In contrast, the Boating Associations of Ohio is a coalition of Ohio marine industry and boat owner groups. Its mission is to represent Ohio boating interests in public policy matters and to advocate for the most beneficial uses of boating funds. Recognizing Ohio is one of the nation’s top states for recreational boating, June has officially been declared “Ohio Goes Boating” Month, and it will call attention to the statewide abundance of opportunities to experience Ohio’s many waterways. By the time you read this, Governor John Kasich is expected to have signed the action of the General Assembly that officially designates this boating month. It’s the result of concerted efforts by the Boating Associations of Ohio to have the House and Senate pass House Bill 84 declaring such a high-profile designation. “We want all Ohioans, and boaters in adjacent states, to know that boating is a very important activity here,” explained BAO executive director, Bryan Ralston. “We rank ninth in the nation in registered pleasure boats with some 440,000-plus vessels. More important, those pleasure boats take over 3.5 million people out on the water every summer. “We are a state rich in waterways,” Ralston continued, “with approximately 99% of Ohio’s residents living within 36 miles of a waterway that can accommodate a powerboat. We have 7,000 miles of lake and river shorelines and over 3.1 million people live within 10 miles of either Lake Erie or the Ohio River. We’ve got it all and this tells everyone how important boating is here.” Ohio boating is big economically, too. For example, more than $5.6 million is paid annually in boat registration and titling fees. Boaters also pay $15.1 million annually in state marine fuel taxes; $11.4 million in sales tax on boat purchases and support Ohio's boating industry that accounts for 26,000 full-time equivalent jobs. In total, then, boating generates an overall economic impact for Ohio estimated at $3.5 billion annually, according to studies by the Great Lakes Commission. Boating activities are overseen by the Ohio Division of Watercraft in the Department of Natural Resources. In its model user-pay, user-benefit structure, the Division of Watercraft is funded solely by Ohio’s boaters through the dedicated Waterway Safety Fund created by the General Assembly in 1955. Black crappie are silvery with large black blotches along their body, while whites are more silvery yet with only a few dark marks. Both are flat sided with large mouths and a general form that is simply pleasing to the eye. In many lakes a 10 incher is a very good fish, but in our big lake they routinely stretch to 12 inches, even 14 or 16 inches of thick-bodied panster that will put a bend in the rod and take plenty of space in a sizable skillet. Each spring when water temperatures begin to approach 60, these lovely fish begin to move into Lake Erie marinas, along shorelines, and patches of brush and drowned timber. By 60 degrees, they're beginning to fan out nests and by 65 they're usually actively spawning. It's prime time for boating fishermen, and whole families buy buckets of emerald shiners and go seeking a cooler full. Even those who don't normally fish often try for crappie, and being plentiful, they're a kids fish just as attractive as bluegills, but usually a good deal bigger. Why the attraction? That's hard to say, but one reason is that they require little equipment and are easy to fish for. Some favor long cane poles that will allow the angler to lift his rig almost straight up and down and avoid hookups in fallen timber. They'll dab their minnow here, leave it for a minute or two, then move a bit to there, working all sides of brush, logs, and other obstructions. Whichever the equipment, lines end is almost invariably a No. 6 hook with splitshot a few inches above and a thin pencil float that a fish can pull under with little resistance. Bites are deliberate, and many anglers like that, too. No zipping strikes that will see a customer spitting the hook before you can even pick up the rod. Instead, they tend to bounce the float a time or two, then either gently draw it under or slowly move off with their lunch. Plenty of time to make a move and hoist a silvery flapping fish to your waiting hand. Lake Erie marinas can be magnets for spring spawning crappie, and those who get permission can make a fine haul in the best of them. The technique here is much the same - adjust the float until it's riding about 6 inches above the mud, then ease quietly along dabbing the shiner on all sides of every piling. They're still in loose schools at first, so 20 pilings might produce nothing, then one a half dozen fine fish. You can improve on this tactic and save time in rebaiting by using a couple of little 1/8 or 1/16 ounce jigs with twister tails. White and pink are the best colors and I like to tie one on lines end and a second on a short side line about 8 inches above. Bait the hooks with a waxworm then jig them slowly up and down around any piling or obstruction. This rig will not only produce crappie, but bluegills, perch, smallmouth bass, even channel cats if they're present. Once temperatures are right and they begin actively spawning, most will abandon the pilings and seek out shorelines that have a proper mix of sand, gravel, and small stones. Males will sweep out a nest with their tails, removing the mud, and wait for females. Typically, only a few sections of shoreline will have proper conditions, but when you find one that holds spawning crappie, they'll return to the same stretch year after year. These are pearls of real value to crappie hunters, places to be guarded with silence and mentioned to no one. A small boat can make a big difference to Erie crappie fishermen. Some years ago I launched a light canoe on Middle Harbor by tugging it over the grass, then paddled out to a lovely section of shoreline on the far side. That section had some excellent bits of wood and brush along its shore, and I knew I was in luck when I worked the first fallen log. The float sank almost immediately, and I lifted into a heavy crappie that was at least 14 inches of lovely, flapping silver. I caught at least 25 fine fish along that stretch of shore, took them home and cleaned the lot, then had a fish fry large enough to invite friends. I was back next year, apparently too early, caught only a few channel cats, and repeated the experience the following year. Then next spring I hit the proper time again and filled a heavy stringer. Hit or miss. East and West Harbor will produce at the proper time too, especially East which has lots of shorelines with good cover, perfect places to dab a minnow or jig. And I've found a few marinas along Catawba Island and Marblehead that produce excellent catches when fish are in and spawning. And other places from Huron to Vermillion have their hotspots. It's the best game in town, this early spring crappie hunting, and the patient will hit a real jackpot sooner or later. MAB 5310 E. Port Clinton Eastern Rd. JUNE 2017 [ MID-AMERICA BOATING ] 12 Waves & Currents Clean boaters make for clean waterways By Halle Watson It is no surprise that most boaters want to help the waterways however they can. When lakes and rivers become polluted, they are unfit for recreation and boaters can’t enjoy the water. And if things like algal blooms and invasive species are killing off the fish, there are less fish for anglers to catch. Overall, most boaters agree that if they want to continue enjoying the water, they must be environmentally conscious. Now, thanks to the Clean Boater program, there is finally a way to commit to making a difference. The Clean Boater program started as an offshoot of the Clean Marina program. Marinas who provided recycling bins, had spill kits on the docks and made more ecofriendly changes were dubbed “clean” marinas. Now, boaters can earn the same validation. There are simple, small ways that boaters can make a big difference on their waterways and the Clean Boaters program lays it out in simple terms. Lisa Buie, the marina facility manager for Cleveland Metroparks, says that, “Boaters want to help, they just need to know what they can do.” The Clean Boater program does just that: helps boaters eliminate algal blooms, prevent oil spillage, and stop invasive species from multiplying. Invasive species are a serious threat to the natural systems of rivers and lakes. For example, the spiny European water flea may sound like a minor problem, but it was introduced into Lake Erie and has no natural predators. They eat other small zooplankton, cutting off the food supply for newlyhatched fish. Also, since these fleas are “spiny,” baby fish (fry) usually cannot swallow them. This causes many baby fish to die of starvation. Invasive species = less fish and more problems. It’s just that simple. The Clean Boaters program encourages boaters to drain all of the water from their boats, clean and dry all fishing gear, and empty bait buckets on land. These things ensure that invasive species— such as the spiny European water flea—cannot spread any further. But while it impacted attendance, the show was a selling success for dealers who had put more than 100 boats on display. “This really taught us that inclement weather proves that the attendees on these days have a purpose for being at the show,” noted Tom Mack of South Shore Marine (Pursuit, Regal, Grady White, Back Cover, Sabre). “They were not just seeking an activity on a nice day. They came to consider buying a boat. So, our conversations were mostly serious, we could spend a lot of time with them and it all resulted in 4 sales during the weekend. “In addition,” Mack continued, “we were able to do some great sea trials that sold our brands on how well their hull designs will perform in tough conditions. Normally held in good weather, the cool rain didn’t stop the fun that takes place each year. “I think everyone had a good time with activities like our wine tasting party and two craft beer events,” said show manager Bryan Ralston. “and our entertainment tent rocked with the music of singer-songwriter Steve Brownell, a popular summer act at Put-In-Bay.” While the show featured a wide variety of boats ranging from inflatables to center consoles, this expo’s trademark is the many large cruisers that can only be displayed at an in-water event. For example, the premiere display of Galeon Yachts by MarineMax; the Prestige Yacht shown by Sima Marine; Skipper Bud’s flagship Cruisers Yachts 54’ and 48’ and Tiara Yachts 44Q and 39, to cite just a few in the fleet docked in the CIC marina. Is (are) the propeller(s) on my boat sized correctly? Are the vibrations I feel normal to every boating experience? Is my boat using more gas than it should? Is (are) the engine(s) producing the correct RPMs? If you are uncertain about the correct answers to the above questions, you’re not alone. The best way to tell if your propeller(s) is (are) sized correctly is to run your boat at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) and compare the RPMs to the boat/engine manufacture specifications. If the RPMs are within the specifications then your propeller(s) is (are) probably sized, but if your RPMs fall outside of the specifications then a “tune-up” or even a pitch change may be necessary. Propellers do lose pitch over time. Considerable engine load is required to produce the amount of thrust your propeller(s) must deliver to get your boat up on plane. If your engine(s) is (are) running at too high or too low RPMs, your boat may be consuming larger amounts of fuel than necessary. Just as the tires on your car need to be balanced periodically to reduce vibrations, the same goes for your boat’s propeller(s). Vibrations on a boat are not normal and could indicate your propeller(s) is (are) out of pitch, blades are not balanced, or there is an issue with tracking or face camber. NorthCoast Prop Tech utilizes Prop Scan (a computerized propeller measuring system) to measure propeller pitch to 1/1,000 of an inch and scan the face camber and section shape. For most inboard propellers, they measure a minimum of 6 radii and 18 local areas on each blade to determine local pitch, section pitch, blade pitch, and propeller pitch. This allows them to accurately isolate the problem areas and correct them. They can electronically “see” inaccuracies in face camber and section shape (undetectable by the naked eye) that are important to the propeller’s performance. This allows them to correct inconsistencies that cause vibration and slippage. Inboard/outboard propellers are “tuned” to 3 radii using wellestablished guidelines to achieve the best overall performance. Some boaters might say, “I haven’t hit anything, and my props look fine… there are no dings or bends in the blades.” The question is – are they sure? Feel free to come into NorthCoast Prop Tech’s shop [with your propeller(s)] for a free propeller scan and analysis. They’ll let you know if all’s well or show you specific areas that might need attention. They also straighten shafts, struts, rudders, have in-house welding capabilities, and can assist with any new propeller purchases. Further, they can also provide assistance with any other running gear needs you might have. Getting your propeller(s) properly “tuned” will increase performance, increase speed, reduce fuel consumption, eliminate propeller-induced vibrations, and help to synchronize multiple engines. (617) Toledo Yacht Club hosts 94th Invitational Mills Trophy Race on June 9 The Toledo Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club will host the 94th running of the Mills Trophy Race on Friday, June 9, 2017. The race from the Toledo Harbor Light to Put-in-Bay will be sailed on one of three courses depending on the entrant's class. The first of an anticipated fifteen classes will start at 5 PM with the final class starting by 6:15 PM. Depending upon the wind conditions, the first boats will cross the finish line in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Mills Trophy Course (67.8 nm) is for Multi-hulls, PHRF 162 and below and any higher rated boats racing for the Mills Trophy. The President’s Trophy Course (37.6 nm) is for all JAM classes, Double-handed, PHRF 165 and above, and Cruising Classes. The Governor’s Cup Course (52.6 nm) is a shorter option for PHRF 162 and faster. The Mills Trophy Race, first held in 1907, is one of the oldest sailing events on the Great Lakes. Commodore Merrill B. Mills of Detroit donated the trophy "for the purpose of encouraging proficiency in the art of navigation upon the Great Lakes by means of popular contests in yachting." Although the first race attracted only four starters, over the past 30 years the Mills Trophy Race has become one of the most popular yacht races on the Lakes. In addition to the sailing, the Mills Trophy Race will include a full schedule of social activities. The week kicks off on Friday, June 2 with a reception for the Mills Masters, a fraternity of sailors who have competed in 25 or more Mills Trophy Races. A banquet at Toledo Yacht Club on the Wednesday preceding the race honors the winners of the 2016 race. On Thursday skippers, crew, TYC members and other well-wishers will gather at the Club to enjoy an evening of refreshments, dancing and boat watching. The traditional cannon salute will welcome all the arriving boats. After the race, festivities will resume on Saturday at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, with sailors sharing their race experiences at the hospitality tent. I am fortunate enough to have such a generous family that my husband and I do not have to purchase our own boat to enjoy beautiful Lake Erie. Quite frankly, I do not know if I would be comfortable driving one, and my husband never grew up boating, so lucky for us we get to go boating with my parents whenever we would like! My parents are always up for a relaxing day on the water, and so am I (although now with three kids aged three and under, I’m not sure how relaxing it will be ☺). Boating safety reviews By Capt. Fred Davis As a long-time member of BWI (Boating Writers International) and contributor for many publications over a span of twenty-seven years, I have earned the title of “Boating Safety Advocate.” During my years of writing I always encourage readers to recognize the benefits of adopting boating safety practices – particularly the use of PFD’s which are critical safety products. Because of advancement in designs, it is not unusual to see an entire family displayed, including their pets, wearing life jackets in magazine layouts. I have tested the new-style, inflatable PFD’s and worked with UL (Underwriters Laboratory) and various manufacturers to encourage current design revisions. Improvements have resulted in greater comfort wearing them while underway on your boat or floating in the water. One of the most innovative and user friendly is Survitecgroup’s Crewfit 35 Sport. It is a USCG Type V/III approved lifejacket that provides 35 lbs. of buoyancy when inflated and a center buckle adjuster. The Crewfit 35 features automatic inflation with a manual backup (pull cord and oral inflator tube). Inflation is initiated when the jacket is submerged in water, minimizing risk of accidental inflation, or premature inflation due to rain or sea spray. The fusion 3D design offers a flexible, contoured fit that flexes and sculpts to your shape. The form-fitting neckline sits off your neck eliminating fatigue and optimizing freedom of movement. When inflated, a unique chin support on the bladder tilts your head back keeping your airway clear. The manufacturer recommends visual inspection for leaks or tears every few months and service of the automatic inflator yearly. Rearming kits are sold separately. Another critical safety product required on all but the smallest vessels are flares. Pyrotechnic flares must be carried on all seagoing commercial or pleasure vessels of 13.7 metres in length and over. A nonpyrotechnic device package is currently offered as an alternative to pyrotechnic flares. It is described as an Electronic Visual Distress Signal (EVDS). The package contains an orange distress flag measuring 3 X 3 foot with a black square and ball that bears USCG approval good choice for those who often have children on board their vessel and have concerns regarding their safety. As an alternative to traditional pyrotechnic flares, the S-O-S Distress #46CFR160-072 as a day marker. The electric S-O-S Distress Light with an intensity of at least 500 candela that last at least 2 minutes has met USCG certification requirements in 46 CFR 161 for an electric light. The Coast Guard 33 CFR 175 allows a light certified under 46 CFR 161 to be used as a night-time distress signal in lieu of flares. Even now, manufacturers are creating hybrid boats for fishing and cruising, for sport and speed, for rough water and luxury. It really is incredible the amount of versatility that is being displayed in new boat layouts. Furthermore, some custom boat manufacturers can even design one off models specific to your needs as a boater. How cool is that!? I truly feel there is no better time to get into the hobby of boating because of all of the different options available to the market. Have you often considered purchasing your own boat to have the freedom of cruising the lakes and rivers whenever you want? Are you stuck as to where to start your search in finding the proper boat for your needs? My recommendation is to attend a few summer boat shows and just snoop around. Ask numerous questions of other boaters, dealers and marina owners to really seek out what you think is best for you and your family. One of the best qualities most boaters share is their willingness to help and offer advice in the world of boating. Over the years my parent’s evolution of boat requirements has changed drastically, as will yours. So the key to all of this is to figure out, what floats your boat? What makes you most happy when out on the water – water sport, fishing, speed, cruising, luxury, sailing etc? Prioritize your wants versus needs when it comes to what you desire in a boat and begin your search. Now is the time to make joy a priority. Happy Boating, I hope to see you on the water! MAB Sandusky Yacht Club 23 Light never expires which solves the problem of flare disposal. It is hand-held, tethered or hoisted aloft. It will operate for 60 hours, on 3 C-cell alkaline batteries, compared to traditional flares that last only minutes and can cause damage and injuries. My salvage and towing company worked with Coast Guard and Sheriff’s marine personnel on many search and rescue cases off the east coastline of Lake Huron. I have mixed opinions regarding the value of the new distress option. I have located vessels that had deployed all their flares without attracting help. A bright light lifted aloft after the traditional flares were all used would have brought faster results. On the other hand, I have searched along a shoreline with numerous flashing lights in the background which would perhaps prohibit isolating one flashing light. In my opinion, both types of VDS would be the best option. It should be remembered, pyrotechnic flares will reach a greater height and display a greater range. Once you shoot off all your flares, the light would be great as a back-up. Your flares may have been sighted and help dispatched but having the distress light to guide them when they reach the area would be most helpful. Another great advantage of the EVDS is that it presents no danger if youngsters find it. The distress light should not be used as a substitute but an adjacent to your traditional flare kit. Over the next few years, as more vessels use the light, and it becomes better known, the benefits of its use will increase.
