Description
Ethernet
The MPR-ES-1 is a full-featured managed or unmanaged Ethernet switch implemented on a rugged, rear I/O, PMC card. The switch is ideal for embedded networking applications in both conduction and convection cooled systems.
•
The 10-port switch includes eight (8) 10/100 Mbps switch ports and one 10/100/1000 Mbps switch/uplink port brought to the card’s P14 rear I/O connector for use in either “in-chassis” or external networking applications. A second 10/100/1000 Mbps switch port connects to an on-board Ethernet controller that provides the host computer with a direct connection to the switch.
•
This Ethernet switch card can be installed directly into the PMC site of an embedded system. It is also available in a stand-alone rugged Ethernet switch box or factory-integrated into Ballard’s AB2000 Series Avionics BusBox®.
Hardware The MPR-ES-1 is a scalable Ethernet switching solution that combines an advanced Marvell® switch device with on-board magnetics for high-performance and reliable operation. The switch provides IEEE 802.1X MAC-based authentication and support for up to 8K MAC address entries with automatic learning and aging. The Ethernet switch collects information about card and network health, along with temperature data, and makes it available through the host or external GigE ports. The CCPMC form factor allows easy integration with modern embedded computers, including VME, VME-64, cPCI, and VPX systems. Low power consumption and high MTBF ratings make the MPR-ES-1 an ideal choice for rugged, high-availability systems.

Operation
•
The MPR-ES-1 operates as a simple unmanaged switch by default without the need for drivers or software. The card can also be set up to operate as a managed switch, where the user can control complex switch operations and gather detailed statistical data.
•
Switch management functions are set using the management API either through the external GigE switch port or through the PCI bus and the card’s built-in host port. Switch configuration settings can be saved to the card, and if desired, the switch is easily reset to factory defaults for unmanaged operation.
