“Inspiration, Vision, Architecture” Lecture by the award-winning British architect and Professor Richard Weston, author of the monograph “Utzon – Inspiration, Vision, Architecture” The lecture will be held in English

From Utzon’s Private Collection to Quirky Characters in Photography One of this auction’s major attractions is a series of pieces from the Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s private art collection. The collection reflects the Danish architect’s exquisite eye for the greatest artists of his time, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger. In 1957 Utzon won the international architectural competition for the construction of the Sydney Opera House. He collaborated on the interior of the opera house with the French architect and artist Le Corbusier, and one of the auction’s undisputed highlights is a tapestry by Le Corbusier from 1960 entitled ”Les dés sont jetés” (The dice are cast) (cat. no. 849). Read more about Utzon’s collection on p. 76. Another giant of art history is the creator of the sculpture ”Conjunction XV”. The sculpture was made in 1970 by the British sculptor Lynn Chadwick during his most productive period, where he, inspired by the Easter Island’s original craftwork, worked with a series of unique abstract sculptures. A Danish couple has owned the sculpture up for auction. In connection with their acquisition of the sculpture Chadwick visited the couple and was thrilled with the location of his sculpture in their garden in Charlottenlund. Chadwick’s career truly took off, when he in 1956 took the Venice Biennale by storm and became the youngest artist ever to win the coveted International Sculpture Prize. Today he is exhibited at leading museums such as MOMA, Tate Gallery and Centre Georges Pompidou (cat. no. 866). Danish art is richly represented at the auction as well - including works by Peter Louis-Jensen, Poul Gernes and Per Kirkeby. In the early 1960s they established the Ex-school, which marked a new direction in Danish art. It was conceived as a radical departure from the established Danish modernism, and the goal was to bring art down to the level of a wider public. At this auction the Ex-school’s contribution consists of two of Louis-Jensen’s collage-like ”Structure Panels” from 1964 (cat. no. 887 and 888), a characteristic composition by Gernes from 1961 (cat. no. 884) and ”The Leopard” by Kirkeby (cat. no. 889). Among the Danish artists you can also find Erik Thommesen with five sculptures and a couple of drawings (e.g. cat. no. 842) as well as Jens Adolf Jerichau with a sketch of his major piece ”Sea Gods” from 1916 (cat. no. 810). The section with art photographs is led by a number of images from Paris by the famous photographer Brassaï. In the early 1930s he set out to portray the French capital’s nightlife outside on the dark streets and inside in the city’s entertainment venues. He photographed criminals, prostitutes, pimps and transvestites, and the photographs were collected in the ground-breaking photography books ”Paris de Nuit” from 1933 and ”The Secret Paris of the Thirties” from 1976 (e.g. cat. no. 1075 and 1076). The quirky and alienated characters were also the artistic epicentre for the younger photographer Diane Arbus, who is represented by a portrait of two transgender people (cat. no. 1107) and a portfolio of 12 of her best photographs (cat. no. 1108). On Friday 29 May at 3 pm in Bredgade 33 our Head of Photography, Christine Almlund, will give a lecture on Brassaï.

b. Svaneke 1884, d. Gudhjem 1966
Bognemark, Winter, Bornholm. Double signed OH 58. Oil on canvas. 61 x 116 cm. "Bognemark" has been the inspiration for many of Oluf Høst's paintings, and the open gate in one of the wings of the farm must be one of the most well depicted gates in history. The artist's return to the farm, however, signifies anything but an unconscious repetition. On the contrary it is the place where the painter's registration of the light and the vibration of colour reaches masterful heights. All in all more than 200 images were painted from the courtyard, all leaving their own impression. The many images testify to Høst's lifelong exploration of the basic element, which the painting grew out of. DKK 200,000-250,000 / € 27,000-33,500

806 ADAM FISCHER CD
b. Frederiksberg 1888, d. Ordrup 1968
"Fransk soldat" (A French Soldier), 1918. Signed A.F. Wood. H. 39 cm. Literature: Poul Uttenreiter: "Adam Fischer", Vor tids kunst no. 20, stylictic variant ill. on the cover. Literature: "København/Paris/Retur: Omkring Ellen og Adam Fischer", ill. p. 30-31. Provenance: Editor Møller Nielsen, Århus Stiftstidende. It was not a given that Adam Fischer (1888-1968) as a sculptor was to occupy a central position in recent Danish art history. The first years of his schooling took place at the Royal Danish Academy’s School of Painting in the period 1908-1913. Yet his attempts with painting were, according to his own opinion, not tremendously successful. That this was the case also had a natural explanation. At the age of 25 Fischer discovered that he was colour blind. This was undeniably an unfortunate diagnosis for a young man who had decided to dedicate himself to painting. Something had to be done and rather than give up on his artistic ambitions Fischer focused on sculptures instead. A defining moment came during his stay in Paris, which he first visited during a study tour in 1913. It was soon clear to Fischer that living in the city of cities for a longer period of time could be a catalyst for his artistic development, and around the time of World War I you could hardly have found a better place. The artistic counter reaction to the horrors of war and the fractured worldview that followed were during these years truly expressed through cubism and the movement away from the naturalistic representation of the shape of things. Fischer worked his way into the new idiom, and he threw himself into the work with the sculptural moulding with an almost scientific approach. Sketches illustrate his preoccupation with the forms’ geometric and proportional conditions. Like his painter colleague, Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Fischer sought perfection and the completed construction of the artwork composed around the golden ratio. “French Soldier” is an exquisite example of this, not only in its simplification of the forms’ natural appearance, but also in the mastering of the sparse use of effects, which add an emotional expression to the sculpture. The sculpture from 1918 is reminiscent of both African mask art, the mythological figures on Easter Island and Modigliani’s almost childlike depiction of his subject: Childlike is here understood as an immediate and pure perception of the subject’s inherent character and its spirit. Besides the sculpture up for auction Fischer created a second copy in limestone, which provides a unique basis for comparison for the different materials’ character: The warm glow of the wood sculpture against the cruder expressions of the stone. Fischer shared his preoccupation with the dynamics of form with the Mexican artist Diego Rivera (18861957), with whom Fischer established a close friendship. The theoretical conversations about the legality of modernist art and the development of Cubism were a catalyst for Fischer’s showdown with the stylistic neatness of neoclassicism. Fischer spent a total of 20 years at the centre of the Parisian art scene, which also birthed a collegial friendship with world-renowned French artist Artistide Maillol (1861-1944). As Fischer settled permanently in Paris in 1915, he also married. Ellen and Adam Fischer’s artistic fellowship and life-long journey was celebrated in 1982 with the exhibition “Copenhagen/Paris/Round-trip” at both the National Gallery of Denmark and Randers Art Museum. “French Soldier” is a major work of art within Danish modernism, both in its cubist perfection, as well as in its reference to the historic realities and the capsized world-view, which World War I triggered. 810 JENS ADOLF JERICHAU b. Roskilde 1890, d. Paris 1916
Composition, sketch for "Havguder" (Sea Gods), 1916. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 116 x 138,5 cm. A composition with two figures on the reverse related to the painting "Elskov" (Love) (1915) in the collection of ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum. The last variant of the motif "Havguder" (Sea Gods) in the collection of Museum Jorn, Silkeborg (T.A. no. 177). Literature: Troels Andersen: "Jens Adolf Jerichau (1890-1916). En biografi og en fortegnelse over hans værker", Copenhagen, 1983, no. 165, ill. p. 193. Exhibited: "Jens Adolf Jerichau 1890-1916", Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen, 1966, cat. no. 51. Provenance: Probably acquired directly from the artist's sister, Elisabeth, by the present owners family. In his biography of Jens Adolf Jerichau, art historian Troels Andersen describes how the artist in his very short life of only 26 years underwent quite an extraordinary, artistic development with the fullness of a long life lived. In opposition to contemporary ideals, artistic standards and any wider recognition. Jens Adolf Jerichau’s large figure images evolve - with art historian William Wanscher as a mentor - within a quite peculiar intersection between the Renaissance and the ‘grand style’ of the classical period and the contemporary French modernism represented by such different names as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. During a very short period of only 3-4 years up to his death, Jerichau creates an expressive, spontaneous method of painting, where the starting point may be classical, figurative and motivic, but where the painting itself, the strokes and the colourism eventually become the true foundation. Jerichau already works with the subject matter of “Sea Gods” in 1915, but in the year of his death - 1916 - he returns to the subject in paintings, including the painting offered here. The figures in the foreground form a wave motion, and a rearing figure of a sea monster is centrally placed in a picturesquely released, compositional and coloristic, superbly balanced composition that represents the culmination of an intense artistic development. Jens Adolf Jerichau was ahead of his time, and Troels Andersen describes how the artist was hesitant to consider consummate paintings as finished: “These ‘unfinished’ images show perhaps the strongest aspect of Jerichau as a painter. In the paintings, the subjects are submitted, with an almost complete ruthlessness, to the colour’s development in dramatic, expressive action. Such a spontaneous work method could not be accepted, not even by those who knew him best“ (TA p. 86) . DKK 1,000,000 / € 135,000

"Dameportræt. Brystbillede, trekvartprofil mod venstre, hvid bluse med lysegrøn kant. Blå baggrund" (Ladies portrait. Half-length portrait, three-quarter profile to the left, white blouse with light green edge. Blue background), 1932. Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 93 x 73 cm. Literature: Preben Wilmann & Marianne Brøns: "Lundstrøm", Copenhagen 1987 (1977), no. 243. Exhibited: "Vilhelm Lundstrøms Mindeudstilling", Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; Rådhushallen, Aarhus and Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, 1951, cat. no. 109 Exhibited: "Vandreudstilling af dansk kunst i Jugoslavien", 1961; Poland, May 1961, cat. no. 92. Provenance: Mrs. Lis Bernhard Hansen, Copenhagen. Acquired directly from the artist and hence by descent in the family. Not previously offered for sale. ‘Light’, ‘surface’, ‘equilibrium’, ‘harmony’ and ‘monumentality’ are some of the words that are often mentioned when Vilhelm Lundstrøm’s most iconic, classic and increasingly rare works from the 1930s are described. The emphasis on clarity can also be found in the artist’s own statements: “There has to be order between the image’s various elements, and this order reveals itself, when all the lines and surfaces of colour are aligned in a specific and shared harmony ... I for my part have the pronounced impression that there ARE things in nature - people, animals, etc. - that are so complex that they, through the eyes, are experienced as something unreasonable and unsightly. Something smooth, firm and round is, I think, direct and immediately beautiful. The eyes enjoy it in the same way as the ears appreciate pure notes”(Quote from Otto Gelsted’s “Words by Vilhelm Lundstrøm,” in cat. for the memorial exhibition 1951). The work offered here is an excellent example of how Lundstrøm, with Preben Wilmann’s words, finds a way into the “essence of a human being without departing from the principles on which his contemporary still lifes are based”. Preben Wilmann quotes the painter Ejler Bille for an accurate characterization of Lundstrøm’s portraits, which are not portraits that depict, but idols, archetypes or even Goddesses: “When he paints a woman, he actually paints her in the same way as he would have painted a water jug. But since he also paints a water jug, as he would have painted a woman, this absurdity is removed”. (P. P. 236-38). DKK 500,000-600,000 / € 67,000-80,500

b. København 1887, d. 1972
"Den første kærlighed" (The First Love). Signed Axel Poulsen 1913. White marble. H. 170 cm. The sculpture "The First Love" is Axel Poulsen's breakthrough piece, and it was a large part of the reason why Poulsen was awarded the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' Eckersberg Medal in 1914. The work was created in Rome and the figures' slender limbs are clearly inspired by the early Italian renaissance and especially Donatello (13861466), whom Axel Poulsen felt artistically akin to. Axel Poulsen shared his interest for the early renaissance with his contemporary colleague Einar Utzon-Frank (1888-1955), who, however, to a greater degree was focused on the formal inspiration, while Axel Poulsen was interested in the universal human themes. A version of the motif - created in 1916 - can be found in Copenhagen in the collection at the National Gallery of Denmark, and a version in plaster can be found in the collection at BRANDTS - Museum for Art and Visual Culture in Odense. It was the family's favorite room, where they spend most of the time. It was the place where Carl Larsson worked. He called the room "lättjans tempel" the temple of relaxation. Ingrid is standing barefooted in her light summer dress and a smart hat with a blue ribbon on her head. She is standing next to a typical Swedish Gustavian piece of furniture. Carl Larsson has placed a crayfish on the table - a humorous detail. DKK 800,000-1,000,000 / € 105,000-135,000

Provenance: Mrs. Kamma Madsen and Mr. and Mrs. Eduard and Ellen Jørgensen, Hotel Dania, Silkeborg. Acquired directly from the artist and not previously offered in public sale. Letter from the hotel owner Ellen Jorgensen is included: "In Asger Jorn's later years, he often stayed at Hotel Dania, Silkeborg. In connection with one of these stays he offers my husband, Eduard Jørgensen, the chance to purchase one of his paintings. My husband buys it while he is employed as a director. My husband buys the hotel from Mrs. Kamma Madsen in 1960, when the picture still hangs in our restaurant. Asger Jorn often comes for a visit in Silkeborg, and on one occasion he offers to buy back the picture at twice the purchasing price! But by then the picture was not for sale". The painting was created in connection with - and in its motif related to - the two earlier masterpieces and monumental series "Årstiderne" (The Seasons) (1948-1953) and the series "Af den stumme myte" (On the Silent Myth) at Silkeborg Public Library. It was painted during and around the artist's stay at Silkeborg Sanatorium. Paintings from this period, often populated with the so-called 'Aganakker' - threatening or smiling animal creatures - are often described as a highlight of Jorn's Nordic painting, before he left Denmark. "Uden titel" (Untitled), 1946. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 100 x 69 cm. Literature: Guy Atkins: "Jorn in Scandinavia 1930-1953", London, 1968, no. 450, ill. Provenance: The collection of Ole Reimer, Copenhagen. Provenance: Private collection, Denmark. In the summer of 1944, Asger Jorn lives with art collector Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg in Tibirke. Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg's nickname is "Dida", and during this period Asger Jorn signs a series of watercolours with the signature "ASKA". This leads to the term "Didaska Images", describing a number of paintings created primarily in 19441945. But variations on the theme can also be found in works from 1946, where the painting in question is from. The Didaska images typically show two bird-figures in an intimate relationship or interwoven, and the motif has obviously been interpreted as a symbol of the erotic attraction between Asger Jorn and Elna Fonnesbech-Sandberg. In this strongly lit and highly picturesque composition, two upright bird creatures materialize in the impetuous brushstrokes - especially when the gaze is focused on faces and eyes at the top of the image. Virtus Schade describes the years 1945-46 as 'The time of the Didaskas': "(...) Typical for the Didaska images in the large format was that the strong colours gathered in the centre of the image around figures, one or more, and that the background which limited them was billowing, coloured lines, broad strokes that went all the way around the figures. They were not in the strictest sense background, but an extra frame for the figures. The room had disappeared. 1946 also meant a return to the pattern. The image became a kaleidoscope of small, coloured bits of painting in a larger, complete form (...) "(Virtus Schade:" Asger Jorn - A world renown Danish artist", Copenhagen, 1965, p. 46). Jørn Utzon’s Collection Lot. no. 849-859 At this auction we present works from Jørn Utzon’s private art collection from his home in Hellebæk north of Copenhagen. The collection reflects the world-famous Danish architect’s special eye for the greatest artists of his time, including Le Corbusier, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Henri Laurens, Pablo Picasso and Asger Jorn.
Le Corbusier’s Tapestry One of the collection’s highlights is a tapestry by Le Corbusier from 1960 entitled “Les dés sont jetés” (The dice are cast). It was made while Utzon and Corbusier collaborated on the interior of the Sydney Opera House. In a letter from 4 October 1960 the Utzon couple wrote a heartfelt greeting to Corbusier: ”For quite some time we have intended to write to you again in order to tell you how extremely happy we are for your wonderful tapestry. It is a daily source of delight and beauty not only for ourselves and our children but for all our friends and guests, too. It has endowed our home with a beauty so exquisite that I am at a loss for the proper words to describe our feelings about it. (…)
From Great French Artists to Asger Jorn Utzon was greatly inspired by French art, and he purchased works by Georges Braque and Fernand Léger for his private collection. Among the items up for auction you can also find a clay figure by Henri Laurens, which the Utzon couple was given by the artist himself. Pablo Picasso was also a source of great fascination for the Danish architect, and there are several Picasso-works in the collection, including graphic works and a beautiful ceramic pitcher, “Pichet gothique aux oiseaux”, from 1953. Utzon’s collection also contains Danish art. Asger Jorn, for instance, gave Utzon 16 lithographs from his “Anniversary Series” (1963), because Utzon had designed an extension of the art museum in Silkeborg, which was to house the works of Jorn. All of the lithographs are up for auction.
The Architect Jørn Utzon Jørn Utzon (1918-2008) graduated as an architect in 1942. His career gathered momentum, when he in 1957 won the international architectural competition for the Sydney Opera House. The next several years he worked on the century’s most famous building, and everything went according to plan until the change of government in Australia in 1965. The opera house’s exterior was finished, and Jørn Utzon was about to begin work on the interior. He had plans to decorate the opera with tapestries by Le Corbusier. But the new governing party in the Australian parliament wanted the building finished quickly and cheaply. Therefore, they suspended the payments to Jørn Utzon, who withdrew from the construction in 1966. Australian architects completed the construction, and the Sydney Opera House was completed in 1973 without Utzon’s stamp on the interior design and the planned decorations by Le Corbusier. In 2003 Jørn Utzon received, as the first Dane, the Nobel Prize for architecture, the Pritzker Architecture Prize. In the statement accompanying the award the president of the jury, Lord Rothschild, referenced Utzon’s talent in general and the Sydney Opera House in particular. The building was included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007 - the year before Utzon died at the age of 90.

"Conjunction XV". Stamped Chadwick 1970, 602, 4/6. Bronze. H. 138 cm. Literature: Dennis Farr & Eva Chadwick: "Lynn Chadwick Sculptor. With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-1988", Oxford, 1990, no. 602. Provenance: Court Gallery, Copenhagen. Provenance: Private collection, Charlottenlund, Denmark. Acquired from the above. Lynn Chadwick visited the present owner in connection with the acquisition and saw the sculpture's placement in their garden. Likewise the present owner visited the artist at his workshop in Lypiatt Park, Gloucestershire, England. In 1952, Lynn Chadwick along with seven other young sculptors, including Reg Butler, Bernard Meadows and Eduardo Paolozzi, were selected to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale. Although they each only exhibited few artworks, the international art world soon recognised that a new style of sculpture had been born. Only four years after the exhibition, Lynn Chadwick received his first major accolade when in 1956 he received the Venice Biennale Sculptor’s Award in front of legends such as Alberto Giacometti. Lynn Chadwick’s first sculptures were mobiles that were inspired by Alexander Calder’s famous metal mobiles and which paid tribute to his own masterly craftsmanship. Through the 1960s, 1970s and right up until the 1990s, Chadwick continued to innovate and develop his art, from the mobile to the ‘stabile’, to establish an idiom that reflects the shapes of nature - with humans and animals taking centre stage. Apart from the technical aspect of his work, Chadwick found it important to reflect the fundamentals of life, such as representing animal images in various attack situations or in states of repression. In his representation of human form, Chadwick explores the relationship between individuals, their movement, interaction and sexuality. This sculpture from 1970 entitled “Conjunction XV” shows the interaction between male and female: “This more naturalistic treatment of parts of the female body appears in the early ‘Elektras’ and ‘Two Sitting Figures’, where the breasts and abdomen are tenderly modelled, and sharply emphasize the femininity of these figures when seen in consort with their male counterparts” (Farr & Chadwick p. 13). The title “Conjunction XV” emphasises the interaction and synergy between the two figures that face each other closely with their arms stretched out. DKK 1,200,000-1,500,000 / € 160,000-200,000

D. 180 cm. 1986 became a high point in Robert Jacobsen's Asian adventure with the unveiling of the monumental iron sculpture "Venskab" (Friendship) in the People's Republic of China, "I, who do not write, I looked at the Chinese writing ... I saw them sculpturally," says Robert Jacobsen. From his studio near Egtved the artist worked with Chinese calligraphy in his later career. The simple beauty of the characters appealed to Jacobsen and resulted in a range of sculptural abstractions related to China, whereof none, however, have the format to match the magnificent "Venskab". The story begins many years earlier, all the way back to Egtved-pigen (the Egtved girl) and her burial place in the undulating countryside around Vejle. Here Jacobsen constructs, in the years 1986-1991, a series of landscape sculptures in a dialogue with the area's history, materials and the sun's movement across the sky. While the day moves from light towards darkness, and the year moves from winter to summer, the appearance of the sculptures change. "Happiness" from 1981 is a small wooden model of "Venskab". The sculpture gazes both ahead and back into history, timeless yet subject to the present, as a primordial form preceding both Jacobsen's work with the nature of Jutland and the Chinese culture. The sculpture exists in several different versions. A bronze version of the sculpture is situated in Kongens Have, while the large iron sculpture has been resold to the Sammlung Würth, Künzelsau, Germany. Literature: Different versions of the figure are mentioned in Descargues: "Robert Jacobsen: Conversations 1971-1991" p. 132, and the Gothenburg Museum of Art: "Theme Chinois" cat. no. 2. Exhibited: The Black Diamond Library, Copenhagen, c. 1995. Provenance: "Jydebrødrene" (the Petersen Brothers). Provenance: Galerie Edeling, Copenhagen. DKK 200,000-250,000 / € 27,000-33,500

Peter Louis-Jensen At this auction we can for the first time present two monumental works by Peter LouisJensen (1941-1999). The works of art are from the Ex-School period in the 1960s, where Peter Louis-Jensen, together with artists such as Poul Gernes and Per Kirkeby, delivered a radical new departure from the established modernism of the Danish art scene - or from the modernist idea itself of the isolated, self-reliant work of art. In 1963 Peter Louis-Jensen wrote to art historian Troels Andersen, who was also part of the Ex-School’s inner circle: “It is not true that you can hang a good painting anywhere, and not risk the painting loosing its own ‘inner power’ because of this placement. A painting, as any other thing, exists only and because of the exterior forces acting upon it. A colour for instance, exists only because of the colour that lies next to it.” Peter Louis-Jensen and the other artists of the Ex-School wanted to move art, the materials of art and not least the experience of art to an understandable level for a wider public. Art historian Christine Buhl Andersen points out, as she quotes the artist in a radio interview from 1965 that Peter Louis-Jensen’s work from 1960-65 can be “(...) seen as one long dismantling of the image as the closed unit with an ‘inner strength’ (...) A process of destruction that more precisely resulted in a series of structural panels, violently perforated with a drill and scorched by open fire. Why? Because the painter surely could ‘continue to develop his structural challenges at home, and he could probably achieve much more in terms of developing the abstract painting, but that is not relevant anymore, because it has dried out in its use as avant-garde ... that which we have lost over the last 50 years in the form of contact with a wider public. We have to win this back ... it is necessary if art is to avoid isolation.’”(CB-A p. 11-12)

Rolf Læssøe (ed): ..."This beautiful painting is a central piece among the paintings, which the painter calls his "doll images". Although the pain ting, at some level, ironically describes the characters' ridiculousness and lacking ability to communicate among themselves, it also contains other layers of great and tender beauty, not only in its colouristic harmonies, but also in the vulnerability that these doll-like figures seem to possess. They are a kind of toy, placed on a tabletop as in a traditional nature morte, but they have their own biological life as pupae with intrinsic potential for evolution and life. Their nature as animated objects is emphasized here, as in many of the painter's images, as well as in his later works, by the blue tones that endow them with an almost electric luminous aura". "Det fede og Det magre" (The Fat and the Lean), 1970 no. I and no II. Signed NS 1970 on painting no. II. Oil on board, two-parts. Each 100 x 75 cm. (2) Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen, 1977, cat. no. 17. Exhibited: Sophienholm, Lyngby, Denmark, 1997, cat. no. 9. Niels Strøbek's artistic starting point came from his training with the spontaneous-abstract painter Egill Jacobsen. Yet the earliest paintings show a realism that borders on the surreal. Strøbek has painted numerous portraits, which through their objects describe the portrayed person, but he catches one's interest in particular in the works, where he blows up the naturalistic reality. He has painted many still life paintings, which show his technical ability in the same way as can

be seen in the 1600s Dutch paintings. Lunch reproduces a plate with open-faced sandwiches, an egg in an egg-cup with a matching spoon, knife, fork and a water glass, all placed on a table. Here Strøbek uses different perspectives, for instance the water glass and egg-cup are seen obliquely from the side, while the plate and the cutlery are shown almost vertically from above. There is a cubic influence, which has not been seen since in his work. Strøbek's later super realism is already evident in this painting, for instance in the traces of the knife on the buttered piece of bread. An example of Strøbek's early acquired technical skills includes the five part work "The Closet", where the nature of the different materials, from the texture of the dishcloths, the force of the potato sprouts, the dead hen's wax pale smoothness, the slimy surface of the fish and the background's wood marbling stand out. Strøbek is most exciting in the work where a degree of ambiguity can be perceived. DKK 300,000 / € 40,000

"Den gyldne fugl. Et familiebillede" (The Golden Bird. A Family Painting), 1939. Signed v.b.-p. 39. Oil on canvas. 97 x 130 cm. It is a painting with transparent figures as pioneered and used by the Belgian artist René Magritte. The time for its execution is interesting, 1939, the year World War II broke out. If one looks carefully at the painting there are elements in it showing the fear many people had in 1939. ...Sigurd Schultz's review of the picture in 1943 does not mention threats, it describes it as a family picture tending to be of a symbolic nature with references back to the artists Johannes Holbek and Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. This is understandable considering the German occupation of Denmark at the time when the picture was exhibited and the review was written. He does not point out either the possible inspiration from triptych altar pieces featuring the Holy Family.

Construction, 1951. Signed R.J. 178. Black painted iron. H. 30 cm. The sculpture is a striking example of Robert Jacobsen's earliest, rotatable sculptures. In 1955, Jacobsen's colleague Victor Vasarely arranged an exhibition of kinetic (movable) art at Galerie Denise René, which led to a discussion on movement in art between the two friends - and a clarification of Robert Jacobsen's position on the subject. Robert Jacobsen: "[...] I thought about the idea of kinetism and found that it did not create a movement more interesting than that of a watch, as it always ended up where it started (...). I said to Vasarely: for me, movement is the shock you get when you see something. Otherwise it becomes a pendulum. It is just illusionism, if a picture vibrates as you walk past it. I don't want illusions. I want a concrete feeling. Since we have to have an expression which ends in 'ism', I call my idea 'ideo-motorism', the motorism that comes from the shock of seeing the things. Vasarely replied: I can't exhibit something that doesn't move. I replied: it moves more than you think". (Pierre Descargues: "Robert Jacobsen: Conversations 1947-1991", Copenhagen ,1996, p. 49). Preliminary work for "Dantessøjlen" (The Dante column). Signed Utzon Frank 1924; foundry stamp L. Rasmussen, København. Patinated bronze. H. 101 cm. Preliminary work for the monument placed in front of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek on Dantes Plads in Copenhagen. On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of his death, Italy's greatest poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) had the square in front of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek named after him. A memorial column with a statue of Dante's beloved Beatrice was raised. The ancient column in the finished monument is a gift from the city of Rome, a bronze relief with the laurel-wreathed poet's portrait is created by Libero Andreotti and donated by the city of Florence. The monument's plinth is made after a drawing by Gunnar Biilmann Petersen. The first stone was laid on June 23, 1922 in the presence of Italian King Vittorio Emanuele and King Christian X of Denmark, and the unveiling took place on August 23 august 1924. 945 GERDA WEGENER b. Hammelev 1885, d. Frederiksberg 1940
Street scenery. Signed monogram; signed and on a note on the reverse Gerda Wegener, Firenze 1910. Watercolour and pastel on paper. Visible size 27 x 24 cm. Gerda Wegener’s strong stylistic skills are clearly expressed in this composition, in both the structure and the colour scheme, which is reminiscent of the French master Toulouse-Lautrec (18641901). At the same time the composition functions as a portrayal of the 19th-20th century urban life in the metropolis: the decadent ladies pass by a group of men who throw thinly veiled glances towards the beauties. Wegener portrays the condensed flâneur atmosphere and the erotic undertones with both a sharp and humorous empathy. In 1907 Gerda Wegener won a sketching contest in the Danish newspaper Politiken. This marked the beginning of her artistic career that led her to Paris and right into the middle of the 1920s Art Deco environment. Soon she became a sought after illustrator of women's magazines, and she also drew several posters. Her marriage with the painter Ejnar Wegener represents a unique chapter in her life: They lived in an open relationship that allowed Gerda to live as a lesbian. Ejnar received, as the first transgender person in the world, gender corrective surgery, which attracted much attention. The unique story has just been made into a Hollywood film production entitled "The Danish Girl", which will have its premiere in 2016. The composition, which is up for auction, is an interesting early work from the couple's first trip abroad, which took them through Italy to France. DKK 15,000-20,000 / € 2,000-2,700

The present landscape/seascape is one of few paintings known to be painted in Norway. It is clearly influenced by his teacher Axel Revold, like another painting, a harbour scene, also painted in Norway. In 1930 he exhibited in Oslo together with Bjarne Rise and Johannes Rian. In 1932, after his training at Bauhaus, he exhibited again in Oslo at the Artist’s Association (Kunstnerforbundet) together with Bjarne Rise and Karen Holtsmark. DKK 10,000-15,000 / € 1,350-2,000

BRASSAï / by night The section of fine photography opens with a selection of notable photographs by the influential Hungarian-French photographer Guyla Halasz (1899-1994), better known as Brassaï. Among the selection of photographs by Brassaï are a number of his iconic images from nocturnal Paris in the early 1930s. Brassaï was infatuated with Paris and used the camera to explore the city, when he started photographing in the late 1920s. Like many other Hungarian artists and intellectuals he had moved to Paris in the mid 1920s. His friend, the renowned photographer André Kertész, introduced him to photography and with the camera at hand he began wandering the streets at night, visiting the dance halls, cafés, street fairs and brothels. He got close to the prostitutes, customers, homosexuals and criminals inhabiting these venues and won their confidence. In turn they gave him permission to photograph their ‘secret’ life, work and leisure time in the Parisian night. One of the photographs presented is known from his first, influential and groundbreaking work “Paris de Nuit” (catalogue number 1075) and others from his ‘Secret Paris’ project (catalogue number 1076, 1077 and 1078) – a project he had wanted to realize since “Paris de Nuit” in 1933. However his collection of photographs of the secret nightlife of Paris were not published until 1976 in “The Secret Paris of the Thirties”. Where “Paris de Nuit” was a photographic walk through the Parisian streets at night, “The Secret Paris of the Thirties” revealed the Parisian night-life of the decade from within, focusing on its vast variety of people and lifestyles, that thrived in the darkness of night. The British Magnum photographer Martin Parr has noted in his history of photobooks that “Brassaï’s nocturnal vision of Paris is so well known, and his book Paris de Nuit (Paris by Night) has been so influential – the first in a long line of noctambulations by photographers [...] one should think of it as amongst the best produced and influential photobooks ever.” (Martin Parr, 2014. p. 134). Brassaï’s photographic vision and method have inspired a wide range of photographers, e.g. Robert Doisneau, Diane Arbus and Weegee, whose work is also presented at this auction. Specialist in photography, Christine Almlund, will be giving a short talk about Brassaï and the works presented on Friday 29 May at 3 pm at the preview in Bredgade.

b. 1899, d. 1994, pseud. for photographer Gyula Halász
"Place d'Italie/Fete Foraine", c. 1931. Vintage gelatin silver print, entitled in pencil and with artist's Rue de Faubourg credit stamp on verso. Printed in reverse. Printed before 1939. Framed. Visible size 16,5 x 22,5 cm. The photograph here presented is a rare variant copy of one of Brassaï's iconic photographs published in his pioneering book "Paris de Nuit" from 1933 (photograph number 22). The publisher of this important book kept the negatives of Brassaï's photographs after it was printed and they were not found again until 1984, thus vintage prints of Brassaï's photographs from this work are extremely rare and almost only exist in variant copies, like this one. Exhibited at Fotografisk Center, Copenhagen. 2001. "Bal de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève", c. 1931. Vintage gelatin silver print, with the artist's Rue de la Glaciere credit stamp. Printed before 1936. Framed. Visible size 20,8 x 14,2 cm. The photograph here presented is from Brassaï's 'Paris intime' (Secret Paris) project which took him more than 40 years to realise. It was taken at Bal de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in 1931: "When the music wasn't playing, the place was like an ordinary popular dance hall, the customers chatting and sipping varicolored drinks - pink, green, purple. But when the band launched into a java, a waltz, however, the ambiguity knocked one over. On the floor were only couples of men or couples of women... never a woman and a man [...] The high season at this dance hall occurred at Mardi Gras and Mid-Lent. The hall would be packed with costumed customers, men dressed as women, women dressed as men, jostling each other and fighting the crush on the tiny dance floor until dawn." Visible size 22,7 x 16,5 cm. The photograph here presented is a variant of one of Brassaï's famous photographs from the homosexual balls at Magic City in 1932-33: "I attended a strange ball: the last of the big homosexual ball at Magic City. The cream of Parisian inverts was to meet there, without distinction as to class, race, or age. And every type came, faggots cruisers, chickens, old queens, famous antique dealers and young buthcerboys, haridressers and elevator boys, well known dress designers and drag queens, The Duchess Zoé, the Peruvian, Mimosa and Peaches, Mignon and Divine, the Blonde and Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs, the Baron de Charlus and the tailor Jupien, every Albert and André metamorphosed for this great night into Andrée and Albertine." Brassaï: The Secret Paris of the Thirties", 1976. n.p.

"Brassaï never felt an obligation to print the full negative of his original image and sometimes printed only a small portion of the whole [...] Brassai often changed his mind about how to crop a picture, leaving more of the image on the sides or top in different prints. BRASSAï / by day Brassaï’s photographs of Paris in the 1930s broke new ground and made him world famous almost instantaneously after the publication of his first nocturnal photographs. His friend the author Henry Miller named him “The Eye of Paris”. This sympathetic eye for composition, place and not least people was sought after and Brassaï became a highly respected commercial photographer working for several of the pictorial magazines like VU, The Picture Post, Harpers Bazaar and others that had become exceptionally popular all over Europe and in the US since the mid-1920s. On the next pages we present a selection of his day-time photographs from travels to various regions of France in the 1930s and early 1940s. The photographs all have a humanistic and positive atmosphere and as with his nocturnal photographs they were well prepared, focusing on the characteristics of the region or city. In the photo sequences of the cocardieres in Provence, the pedalo pick-up on Cote d’Azur as well as in the photographs of the glacier climbers and mountaineers in the Alps (catalogue number 1080 - 1083) Brassaï distinctly captures an activity that is essential to each region’s culture or daily life – without superfluous details, but with his characteristic, poetic eye for the situation.

La gouvernante Manufacture de Sèvres, c. 1850. Salted paper negative. 28,4 x 22 cm. This rare paper negative photograph by the French artist and photography pioneer Louis-Rémy Robert of the governess of the Sèvres Porcelain Factory is from the earliest years of photography. Robert grew up at the Royal Porcelain Factory in Sèvres on the outskirts of Paris, where his father was head of the glass painting atelier. A position he later assumed himself. The village and it's countryside attracted artist's who inspired each other including Robert, who began experimenting with paper print photography around 1850, around the time this paper negative is from. In 1852 the well known chemist and pioneering photographer, Regnault, became director of the factory. The two men inspired each others work. His pioneering work concentrated on portraits of friends and families, still lifes of the products from the factory and landscape and architectural studies. Karl Struss The American photographer and cinematographer Karl Struss is probably most known for his work as camera man on many notable films, including Charles Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” and “Limelight”. But he was also a notable photographer and part of the pictorialists group called Photo-Secession, founded by the avantgarde modernist photographer Alfred Stieglitz, which sought to promote photography as a fine art. Eight of his photographs were published in the April 1912 issue of “Camera Work”, one of the most well respected avantgarde publications on photography, published from 1903-1917 and edited by Steiglitz. Struss’s series “The Female Figure” was created in the same period and published in 1917.

The two photographs here presented are from The German-Polish photographer Germaine Krull's now very sougth after work, the modernist photobook Métal (1927) which introduced German 'New Objectivity' (Neue Sachlichkeit) photography to France, sharply emphasizing the abstract forms of industry. Robert Doisneau The French “street” photographer Robert Doisneau is particularly famous for his humanistic photographs of the life of the Parisian suburbs in the 1940s and 50s. Like the slighly older photographer Brassaï he liked to record the night life, the café routines as well as every day life on the streets. The photographs here presented show one of his favorite themes: local wedding receptions and processions in the cafés and streets of Paris.

Weegee The American photographer known as Weegee is regarded as the American counterpart to Brassaï. His photographs of the nightlife, bars and crime scenes in the streets of New York in the 1930s and 1940s are today iconic. In the late 1940s he began working insistently with new developing techniques and made a series of distortion photographs of notabilities made with a kaleidoscope in front of the lens. These distortions include this sequence of Picasso - an interesting photographic experiment that parallels Picasso’s own multi-facetted paintings. “The results go far beyond fun-house mirror distortions. They demonstrate both the surface elasticity and inner lives of images, showing them to be wildly polymorphus and bubbling with conflict emotions [...] for the most part his late work parlayed the visceral, somewhat nasty edge of his street work into a suitable physical, rough-and-tumble darkroom technique. The images resonate with Surrealism, animation, political cartooning and, most recently, photo appropriation. They give further expression to the instinct for brutality and beauty, often in tandem, that made him famous in the first place.” Roberta Smith: Art in Review; Weegee. New York Times, 7 July 2000. Photographs from Weegee’s “Picaso-Monster” series are also in the collections of International Center of Photography, New York and Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana.

1107 DIANE ARBUS b. 1923, d. 1971, Photographer
"Two Female Impersonators Backstage", 1961. Gelatin silver print, estate stamped, titled, dated printed by Neil Selkirk, signed by Doon Arbus. Printed after 1971. Framed. Visible size 22 x 14,5 cm. The notable American photographer Diane Arbus shot a series of photographs of transvestites from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This photograph was taken at Club 82, a "female-impersonator's club" in Lower Manhattan in 1961. Arbus was excellent at gaining the trust and getting access to the intimate spheres of the people she wanted to photograph. "I really believe there are things which nobody would see unless I photographed them," she said. Diane Arbus: Aperture Monograph. 2011-2012, p. 15. This resulted in a very direct and often unsettling honest expression in her work, revealing the 'unseen' sides of the people in front of her camera. It is also this 'unseen' gap between the intention and effect we as human beings have on others - the idea of self - that gives her work a unique edge. Critics have called her the photographer of freaks, but her photographs of twin girls, upper class ladies and middle class couples in lawn chairs as well as giants, midgets, transvestites and nudists reveal - regardless of background and appearance - the flaws in all of us. Arbus is today regarded as the most influential female photographer of the 20th century. A copy of this photograph was part of MoMA's exhibition "Recent Aquisitions" in New York in 1965 as one of three works by Arbus. It is also in the joint collection of Tate Museum, London/The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. Literature: Patricia Bosworth: Diane Arbus. 2005. Provenance: The Neumann-Hug Collection, Switzerland. DKK 25,000 / € 3,350

Roger Ballen The American photographer Roger Ballen is famous for his depiction of people on the edge of society, especially in South Africa where he has lived most of his life. He was early on inspired by the documentary style of the Magnum photographers, but through the years he has developed his own style trying to get closer to his objects than a traditional documentary photographer, giving his work a more disturbed even surreal or absurd expressiveness.
