscious or dead opponent, and if another opponent tries to move the person, he will get an unpleasant surprise. > Healing (F4): Doc can heal wounded heroes up to a certain percentage if he has a first aid kit with him. Click on the symbol with the first aid kit and then on the friend you want to heal. Doc can also heal himself. He can also revive unconscious characters. Other Abilities > Tying up: Sam can tie up unconscious opponents or civilians with a rope. But take note: If another opponent finds someone who is tied up, he will untie him. Pablo Sanchez Sanchez is the fourth son of the sixth wife of Diego Ramon Sanchez, the greatest and most prolific Mexican bandit of all time, and he’s as strong as a bear. As a feared bandit, he brought honour to his family, but somehow in recent times he has found himself more and more on the side of the law… a turn of events that appears to Sanchez somewhat false and dishonourable. But what is a man to do when adventure calls and Cooper always knows exactly what is going on? Other Abilities Special Abilities > Tying up: Doc can tie up unconscious opponents or civilians with a rope. But take note: If another opponent finds someone who is tied up, he will untie him. > Skeleton key: Doc has a skeleton key, which he can use to open locks. Sawed-off shotgun (F1): Sanchez’s favourite weapon, with two shots. Exactly the right gun to send an evil bastard to hell at a short distance. But at longer ranges the shotgun is rather ineffective. > Stone (F2): Sanchez can put his enemies to sleep by hitting them with well aimed rocks. Other than a dull sound of impact and a light groaning, this does not make any noise. > Tequila (F3): Like any true Mexican bandit, Sanchez always has a few bottles of tequila with him. Even though he prefers to drink the tequila himself, when necessary he can put the bottles in places where they will easily be found by opponents. Many enemies are parti> Every one of your heroes can … al to the Mexican firewater and will drink without any restraint as soon as they find one of Sanchez’s bottles. But pay attention to see if an opponent is marked with a glass symbol or not. If several opponents discover Sanchez’s tequila, a fight will decide who can drink it. > Bear trap (F4): Sanchez has a bear trap, which can kill a grown man with a single blow. His favourite place to hide the trap is behind haystacks and bushes, so unsuspecting opponents only notice it when it is too late. ... move much more quietly when crouching or lying down, so they don’t attract attention. Opponents will notice a hero who is crouching or lying down less quickly than they will one who is standing. Generally Sanchez moves the loudest, while Hawkeye is the most silent. … box and knock out an opponent. The severity and the duration of the knockout depend on the strength of the hero and the resistance of the opponent. Sanchez and Hawkeye can send an opponent into a coma for a long time. The yellow stars (1 to 5) indicate how much longer and opponent will remain unconscious. Red stars indicate that a character will remain unconscious for a long time (coma). No matter how many stars are around a character’s head, he can always be revived by other characters. … pick up bonus objects like ammunition, new gas vials, arrows, etc. However, a hero can only pick up objects that he or she can use. For example, Hawkeye can pick up an arrow, but not a gas vial or a stick of dynamite. … open and close unlocked doors. Doc is the only one who can open locked doors. There are also some doors with locks that even he can’t pick. ... ascend and descend ladders. … mount a horse and ride it.. ... lean around corners in the third person view and shoot from behind cover. Other Abilities > Carry a person: Sanchez can pick up someone who is tied up, unconscious or dead and carry him/her away. It doesn’t matter if the person is an opponent, a civilian or a comrade. If Sanchez is carrying someone, he can’t run or climb a ladder. To lay down his burden at a particular point, just right click with the mouse. > Strength: Sanchez is so incredibly strong that he can knock an opponent into a coma with a single punch. Hawkeye Hawkeye is the son of the Chief of the Tribe of the White Wolf. He was raised by the shamans of the tribe according to the ancient principles of the North American Indians. No matter what the situation, Hawkeye always acts nobly and honourably, just as a wolf acts nobly and honourably. His body is always taut like the string of a bow right before a shot. He is prepared to face danger at any moment. When he needs to take action, his movements become flexible and quick, without losing any of their ritualistic appearance. Game Controls Special Abilities > Bow (F1): Hawkeye’s standard weapon, which can shoot arrows in rapid succession. His attack with the bow is silent except for the soft groaning made by his opponents when they are hit. > Tomahawk (F2): The tomahawk makes Hawkeye a formidable opponent in close combat. Its attack is absolutely silent and only allows his enemies time to groan briefly. > War cry (F3): Hawkeye uses his ancestral war cry to draw the attention of his enemies to himself. > Healing (F4): Hawkeye has mastered the art of shamanistic healing. If he has the right herb, Hawkeye can heal all of the characters who are friendly to him if they are near him. Left Mouse Click and Right Mouse Click Left Mouse Click By clicking the left mouse button you confirm an action in the game. A left mouse click corresponds to a nod of the head or a decisive “Yes!” Right Mouse Click By clicking the right mouse button you reject an action in the game. A right mouse click corresponds to shaking the head or a decisive “No!” Other Abilities > Carry a person: Hawkeye can pick up someone who is tied up, unconscious or dead and carry him/her away. It doesn’t matter if the person is an opponent, a civilian or a comrade. If Hawkeye is carrying someone, he can’t run or climb a ladder. To lay down his burden at a particular point, just right click with the mouse. > Silent motion: Hawkeye moves very quietly. Thus, he is better than any of the other heroes at sneaking up on his opponents and defeating them at close range. > Strength: Hawkeye might not have as much muscle mass as Sanchez, but he knows how to concentrate his strength so well that he can knock an opponent into a coma with just one punch. You can also Reloading a Weapon left click on the symbol of the standing, crouching or lying character in the lower-left corner of the screen. In the isometric view the characters automatically reload their weapons during pauses in gunfights, if needed. In the 3rd person view weapons can be reloaded manually by pressing [R]. If reloading is taking too long, you can interrupt it by right clicking or simply by starting to shoot again. Stop You can make any selected character stop moving by right clicking with the mouse. Buildings and Obstacles Cancelling an Action Right click with the mouse on any point on the map or select another action. Entering/leaving buildings Context actions Isometric view: The roofs of buildings you can enter automatically become transparent as soon as you move the mouse over the building. If a character is in a building, the roof will remain transparent until the character leaves the building again. Click on an unlocked door to open or close it, or simply click on the building (this will automatically open the doors). Context actions are actions in which one of your characters interacts with an object. For example, Cooper can carry a body or open a door. As soon as the cursor is moved over an object with which the selected character can interact, the cursor will take on the form of the corresponding context action. Please Note: Not every character can perform all context actions (for example, Doc, unlike Cooper, cannot carry a body, but he can tie up unconscious enemies). Moving with a Drawn Weapon 3rd Person View: Simply direct your characters into the building with the arrow keys or the [W], [A], [S], [D] keys. You can open and close doors with the [SPACEBAR], which is context sensitive, as soon as the symbol for the door appears on the upper edge of the screen. In the 3rd person view you can direct a character with a drawn weapon as usual with the arrow keys or the [W], [A], [S] and [D] keys. In the isometric view you must hold down the left [CTRL] key and left click with the mouse on any point on the map, so that the selected character with a drawn weapon will move to this destination. As soon as you release the left [CTRL] key, the character will stop and be ready to fire. Locked Doors Doc, and only Doc, is able to open most of the locked doors. Select Doc and left click on the door whose lock you want him to pick. Enter a Hideout Combo Actions If an accessible area is hidden in the current perspective, the cursor will become transparent. However, you can still order your character to enter the area. If there are two accessible areas, with one above the other (for example an upper floor inside a building) you can go to the higher area (the upper floor) by left clicking with the mouse. You can go to the lower area (the lower floor) by holding down the left [SHIFT] key and left clicking on the corresponding area. Your heroes have abilities they can use in combination with other heroes. For example, Hawkeye can shoot a dynamite arrow if Sam has already attached a stick of dynamite to the arrow. Use the mouse to open the palette for Combo Actions in the lower left corner of the screen, or press [C] on the keyboard. Then choose one of the Combo Actions by clicking the mouse, or simultaneously press the two keys assigned to the heroes who are taking part in the Combo Action. As a rule, the two heroes will move together to prepare for the Combo Action. Therefore, if the heroes are standing a long distance away from each other and it is possible that they might have to walk through an enemy’s field of vision, a death’s head symbol will appear to warn you against carrying out the Combo Action you selected. For many Combo Actions you will need special objects (for example an arrow and a stick of dynamite). The numbers above the Combo Actions indicate how many of the required objects you still have. By pressing [V] on the keyboard you can repeat the last Combo Action you performed. Climbing Ladders Simply left click on the point you want your character to go to. If there is a ladder along the way, the character will use it automatically. PC Actions Select an Action Left click with the mouse on one of the action symbols under the picture of the selected character on the left edge of the screen or press keys [F1] through [F4] to select an action. When an Action is Possible/Impossible If an action is not yet available or an object required for the action is not present (for example Cooper’s watch), the corresponding action symbol will be greyed out. In such cases, the action cannot be selected. Quick Actions There are a total of 15 different Combo Actions, or one for each pair of heroes: > Cooper and Kate (Lovers): Cooper and Kate experience the healing power of love. When they kiss each other, they get vitality back, just like that. > Cooper and Doc (Gunslingers): Cooper and Doc shoot wildly at all the enemies in an area you define by selecting it with the mouse. > Cooper and Sam (Brawlers): Cooper and Sam attack and knock out all the enemies in an area you define by selecting it with the mouse. > Cooper and Sanchez (Clean Up Crew): Cooper and Sanchez pick up all the unconscious, tied up or dead opponents in an area you define by selecting it with the mouse, and then stack them up in another area that you also define with the mouse. > Cooper and Hawkeye (Blood Brothers): With knife and tomahawk, Cooper and Hawkeye take out all the opponents in an area you define by selecting it with the mouse. > Kate and Doc (Chemists): Kate fills one of Doc’s vials with sedative powder. As soon as she’s done, Doc can throw the vial. The vial will no longer act as a normal gas vial, but will have the effect of Kate’s powder instead. > Kate and Sam (Binders): Kate and Sam run loose and tie up all the unconscious opponents in an area you define by selecting it with the mouse. > Kate and Sanchez (Kidnapper): Sanchez grabs Kate, throws her over his shoulder and acts like he is kidnapping her. Kate screams as loud as she can. Opponents who witness the kidnapping don’t attack Kate or Sanchez, but instead enjoy the spectacle. > Kate and Hawkeye (Cupid’s Arrow): Kate ties a bag of sedative powder to one of Hawkeye’s arrows. This turns an ordinary arrow into a knock-out arrow, which Hawkeye can shoot and which unleashes the same effect as Kate’s powder. > Doc and Sam (Jokers): Doc fills one of Sam’s cans with gas. Sam can place the can the same way he usually does. If someone shoots the can or kicks it, it will unleash the same effect as one of Doc’s gas vials. > Doc and Sanchez (Distillers): Doc fills one of Sanchez’s tequila bottles with gas. If someone opens the bottle or shoots at it, the gas will escape. > Doc and Hawkeye (Tsetse): Doc ties a gas vial to one of Hawkeye’s arrows. The effect of the gas remains the same, but Hawkeye can shoot the vial much further that Doc could throw it. > Sam and Sanchez (Incendiaries): Sam lights up one of Sanchez’s tequila bottles. Now Sanchez can put the bottle anywhere. If an opponent discovers the burning bottle, confusion will ensue. > Sam and Hawkeye (Missile): Sam ties a stick of dynamite to one of Hawkeye’s arrows. The effect of the dynamite remains the same, but the arrow will carry the dynamite much further than Sam could throw it. > Sanchez and Hawkeye (Actors): Sanchez acts as though he has captured an Indian (namely Hawkeye) and parades him around in front of the enemies. The enemies do not attack Sanchez and Hawkeye, but instead concentrate their full attention on the act they are putting on. Recording Quick Actions You can switch to the Quick Action record mode by left clicking on the pencil in the lower right-hand corner of the screen or by pressing the [+] key. Then you can give the selected character the desired commands. He/she “remembers” up to five commands, but does not perform them immediately. You can see the commands you have given to the character on the right edge of the screen. In the isometric view you will see the path you have planned for your character marked with way points. Quick Action in Case of Visual Contact If you click on the eye above the pencil or press the [‘] key before defining a Quick Action, the selected character will perform further commands only after an enemy has entered his/her range of vision. If another eye appears in the current Quick Action list, your hero will wait for the next NPC. Confirming Quick Actions The Quick Actions planned in record mode can be confirmed and saved by left clicking on the thumbs up symbol above the pencil or by clicking the [ENTER] key again. Discarding Quick Actions Click on the thumbs down symbol over the pencil if you want to discard the Quick Actions of the selected character. Discarding Individual Quick Actions To erase a hero’s last Quick Action, press the [BACKSPACE] key. If you hold down the [BACKSPACE] key, you will erase all the Quick Actions of the selected character. Optional: Pause Mode while Planning Quick Actions If you have selected the option “Pause while planning Quick Actions” under the heading “Difficulty” in the Game Options Menu, the game will pause as soon as you switch to Quick Action Record Mode. In this mode you can plan your Quick Actions without any time pressure or dangerous interruptions. The game will continue only after you have left Quick Action Record Mode by confirming or discarding the Quick Actions you have entered. Performing Quick Actions Press the [ENTER] key or left click on the speaking tube above the pencil to start the Quick Actions you have planned. The characters will start to perform the previously planned Quick Actions. Commands that are not marked with the eye symbol will be performed immediately. Commands that are marked with the eye symbol will be performed only when an enemy enters the corresponding hero’s field of vision. If it is not possible for one of your heroes to perform a planned action (for example because there is no more ammunition available or because an enemy is out of range), the Quick Action for the corresponding hero will be interrupted. At the next best opportunity, you can start the Quick Actions again, so your hero can carry out the remaining Quick Actions. If the symbols over an NPC’s head are greyed out, the NPC still has the relevant preferences, but is prevented from acting on them by a sense of duty. Performing Quick Actions in Film Mode Showing the Sound Area If you click on the film over the pencil or press the [ [ ] key, you will activate Film Mode. Then the performance of the Quick Actions will be presented to you in the form of an edited film sequence. You can leave Film Mode at any time by pressing the [ESC] key or right clicking with the mouse. You can also export the film sequence by clicking on the diskette. Hold down the [N] key or left click with the mouse on the ear symbol on the lower right-hand edge of the screen if you want to see the range within which your hero can be heard. The “Mission Completed” Screen and the Medals After every concluded mission the “Mission Completed” screen will appear. Here you will see how you acted during the course of the mission (quietly and carefully, loudly and aggressively, or deceptively) and how well you did in combat. You will also be given an award in the form of a medal. The medals you can win during a mission are distinguished by their colour and their imprint. View Cone and More Information Displaying a View Cone Left click with the mouse on the eye symbol on the lower right-hand corner of the screen or hold down the [ALT] key and move the cursor over the desired enemy or civilian. The colour of the medal depends on the level of difficulty at which you played the mission. If you played the entire mission at the difficulty level “Desperado,” you will be awarded a gold medal at the end. For the difficulty level “Pistolero” you will be awarded a silver medal, and for “Greenhorn” you will receive a bronze medal. If a view cone has no pattern, your heroes can only enter it for a short time, if at all, and at a great distance without being discovered. If the area of the view cone shows a narrow checked pattern, and if your heroes are at least lying down, they can remain in the enemy view cone without the alarm being sounded. If the view cone shows a wider checked pattern your heroes can remain within it undiscovered if they are lying down or crouching. The imprint of the medal depends on the way you played the game during that particular mission. If you acted quietly and secretively and predominantly used weapons like Cooper’s knife, Doc’s vials or Hawkeye’s bow, you will receive an award for stealth. If you relied chiefly on your firepower, you will receive an award for shooting. If you were especially deceptive and mostly used Cooper’s watch, Kate’s powers of seduction and similar tricks, you will receive an award for setting traps. If you used all of the tactics available to you, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, sometimes deceptive, you will receive an award for all-around talent. Release the [ALT] key or right click with the mouse to leave view cone mode. Holding down the [ALT] key includes all enemies, whether hidden or visible. If an enemy discovers you, you can see his/her status by looking at the colour of the alarm line or the view cone. Orange means that the enemy is suspicious of you, while red indicates alarm. Pink means that the enemy is under the influence of alcohol or Kate’s powers of seduction. The medal will be added to your collection of medals, which you can see in the Game Menu or the Load and Save Menu. Thus, you can always keep track of how you have solved each particular mission. Placing a View Cone Counter If you are in view cone mode and you left click anywhere on the map, you will place a view cone counter there. The view cone counter will give you information on how many enemies can see this point. Click on the yellow arrows to the left and right of the view cone counter to switch back and forth between enemies who can see the counter. NPC Preferences If you move the mouse over an NPC, you can see his/her preferences. They will appear as a symbol above the NPC’s head: > > > > Mouth: can be seduced by Kate Fly: will fall for Kate’s fainting act Musical Note: is interested in Cooper’s musical watch Glass: likes Sanchez’s Tequila.
