1. ALERTS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE START USING THE PRODUCT CAREFULLY READ THIS MANUAL WITH THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS. o Do not allow children or untrained people to use this device. o Whoever uses TRIRIDE should have read this manual. TRIRIDE S.R.L. is not liable for personal wounds or damages deriving from the usage of this product. o There is risk of skidding on wet surfaces or uneven terrain; always control speed and driving style according to the general conditions (weather, terrain and driving ability); never drive at speed towards a fixed object and drive carefully in narrow passages. o In case of a crash it is possible to suffer from injuries in parts of the body that are out of the wheelchair frame profile (e.g. hands, feet). o Always drive using the maximum attention and concentration; in default of that, there is a higher likelihood of losing control of the vehicle and having an accident. Extra care should be taken when driving over 4mph (6 Kmph), which is usually the maximum speed allowed for riding on pavement or bicycle lanes. Driving over the limits can only be done in private areas and is under the sole and total responsibility of the driver. o Always use the wheelchair with TRIRIDE in an appropriate way; for example, avoid driving without using the brakes in presence of obstacles such as curbs, steps or corners. o The performances of a wheelchair powered with TRIRIDE can be affected by the presence of electromagnetic fields, like those emanating form cell phones: it is safer to turn TRIRIDE off when using such devices. o Conversely TRIRIDE could negatively affect the electromagnetic fields used by appliances such as alarm systems.

2. PURPOSE TRIRIDE allows you to transform, easily and quickly, a vast majority of the hand-pushed wheelchairs available on the market into an electric mobility scooter. When coupling TRIRIDE to the manual wheelchair, the front swivelling castors are raised from the ground to increase the load on TRIRIDE’s wheel (which is directly geared to the electric motor) in order to have an efficient traction whilst maintaining the other features of the wheelchair. TRIRIDE belongs to the usage classification of the wheelchair it is linked to, pursuant to the CEI EN 12184 regulations. TRIRIDE abides by the Class B specifications (*), having a range of 50 Km (31 miles), with full charged battery, even surface and a driver’s weight of 75 Kg. Any other use, or improper use could imply dangerous situations. (*) Class B: wheelchairs which are sufficiently compact and manoeuvrable for indoor usage and which
can overcome some obstacles outdoor.

4. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Triride® is a motorised attachment for wheelchairs. It comes from the idea of giving more independence to people who, due to various reasons, cannot walk and are forced to live on a wheelchair and who must rely on their own forces, or someone else’s help for moving around. The Triride line of product has been developed originating from the first prototype its inventor, Gianni Conte, made for himself some time ago. The product is in constant development as the new models, here below described show. The Electronic Control Unit designed at Triride HQ is programmable through a specific software developed in house. This allows having full control of important functions like: power delivery, energy consumption, speed, motor braking, odometer, speedometer, reverse gear, etc. The mechanical parts of these devices are also under constant development in order to offer the maximum driving comfort and safety. This all might not be fully visible, nor easy to describe, but it can be reduced to one single important word: quality.

All models feature the reverse gear. All models have an electronic control unit that supervises the power delivery, the battery charge and consumption and all the activities of the motor and related services. The system for attaching the Triride to the wheelchair is the same for all models. All models have a two-year warranty. The technical specifications may vary without notice.
4.2. General The new (2016) models are mostly based on the TRX-SP design. In the following descriptions, this manual mainly refers to this original model, because, in most cases, its characteristics also apply to the others. Features specific to some new model are described, where necessary.
Here you see the Triride connected to the wheelchair. Due to the compact design and small wheel dimension, Triride adds no more than approximately 40cm to the overall length. This allows the use of the vehicle both outdoor and indoor. The fork’s angle can be set to three different positions, the most vertical of which raises the casters at the maximum height from ground, thus allowing to ride over small steps and surface bumps..
4.3. Battery and Charger When charging the battery, connect the charger plug into the connection port on the battery: remove the plastic protection lid and align the slot on the plug with the dent in the battery’s port.

These three different consoles are mounted on the different models. Note that not all functions are available on all models. All models feature an LCD display where to check all the parameters controlled by the onboard computer.

The new models have 5 software programmable speed levels. They reflect the local road regulations.

6.2. Battery label The label reads: Do not tamper, open, expose to high temperature or flames; do not soak in water or solvents, etc. Only use the original charger specific for Li-ion batteries and appropriate voltage. In case you do not use the battery for long periods, fully charge it and store in a cool and dry place. Charge it every three months (for not less than 2 hours). When the battery’s life is over, dispose it at a specialised location.

7. PREPARING FOR USE
7.1. Packaging, transport, delivery TRIRIDE is delivered in a cardboard box that protects it from weather and dust. TRIRIDE must be transported by the user with the same care as the shipping packaging, in order to protect it from the elements. When receiving TRIRIDE, check the integrity of the packaging. Report comments (if any) in the accompanying documentation and notify the delivery company. Open the package and check for any damage to your TRIRIDE; report any anomalies (if any) into the documentation.
7.2. Assembling TRIRIDE is delivered disassembled as follows (you need 4, 5 and 6 mm Allen keys):
n.1 main frame section, including wheel, control unit, headstock and handlebar. Adjust the stem angle to your needs and tighten the Allen screw (5mm) to lock it. Also adjust the handlebar as to make it form exactly a right angle with the wheel and tighten the relevant Allen screws (5mm).

Note: see appendix B about how mounting the clamps to the wheelchair frame, Adjustment of connecting arms: unscrew the 4 Allen screws with a 4mm Allen key; adjust the width according to the wheelchair frame; tighten the Allen screws.

Insert the tilting element into the flange and lock it with the pivot screw.

Lock it inserting the “tilting screw pin” into the relevant hole and tightening it rotating the knob clockwise.

Locking Triride to the wheelchair: insert the connection arms into the coupling devices (clamps previously mounted on wheelchair frame à see Appendix B) and lock them rotating the knob-screw clockwise.
Tilt locking: insert the “spring cotter pin” in either one of the three holes and tight the fixing knob-screw, in order to adjust the tilt angle.

Battery mounting: put the battery into its stand so that the electric leads match those in the cradle. Then turn the locking key until the battery clicks-in. Now turn the battery on, pressing switch button: the four LEDs light up and you are ready to go with your Triride.

7.3. Usage of TRIRIDE 7.3.1 Handlebar adjustment and frame tilt Handlebar adjustment: unscrew the Allen screws (5mm key) shown in the picture; adjust the height and the angle of inclination of the handlebar joint, using the screw in its lower side (see arrow in the picture). Also adjust the handlebar as to make it form exactly a right angle with the wheel and tighten the relevant Allen screws (5mm).

Choice of tilting angle (see figures above): with this mechanism the user can choose how much to rise from the ground the swivelling front casters of the wheelchair, according to the profile of the terrain he or she’s going to ride. This is simply accomplished inserting the cotter pin in the appropriate hole. Changing from hole 1 to hole 3 makes the steering column more vertical, with consequent rising of the casters and reduction of the wheelbase. This produces an increase of the percentage of the overall weight on the steered front wheel thus increasing traction and directionality. (Example: we suggest the use of hole number 3 for uneven surfaces).
7.3.2 Starting and operation All rules and cautions followed using the hand-pushed wheelchair are still valid with TRIRIDE in place.

As you turn the battery on, also the LEDs on the handlebar light up indicating the charge level. Note: in new models this indication is given by the LCD display.

2015 TRX-SP model Driving: push the speed control lever (accelerator) downwards to start moving the vehicle and control the direction with the handlebar like for any scooter. The pressure on the speed lever is proportional to the speed itself. Braking: release the accelerator and pull the brake lever. A sensor disconnects the motor when the brake is engaged. The same sensor activates the energy recovery mechanism that charges the battery during the braking. The switch by the accelerator is intended for possible future use.
2015 TRX-SP model Reverse gear: push and keep the green button and control the speed with the accelerator as per the forward drive. Cruise control: the red button on the lefthand side activates the cruise control: it works by briefly pressing it while the accelerator is at the desired speed position; then release the accelerator and the motor keeps running at the selected speed.

7.3.1 Battery charge Turn the battery off pushing the switch

shown by the red arrow), after removing the cap protecting the socket on the
battery.

Then screw the knurled set collar to the thread on the battery’s socket, in order to have a secure contact.

7.3.2 Guidelines to the usage of lithium batteries • Always recharge your battery, even when you drive for short distances; this will mean: 1. You always have your maximum range. 2. You will have the maximum performance for the control unit and the motor because of the high tension. 3. Battery life is extended: the lithium batteries do not suffer from the “memory effect”, therefore you can charge it also when it’s only partially low. Moreover, using them to fully discharged might damage lithium batteries. That said, the TRIRIDE battery is electronically protected from this problem. • Do not leave the charger connected too long after the light turns green. • Always charge your battery in an airy place, far from inflammable materials. • Do not short the battery leads. • Do not throw the battery into the water. • Do not attempt to open the battery. • Do not put the exhausted batteries in the general waste; rather dispose it into specialised disposal and recycling facilities. • Do not use the battery to power appliances requiring a direct current of more than 18A • Do not leave the battery in the sun or rain for too long. • Should you not use the battery for a long period, remember to charge it at least every two months. • If you notice that the battery is damaged, swells or it leaks liquid or smoke, do not use it for any reason and seek assistance. Please keep the original battery packaging, because it is compliant with the safety requirements for the shipping of batteries. Use this packaging to send a defective battery back to the producer for servicing.
7.4. Handling
When you finish using TRIDE, disassemble it reversing the steps described in chapter 7.2. Always turn-off and detach TRIRIDE before getting in public or private transport. Place TRIRIDE and the wheelchair in the luggage space according to current regulations. Once you have pulled the connecting arms out of the wheelchair, it is possible to re-insert the cotter pin into the tilting element and use the arms like a kickstand for TRIRIDE.

8. MAINTENANCE 8.1. Maintenance and checks • • • • •
Check the tyre pressure at least every two months. The inflating pressure is indicated on the tyre itself. A tyre below the proper pressure limits the ease of movement of the wheelchair. After using TRIRIDE for long distances on uneven terrains check the tightening of the screws of the arms and of the clamps to the wheelchair frame. Every two years contact the producer (Triride S.r.l.), or an authorised assistance centre in order to have brake pads replaced and have a general check-up. Any maintenance or modification work must be performed by authorised personnel only. Any modification in the positioning of the chair main wheels or swivelling castors, might alter the balance of the vehicle and its tipping point. In such cases a repositioning of the coupling devices and the general TRIRIDE mechanical setup is recommended.
8.2. Authorised technical assistance Should you have any technical problem, please contact the producer (Triride S.r.l.), or an authorised assistance centre in your area.
8.3. Cleaning Clean the console, the battery and frame with a non-biological detergent. Use a humid cloth (not wet, to avoid water leaks into the electronics). Clean the wheelchair according to producer’s recommendations.
8.4. Disposal The user is responsible for the disposal of the various components to the appropriate recycling or disposal facilities. Batteries shall be disposed at specific recycling centres.
This product is compliant with the European Directive EU/2002/96/EC. The crossed trash bin symbol indicates that the product, at the end of its life, must not be treated with generic waste, rather disposed in specific facilities specialised in recycling of electronic materials. Please refer to local authorities for further information about recycling options available in your area. Another option is to give it back to the producer when buying a new one.

9. TROUBLESHOOTING Problem

TRIRIDE doesn’t turn on
Strong vibration when driving The console turns on but TRIRIDE doesn’t move
• Check battery charge status à charge if necessary • Check battery positioning (all the way down and turn the key clockwise) • If these two conditions are met, and it still does not turn on, call for assistance • Check the tightness of the screws on the connecting arms and of the two coupling devices on the wheelchair frame • Verify if the connector between the motor and the control unit is in place. If yes, then contact the assistance.
GUARANTEE Guarantee period is 24 months (12 for the battery) from the delivery date of TRIRIDE. In case a part proves to be defective during the guarantee period, the producer, at its option, will be free to decide whether replace or repair it. No damage caused by improper use, negligence, tampering, or wrong maintenance (by nonauthorised personnel), will be eligible for guarantee service. Removing the plate with the machine serial number will void the guarantee.

10.
COMPATIBILITY WITH WHEELCHAIR TYPES
All Triride models use the same attachment system, based on clamps installed one-off on the wheelchair. This system fits most of the wheelchairs on the market, using clamps of different sizes. It is suitable for both rigid and folding wheelchairs that have a metal frame with a free section of about 10cm in its front vertical tubes. Aluminium and its alloys (like ergal, avional), titanium, steel and iron are fit for the purpose of attaching the Triride, positioning the coupling clamps and the connecting arms in the proper position. Exceptions are made only for some wheelchair with swing-away removable footrests, where there is not a long enough free section of the chair’s frame for installing the clamps and still allow the removing of the footrests. In case of wheelchairs with pull-out footrests (mounted on a pivoting frame extension), TRIRIDE coupling devices must not be mounted on that part of frame, rather they should be mounted on the main fixed section of the frame (where the pivoting frame extensions themselves are connected) in order to achieve the best mechanical strength, thus assuring traction and directionality. TRIRIDE is available with different connection devices, their diameter ranges from 19mm to 32mm, so that they can fit to different wheelchair models available on the market. Also in case of frame tubes with an oval section, TRIRIDE has proper connection devices fit to that shape. RECOMMENDATIONS
Installing the clamps: it is of the maximum importance the precision and the accuracy taken when installing the clamps. First because these are an important element of your personal safety; second because a wrong installation can lead to uneasy attaching/detaching of the Triride to the chair; to an uncomfortable ride and to abnormal consumption of some mechanical parts of the chair and the Triride itself. In Appendix B there is an accurate description of the installation process of the clamps. It is highly recommended to have the clamps installed by an authorised reseller/servicing site. Shouldn’t this be possible, please put the maximum attention in reading and carefully following the instructions in Appendix B. Any setup or adjustment of the parameters of the control unit, using the specific software, that have effect on the performance of the electric motor (power, torque, acceleration, reverse gear, motor brake, cruise control, battery dynamic charge, etc.) must only be performed by Triride S.r.l., or authorised resellers and engineers; this software it is not intended for sale. Triride S.r.l. is not liable for any damage that could occur to the device, the users or to third parties due to improper and unauthorised adjustments, modifications, or tampering of the control unit parameters performed by unauthorised personnel. When using the Triride, always keep in mind that it is attached to a wheelchair designed to be hand pushed. Driving in a thoughtless and reckless way can put the chair integrity at risk and, more important, put yourself in serious danger.
