AQUAMATICS MK10 SERIES IONISER Code Description PAMK10 MK10 Series Ioniser Control Unit complete with Flow Cell and Barrel Unions 40mm or 50mm This unit is mainly used in commercial applications, and for water volumes between 200,000 and 500,000 litres. It comprises 8 electrodes and will ionise 50,000 litres per hour. A unique conductor ring pairs the electrodes alternately to ensure a continuous flow of current over each surface. INSTALLATION COPPER & SILVER IONIC WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM HOW IT WORKS The ionic water purifier consists of two main parts, a control box and pairs of rods or electrodes. These electrodes are specially manufactured form an alloy of pure copper and silver metals. They are installed in a special electrode housing assembly or “flow cell” according to the diagram and linked together so that they are electrically alternately positive and negative. They are connected to the control box and to each other via ring terminals When water passes between the electrodes an electric current is able to flow through the water and generates positively charged copper and silver ions. Some of these ions do not reach the negatively charged electrodes but are carried into the pool where they are dispersed throughout the water. When Aquabrite is added to the pool these ions become activated and kill the algae and bacteria in the water. Aquabrite slowly releases oxygen into the water over a period of several days. MOUNTING THE CONTROL CENTRE The position of the pool pump and the power supply will determine where the control centre may be installed. Use a vertical surface under suitable cover. The control centre must not be installed outside or in direct sunlight. If this is impractical, the cable, which supplies the electrodes, may be extended by up to 20 meters using good quality cable. The piggy-back plug must be replaced if an extension cord is used, for safety reasons. The power supply lead to the control centre is fitted with a piggy-back mains plug. The pool pump should be plugged into the back of it for correction operation. The control centre must not be powered unless the pool pump is also running so they must share the same time-clock controlled power supply. The timer built in the control centre is a count-down timer and is reset each time the filtration system is switched on by the time clock. For example: When set for 3 HOURS the control centre will operate for 3 hours then shut down for the rest of the filtration cycle. On commencement of each filter cycle thereafter the operation will be repeated until the setting is changed. SETTING THE CONTROLS To check the timer setting press the TIME SET button once. The LED opposite one of the time positions will be illuminated. To change the timer setting press the TIME SET button and hold pressed until the LED begins flashing. Release and press repeatedly until the LED next to the desired time is illuminated. Continuous operation is indicated by all LEDS flashing. The select sequence is “CONTINUOUS” 12 HOURS’ 6 HOURS’ 3 HOURS’ 1 1/2HOURS’ 3/4HOUR “CONTINUOUS” etc. To set the new selected time press “NORMAL” CURRENT SET is normally set on 100% unless a unit is shared between two systems such as between a pool and a spa for example. Test is used to check that normal polarity reversal is taking place across the electrodes. This evens the wear on the electrodes and keeps them clean of calcium deposits. Press NORMAL to revert to normal display. NORMAL DISPLAY (LED = light emitting diode) Polarity: only one LED on at a time but alternate every few minutes. Continuity: LED flashes approx. once per second when circuit is complete. Conductivity: continuously on when enough ionising current is flowing. Freshly filled pools may not have enough conductivity and 10Kg of calcium chloride should be added per 50, 000 litres of pool water. The pH should be adjusted between 7.0 and 7.4 for optimum conditions. Aquabrite should be maintained to give a reading greater than 2 on the DPD “chlorine scale”, after 15 minutes waiting time. RA IN BO W PO O L PR O DU CT S PT Y LT D TO SELECT THE OPERATING TIME CONTROL SETTINGS FOR THE MK10 AQUAMATICS IONIC WATER PURIFIER AQUABRITE SYSTEM 1. Estimate the approximate volume of the pool in LITRES (1 cubic metre is 1000 litres). 2. Measure the current reading on display in AMPS. 3. Apply the formula below: THE NUMBER OF HOURS/DAY REQUIRED = 1.5 X Volume of pool in litres Current reading X 100, 000 4. Measure the copper concentration in the pool water using the test kit provided. If the copper reading is higher than 0.6 ppm (nominally the upper limit required) then select the next LOWER time setting. If the copper reading is lower than any discernable colour then calculate the hours as in 1 to 3 above. In addition check the pH of the pool water. The pH should not exceed 7.4 CHLORINE STABILISER MUST NOT BE ADDED TO AN AQUABRITE POOL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE OR ROTATE THE ELECTRODES UNLESS THE POWER HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED. THE UNIT HAS AN AUTOMATIC CURRENT LIMIT CIRCUIT WHICH OPERATES IN THE EVENT OF A SHORT CIRCUIT AT THE ELECTRODES. THIS CAN HAPPEN IF CHEMICALS ARE ADDED VIA THE SKIMMER OR THE CONDUCTIVITY OF THE WATER HAS EXCEEDED THE NORMAL OPERATING LIMITS FOR A FRESH-WATER SYSTEM. AUTO CURRENT LIMIT IS INDICATED ON THE FRONT PANEL BY THE LED NEXT TO THE 3/4HR OR 20% SETTING POSITION BEING ILLUMINATED. THE LCD WILL INDICATE 0.00 AMPS WHILE THE CONDITION EXISTS. REFER ANY TECHNICAL PROBLEMS TO POOL AQUAMATICS. DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY ELECTRICAL REPAIRS. THERE ARE NO USER – SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE THE AQUAMATICS AQUABRITE SYSTEM START – UP AND RUNNING PROCEDURE START UP (newly filled pools) 1. Fill the pool to the top of the skimmer box then add either 1Kg Calcium Hypochlorite or 6L Sodium Hypochlorite. Then add all chemicals slowly through the skimmer to prevent stains. 2. Adjust the total alkalinity (T.A) to within the range 80 – 120 mg/L or ppm (as Ca CO3)*¹ (1 Kg of bi-carb per day for every 10, 000 litres of pool water). This range should not be 60 ppm for painted or fibreglass pools. 3. Adjust the total hardness (T.H) within the range 100 – 250 max mg/L or ppm (as Ca CO3)*² 4. Run the pool pump continuously in Filter mode for 12 hours. 5. Backwash the filter and adjust the water level in the pool to half-way up the skimmer plate. Adjust the pool pH to within the range 6.8 – 7.0 for fibreglass lining and 7.0 - 7.4 for all others. 6. Add Ionic Starter Kit followed by 1 Kg pack of Aquabrite. Plug in Ionic Water Purification System with the pool pump plugged into the piggy-back plug and operate according to the following instructions… RUNNING PROCEDURE • Operate the pool pump for 1 hour per day for each 10, 000L (Mk 5) of water and 20, 000L per hour for the Mk 9. Ensuring that the Ionic Water Purifier can operate for that period of time. This is the summer running time. For winter, use third of the summer settings. • It is very important to maintain the pH of the pool water within the range 7.0 – 7.4 during this period. If the pH rises above 7.4 dilute acid must be added to the pool to bring the pool water back to the working range pH 7.0 – 7.4 (Most Important). • Measure the copper concentration (using the test kit provided) on a weekly basis. • Measure the Aquabrite concentration (using a DPD test kit) on weekly basis. • The demand for Aquabrite varies from pools to pool and it is necessary to measure the Aquabrite in the water by using DPD #1 tablet test kit (like measure chlorine) except that full colour development takes 15 minutes. Maintain a level of Aquabrite, which produces a reading of not less than 2 ppm on the chlorine scale. • It is advisable to brush the walls to help with the curing of the pool surface. A suction cleaner will aid this procedure. This applies to surfaces such as pebbles, quartz on and marblesheen. It is not necessary with tiled, painted or fibreglass as these are less reactive surfaces and do not leach calcium at the same high rate. Note From time to time check the condition of the electrodes especially near the end of their expected life. They will form mud like coasting on the surface. This is normal – Do not clean off unless the electrodes have been allowed to dry out or the power supply has been disconnected for several weeks. *¹ To increase T.A. by 100 ppm add 170 grams of sodium bicarbonate (buffer) per 1000L of water **To increase T.H. by 100 ppm add 150 grams of calcium chloride dihydrate per 1000L of water OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR AQUABRITE SYSTEM 1. DO NOT ALLOW THE pH OF THE WATER TO RISE ABOVE 7.4 (COPPER WILL NOT BE IN AN ACTIVE FORM). 2. DO NOT THROW UNDISSOLVED CHEMICALS INTO THE POOLS (STAINING OF THE POOL SURGACES MAY OCCUR). 3. DO NOT USE ANY COMPOUNDS WHICH CONTAIN BROMINE (BROMINE REMOVES SILVER FROM WATER). 4. DO NOT USE ANY COMPOUNDS WHICH CONTAIN ALUM (ALUM REMOVES COPPER FROM WATER) 5. DO NOT USE ANY COMPOUNDS WHICH CONTAIN SODA ASH (SODIUM CARBONATE) & NEVER USE CAUSTIC SODA (DISCOLOURATION OF THE INTERNAL POOL SURFACES MAY OCCUR). 6. CHECK THE CONCENTRATION OF COPPER (USING THE COPPER TEST KIT) ONCE A WEEK AND AFTER PERIODS OF RAIN. 7. CHECK THE CONCENTRATION OF AQUABRITE (USING THE DPD TEST KIT) – ONCE A WEEK & ADJUST AS NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN THE READING ABOVE 2 ON THE CHLORINE SCALE (AFTER 15 MINUTES USING A DPD #1 TABLET). 8. MAINTAIN A TOTAL ALKALINITY (T.A.) READING ABOVE 80 PPM BUT NOT EXCEEDING 120PPM (USE SODIUM BICARBONATE) CHECK MONTHLY. 9. MAINTAIN A CALCIUM HARNESS (C.H. LEVEL ABOVE 100 PPM BUT NOT EXCEEDING 250 PPM) (USE CALCIUM CHLORIDE) CHECK MONTHLY. 10. REMOVE RUBBISH FROM THE SKIMMER BOX AND HAIR & LINT FILTERS DAILY AND CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE IONIC ELECTRODES MONTHLY. 11. THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT REQUIRE POOL STABILISER. 12. AVOID THE USE OF CHELATING AGENTS. ITEM DESIRED VALUE pH Paint, Fibreglass 6.8 - 7.0 Pebble, Tile, Quartz on 7.2-7.4 max • Only correct the pH 24 hours after the T.A. (as below) is balanced. • Add 500g (maximum per day) of dry acid mixed in a plastic watering can, to the surface of the pool with the filter pump running. • Check the pH the following day (a false reading my be obtained if done on the same day) Fill the large tube with pool water to the pH line on the tube. Add 1 drop of solution (antichlor) #4, swirl to mix. Add 5 drops of solution (phenyl red) #2, again, swirl to mix. Read the pH by comparing the colour in the tube against the scale of colours representing pH adjacent to the tube. Aquabrite Pink • Use the small test tube, fill to the top. • Add a DPD #1 tablet and shake to dissolve, and then leave it for 15 minutes before reading the colour against the chlorine scale (reacts faster with warmer water at spa water temperature). • Colour should be pink, not yellow or colourless. If the colour is less than 2 (on the chlorine scale) then add a 1 Kg pack of AQUABRITE to each 50, 000L of pool water. Copper Test Yellow • This test is normally only required once a month. • Collect a sample of pool water in the empty tube of Aquamatics Copper Test Kit provided. • Add 10 drops of copper reagent. • Leave for 2 minutes before reading the colour. • Check the colour that must nit be darker d1an the highest reading on the colour card in the test kit. • Should the colour be darker than the highest reading on the colour card, the pool is being over-ionised and the ionic water purifier should be turned off until the copper reading drops to within the normal operating range. Measure the copper every week until the system settles down. Generally, operate the Ionic Water Purifier for 1 Hour per day for every 10,000L of water in the pool. ITEM DESIRED VALUE Total Alkalinity Paint, Fibreglass 60ppm Pebble, Tile, Quartz on 100 - 120 ppm • This is a measurement of bicarbonate, (T.A.), in parts per million (ppm). • Collect a sample of pool water in the larger test tube and fill to the lower line marked on the tube. • Add 2 drops of blue dye marked #1, then add dropwise the clear solution marked #3, counting the number of drops it takes until the blue colour disappears (10 – 12 drops indicates 100 to 120 ppm). • For every drop short of 12 drops, add 1 Kg of bicarbonate (maximum per day) slowly through skimmer box. DISPLAY LAMP INFORMATION NORMAL DISPLAY POLARITY CHANGE lamps alternate every 2 minutes. CONTINUITY lamp flashes once per second. CONDUCTIVITY lamp must be on continuously. OVER RANGE lamp must not be on unless chemicals have just been added. WATER CONDUCTIVITY TOO LOW Check that “current set” is set to maximum 300MA. The mineral concentration of the pool water is LOW. Add calcium chloride at 1.5 Kg per 10,000 litres of water. Check the Total Alkalinity and adjust by adding sodium bicarbonate (Buffer), 1 Kg/day max. The CONDUCTIVITY lamp should be on after addition of the above chemicals. DISPLAY LAMP INFORMATION CONDUCTIVITY TOO HIGH The mineral content of the water is too high. 1. If the chemicals have just been added to the pool via the skimmer then the above display(s) is normal. Check again after a few minutes. 2. Drain some water from the pool and replace it with fresh water until OVER RANGE lamp turns off. NO IONS ARE PRODUCED WHILE THE OVER RANGE LAMP IS ON. WHEN OVER RANGE LIGHT IS ON THE UNIT HAS SHUT DOWN. CIRCUIT NOT CONTINUOUS CONTINUITY and CONDUCTIVITY lamp off. Check low voltage cables and connectors. Check there is water between electrodes. Electrodes may need replacing.
