FEDERAL BUDGET WATCH Tuesday March 22nd from 5:00 – 7:00 PM PSAC Office: 2nd Floor – Neal Building, 50 Harbour Drive, St. John’s, NL
St. John’s- The Canadian Labour Congress, in conjunction with the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, the St. John’s & District Labour Council, affiliated unions and a number of community organizations will be holding a “Federal Budget Watch” tomorrow evening -Tuesday March 22ndbeginning at 5:00 pm in the PSAC office, 2nd Floor, Neal Building, 50 Harbour Drive, (next to Fortis Building), St. John’s, NL. Spokespersons will be available at the Budget Watch for comment to the media. The Canadian Labour Congress and its affiliated unions are calling for a budget that stresses retirement security through pension reform, the creation of good jobs for Canada’s 1.5 million unemployed workers, and an investment of additional stimulus money in public services and infrastructure to assist in economic recovery. “Enhanced CPP, OAS and GIS, child care, Employment Insurance supports and rolling back reckless corporate tax cuts would make for a people’s budget,” said NLFL President Lana Payne. “We are not holding our breath, but we are also not going away. We expect governments to be there for people. Instead, what we continue to see is a government that sides with the wealthy and corporate Canada over the rest of Canadians.” On Tuesday March 22nd,representatives from labour and community organizations will gather at the PSAC offices to watch Minister Flaherty deliver the long awaited federal budget, to see if the federal government has listened to and acted upon recommendations that have been sent from unions and community groups. Organizational representatives will be available to respond to the budget. Sandwiches and light snacks will be served. -30For further information contact: Lana Payne – President; NLFL Phone: (709) 743-5343 Email:
