Microphone Selection and Placement 1. Microphone Selection:  Microphones with a USB connection work well with Windows 7. USB microphones have their own builtin driver. Also, the sound quality of the recording is usually much better than your computer’s built-in microphone. USB Connector  Headset microphones make it easier to keep the mouthpiece in the same position throughout recording. Headset microphones can vary greatly in audio quality. These microphones may have a USB connector or a microphone jack. Microphone and speaker jacks  Microphones with noise-canceling capability produce better quality recordings. 1 2. Microphone Placement: NO 5 cm. a. Place the microphone about 5 cm from your mouth so you are speaking above the microphone rather than into it. b. Adjust the microphone position until your voice can be recorded clearly with few breaths or mouth noises. c. Follow the instructions for Microphone Set-up (2a_How to create a video using Win7, page 5; 2b_How to create a video using WinXP, pages 5-12) to adjust the microphone volume. Check these settings each time you turn the computer on, to make sure the computer saved your settings. If you use an external microphone (and/or external speakers), it usually works best to attach these external devices to your computer before you turn the computer on.
