Description and Uses The Viking Electric Hammer Mill is an easy to use hammer mill capable of grinding several types of grains. The mill has hardened-steel hammer blades that are mounted directly on the motor shaft, which rotates at a maximum speed of 3600 rpm to convert grain kernels into uniformly sized particles. The desired particle size is adjusted through the use of interchangeable perforated screens with pore sizes ranging from 1/16" to ½.” The mill has a 9"-diameter hopper and is mounted on a frame with adequate storage to accommodate three different perforated-screen sizes. The screens control the flow rate through the mill and thus particle size. Power Specifications Motor: Single-phase Power: 1 HP Voltage/Amperage: 230V/7.0A Speed/Frequency: 3600 rpm @ 60 Hz. Grinding Capacity: 115-700 lb/hr (50-300 Kg/hr) depending on grain and screen size Potential Hazards and Safety Precautions High Voltage/Possible Electric Shock (230-V) •• Make sure that the wall outlet receptacle is properly wired and grounded, and matches the instrument’s power cord and plug. •• Make sure the area around the outlet, floor and your hands are completely dry when plugging or unplugging the electrical cord to/from the outlet. Moving Parts/Entanglement of Extremities, Hair, Jewelry or Clothing •• Make sure to secure long hair and any loose clothing or jewelry before operating the machine. •• Keep hands, arms, and extremities away from the hopper, discharge chute, and moving parts at all times or severe injury may occur! •• Make sure the mill door is closed and secured with the door-lock pins before operation. •• Wait at least 15 sec after the mill has stopped before unplugging the mill and opening the mill door for cleaning and sample recovery. Flying Debris/Potential Eye Damage •• Always use proper personal protective equipment, including safety glasses or goggles, at all times while operating the hammer mill. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF (Down) position and that the mill is unplugged. 2. Remove one of the door lock pins by pulling it up and out of the hinge (see Figure 1). Note: The door lock pins may be difficult to remove by hand. Safety Switch Door Lock Pin Drive Motor 3. Open the mill door by swinging it toward the hinged side. 4. Carefully rotate the existing screen counter-clockwise to release and remove it from the mill (see Figure 2). 5. Insert the new screen with the holding tabs up. Carefully rotate the screen clockwise so that the tabs hold it in place (see Figure 2). 6. Close the mill door, and re-insert the door lock pin into the hinge. Note: The lock pin may be difficult to insert. Ensure that the pin is inserted completely into the hinge before progressing further. The Viking Hammer Mill brochure (filed in the pilot plant office, 1955 Food Sciences Building) provides a general description of the hammer mill, specification information, grinding capacities for a variety of grains, and a complete list of parts. Please be sure to completely read the brochure before operating the mill. 2. Be sure to acquire all required training, including sitespecific and machine training directly from the pilot plant manager, before operating the mill. 3. Be sure to wear all required personal protective equipment as listed in this Standard Operating Procedure. 4. Ensure the mill door is closed and that both door lock pins are completely in place (refer to Figures 1 and 2). Note: The mill is equipped with a safety shut off switch so that it will not run if the door is open. However, the mill can still run if the door is closed, but not secured by the door lock pins. Carefully and safely plug the mill in to a 220-V wall socket. Note: Make sure the area around the outlet, floor and your hands are completely dry when plugging or unplugging the electrical cord to/ from the outlet. 6. Turn the power switch to the ON (Up) position (refer to Figure 1). This will start the mill. 7. Place a collection vessel below the discharge chute (refer to Figure 2). After the collection vessel is in place, pour the grain to be milled into the hopper. Note: If the mill is not on before you add the grain into the hopper, the grain will fall straight into the collection vessel without being milled. If the grain becomes stuck in the hopper, rotate the manual feed knob to allow the grain to flow freely into the mill (see Figure 3): 8. Once an effective feed rate is established, continue adding grain into the hopper until the grain is exhausted. 9. When your milling run is complete, turn the power switch to the OFF (Down) position (refer to Figure 1). Carefully and safely unplug the mill from the wall socket. Note: Make sure the area around the outlet, floor and your hands are completely dry when plugging or unplugging the electrical cord to/from the outlet. 10. Allow 15 seconds for the rotating blades in the mill’s grinding chamber to stop spinning. Note: Never open the mill door while the rotating blades are still spinning, as this can cause serious injury! 11. Once the mill has completely stopped, remove the collection vessel from beneath the discharge chute. 12. Report any operational difficulties to the pilot plant manager. 13. Initiate clean-up procedures. Clean-up Procedures 1. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF (Down) position, and that the mill is safely unplugged. Note: Make sure the area around the outlet, floor and your hands are completely dry when plugging or unplugging the electrical cord to/from the outlet. 2. Once the mill is safely unplugged, remove one of the door lock pins by pulling it up and out of the hinge. Note: The door lock pins may be difficult to remove by hand. 3. Open the mill door by swinging it toward the hinged side. 4. Remove the screen from within the mill (see “Operation: Changing Screens” for instructions on how the remove the screen). 5. Using a brush, remove all grain-particle debris from the screen, hopper, rubber feeder wheel, inside the mill door and shroud, and from the discharge chute. 6. Remove all debris from the floor and surrounding work area. 7. Dispose of all collected debris in a trash can. 5 8. Using a pressurized air hose, remove excess dust from all parts of the hammer mill, screens, and portable frame. 9. Sweep the floor to remove all accumulated dust from the work area. Lubrication Port 10. Initiate check-out procedures by having the hammer mill and the surrounding work area inspected by the pilot plant manager prior to departing. Machine Care and Maintenance •• Inspect the machine after every use for any broken parts. Report any broken parts or operational difficulties to the pilot plant manager, who performs all final inspections. Figure 4: Lubrication Port •• Frequent lubrication is important in keeping the Viking Hammer Mill running smoothly. There are two lubrication ports on the motor (see Figure 4). Regular lubrication of moving parts should be performed by the pilot plant manager or a trained service technician. Accessories The Viking Hammer Mill comes equipped with four (4) interchangeable perforated screens: one 15"-diameter screen with 1/16" pores, two 15"-diameter screens with 3/16" pores, and one 15"-diameter screen with ½" pores. 6 Figure 5: Three 15"-Diameter Perforated Screens
