Safety warnings Intended use The MP3 player is intended for playing music in MP3 or WMA format. The device is designed for private use and is not suitable for commercial purposes. DANGER to children • Children are not aware of the risks involved when electronic appliances are handled incorrectly. Therefore, keep children away from the product. • Keep packaging materials and the device away from children. There is a risk of suffocation and a danger of children swallowing small parts! 5 DANGER due to electricity • Do not immerse the mains adapter in water or other liquids, and protect it from dripand splashwater - otherwise there is a risk of electric shock. • Only connect the MP3 player to the mains adapter in dry indoor rooms. • Do not put any containers filled with liquid, such as vases, on or within close proximity of the device or mains adapter. They could topple over and the liquid impair the electrical safety of the device. • If connecting the device to the mains, use only the enclosed mains adapter or a USB cable to charge the MP3 player. • Only connect the mains adapter to a properly installed wall socket with a voltage that complies with the mains voltage of the technical data of the mains adapter. 6 • • • • The wall socket used must be easily accessible so that the mains adapter can be removed quickly if need be. Route the USB cable in such a way as to ensure that it cannot be tripped over. Unplug the mains adapter from the wall socket ... if a fault occurs during operation, ... after use, ... in the event of a thunderstorm and ... before cleaning the appliance. When doing so, always pull on the mains adapter, not on the USB cable. The USB cable must not be kinked or squashed. Keep it away from hot surfaces and sharp edges. Discontinue using the mains adapter and USB cable if they show visible signs of damage or if the mains adapter has been dropped. 7 • Do not make any modifications to the device. Only have repairs to the device or mains adapter carried out at a specialist workshop or the Service Centre. You should not attempt to replace the rechargeable battery yourself. Improper repair may expose the user to considerable hazards. DANGER due to loud music • Set the volume to low before putting on earphones or headphones! Your hearing may be damaged if exposed to prolonged or sudden high volumes. • Do not use the MP3 player if you are actively negotiating road traffic. This is prohibited as it endangers you and other road users. CAUTION – material damage • Wait for a few minutes before connecting the mains adapter if the device has been moved from a cold to a warm room. The condensation produced can, under certain 8 • • • • circumstances, destroy the device. You can connect the device safely as soon as it has reached room temperature. Protect the MP3 player from moisture, dust, high temperatures and direct sunlight. Otherwise it may malfunction or the electronics or casing be damaged. Do not drop the MP3 player or expose it to sharp knocks. Do not place any objects on top of the device. To avoid damage caused by overheating, do not cover the device or mains adapter during charging. 9 • • • • Do not expose the MP3 player to strong magnetic fields. They can damage the memory and stored data. Do not charge the rechargeable battery for longer than 12 hours, this will damage it. Do not use caustic chemicals or aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents for cleaning. Use only genuine accessories. CAUTION – loss of data • Do not disconnect the MP3 player from the computer while files are being read, written or deleted. Otherwise, data may be damaged or lost. • In unfortunate circumstances, the installation of new hardware on your computer may crash the system or cause loss of data. Close all open programmes and files beforehand. 10 Legal information: Bear in mind the statutory regulations relating to the use of pieces of music in WMA or MP3 format. You may only use your MP3 player to write or copy files of which you are the author or for which the authors or rights owners have granted you the relevant rights of use. While the device is charging, do not restrict the flow of air to the device or the mains adapter by covering it with newspapers, blankets or similar items. • The rechargeable battery is charged by means of the mains adapter or a computer. The player cannot be operated while it is charging. However, you can manage the files on the player via the computer. • The ambient temperature when charging should be between +10°C and +40°C. • The device will provide approx. 8 hours of music playback with a fully charged battery. Length of playback depends, among other factors, on the volume selected and the ambient temperature. 14 • The rechargeable battery may discharge completely if the device is not used for a prolonged period. Recharge it at least once every six months, even if the device is not being used, otherwise it will lose some of its capacity. Charging from the mains adapter 1. Insert the small USB cable plug into the USB socket on the player. 2. Insert the large plug into the socket on the mains adapter. 15 3. Connect the mains adapter to an easily accessible wall socket. The orange indicator light lights up continuously and the blue indicator light flashes. 4. When the blue indicator light goes out, the rechargeable battery has been fully charged. Remove the mains adapter from the wall socket. 5. Remove the USB cable from the MP3 player. Charging from the computer As soon as the player is connected to a switched on computer, the rechargeable battery starts to charge. Refer to the section “Connecting the MP3 player to a computer” for information on how to do this and what to look out for. 16 Connecting earphones DANGER due to loud music – risk of accidents and damage to hearing • The use of earphones at high volume or for a very long period of time can lead to permanent damage to hearing. • Do not use the MP3 player if you are actively negotiating road traffic. This is prohibited as it endangers you and other road users. m Plug the earphone jack R L plug into the earphone connection socket on the player. 17 Basic operation Switching the device on m Slide the On/Off switch to ON. The orange indicator light lights up. The MP3 player now takes a brief moment to boot up the operating system. Playback then starts automatically. Switching the device off m Slide the On/Off switch to OFF. Starting and pausing playback to start playback. m Press m Press again to pause playback. To resume playback, press 18 again. Setting the volume m Press + or – to set the volume. • A brief press changes the volume by one step at a time. • A long press changes the volume until you release the button again, or until the highest or lowest volume level has been reached. Skipping to the next/previous track during m Next track: briefly press playback. during m Previous track: briefly press playback. Forwarding and rewinding during a track m Fast forward / fast rewind: press and hold or during playback. 19 The fast forward or fast rewind will stop automatically at the end or beginning of the current track. You cannot move to the next or previous track using these buttons. Activating and deactivating the button lock The button lock prevents you pressing the buttons unintentionally. to m Slide the button lock switch to activate the button lock. to m Slide the button lock switch to deactivate the button lock. 20 Selecting playback mode Here you can choose whether you wish the stored tracks to be played back in a random or normal sequence. . m Slide the playback mode switch to All the tracks in the player are played back in the normal sequence. Playback start with the track you were playing when you last switched off the MP3 player. . m Slide the playback mode switch to All the tracks in the player are played back in a random sequence. Playback starts with a randomly selected track. 21 Swapping between folders If you have saved your music files in more than one folder, you can change between the folders as follows. To change between the folders the playback switch must be on position : m Press the and button simultaneously to skip to the next folder. When the playback switch is on position , is not possible to change between folders. The device will then jump back to the beginning of the track currently played back. 22 Transferring files from a computer System requirements • Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 • Mac OS X 10.2.6 or higher • Pentium 166 MHz or higher • USB connection, preferably USB 2.0 • at least 128 MB free storage space • 150 MB free space on the hard disk • Windows Media Player MSC (Mass Storage Class) Windows with Windows Media Player supports USB Mass Storage Class-compatible devices. The USB end device appears as its own drive and has to be logged off (ejected) before it is unplugged. Otherwise the end device may be damaged. 23 Connecting the MP3 player to a computer CAUTION – material damage • In unfortunate circumstances, the installation of new hardware on your computer may crash the system or cause loss of data. Close all open programmes and files beforehand. • The player appears as its own drive and has to be logged off (ejected) before it is unplugged. Otherwise the player may be damaged. 1. Boot the computer if it has not already been switched on. If it is already switched on, save your work and close all open files and programmes. 2. Insert the small USB cable plug into the USB socket on the player. 3. Connect the large plug to a USB port on the computer. The computer automatically identifies the player as removable media. 24 4. You can synchronise MP3 and WMA files (without DRM protection) with the MP3 player in Windows Media Player or copy them straight to the MP3 player in Explorer or Finder. WMA files with DRM protection will not be played. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is used by many music portals. With this platform, the purchased music file contains a licence which specifies exactly what you are allowed to do with the particular file. Among other things, it is possible to specify whether and how often you may burn the file, how often you may transfer it to another device, or for how long you may use the file. 25 • As with every other storage media, you can also manage all other files, e.g. copy, move or delete. 5. Wait until writing is complete before disconnecting the player from the computer. You need to log off (eject) the player before you unplug it. You will find the relevant dialogue for this on the bottom right of the PC Start bar. On a Macintosh you can simply drag the player onto the Trash icon. 6. Unplug the MP3 player from the computer USB port once you have converted the required files. 26 Fault / remedy • Player cannot be switched on or switches off during playback. • There is no sound. • A music track is not being played or is not being played correctly. • Sound interference. • Is the rechargeable battery flat? • Are the earphones connected correctly? • Has the volume been set too low? • Is the music file faulty? • Is the file in MP3 or WMA format? Read the information/help provided by your online music service. • Log off the player before unplugging it. 28 • Transfer of files between computer and player is not possible. • Rechargeable battery does not recharge or quickly becomes flat again during use. • Check the USB connection. • Is the file faulty? A faulty file can impede the copying of other data. • Is the player’s memory full? • Is the battery faulty? Contact the Service Centre. 29 Cleaning DANGER – risk of fatal electric shock • Disconnect the player from the mains adapter and unplug the adapter from the wall socket before cleaning the device. CAUTION – material damage • The device must not be exposed to moisture. Recycling reduces the amount of waste and helps to protect the environment. Dispose of the packaging in the proper manner. Make use of the local facilities provided for collecting paper, cardboard and lightweight packaging by type. Devices marked with this symbol must not be disposed of along with household waste! You are legally bound to dispose of old devices separately from household waste. Information about collection points where old devices can be disposed of free of charge is available from your local authorities. 32 Regular batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of along with household waste! You are legally bound to dispose of spent batteries and rechargeable batteries at a local authority collection point or to return them to a battery retailer. Pb Batteries and rechargeable batteries Cd marked with these letters contain the Hg following, and other, harmful substances: Pb = lead, Cd = cadmium, Hg = mercury. 33 34 Guarantee We grant a three-year guarantee from the date of purchase. This product was manufactured using the latest production techniques and has undergone thorough quality control inspection. We guarantee that the product is in perfect condition. We will remedy all defects in workmanship or materials within the guarantee period.
