How to resolve a common issue creating a bootable USB flash drive using the MC Pro and CM408 (Advantech) Rescue Images. This article should be read in conjunction with Knowledge Base Article numbers 00022744 How to re-image 5-MC CM408 and 00022745 How to re-image an MC Pro The Rescue Images available for download from the Avid website are archives created in the *.zip format. These archives contain everything you need to create a valid bootable re-image drive with the exception of the physical USB flash Drive itself. In order to use either of the images you will need a blank USB flash drive or a previously used USB drive that contains data. The flash drive will be formatted as a bootable drive and any data contained on it will be erased. You will also need a computer with a Microsoft Windows based Operating System in order to run the HPUSBFW.EXE USB format and boot utility. This computer can be a native Windows PC system or an Apple Mac system with an appropriate Windows dual boot or virtual PC configuration. Important Note: The format required is Fat 32 so the USB flash drive should have a capacity of 4 GB or less. The files are available from the following links: mcrescue (advantech) v1.13.zip for the MC Pro and 408rescue (advantech) v1.21.zip for the 5-MC CM408 fader module Download the required *.zip file and copy the the file to the hard drive or desktop of a Windows OS computer. Double click the *.zip file to open. The files contained within the archives appear in a directory structure that needs to be preserved when making the bootable USB Flash Drive. MR – 06/06/13 When opening either of the Archives you may see the following (both rescue images are shown): In both cases the zero byte _MACOSX folder should be ignored. This is a harmless Mac OS X resource file that is visible to Windows Explorer in zip archives and other archive file types created on the Mac OS platform. MR – 06/06/13 Drag the folder that is named the same as the archive out of the *.zip onto your hard drive. Double click the folder to open it. They should look like this: In both cases the zero byte file named .DS_Store can be ignored. This is another harmless Mac OS X resource file. The initial part of the process requires the utility HPUSBFW and the system folder. The system folder contains the necessary files to create a Windows/DOS bootable drive. Double click HPUSBFW to run it and follow the instructions contained in Knowledge Base Article numbers 00022744 How to re-image 5-MC CM408 and 00022745 How to re-image an MC Pro. MR – 06/06/13 Rescue Image Trouble Shooting Guide: When creating the bootable USB flash drive rescue image on a Windows 7, Server 2008, or Vista PC the following problem may be encountered; the contents of the archive cannot be copied to the USB flash drive or modified or creating the USB flash drive otherwise fails. If you see the following when extracting the files from the *.zip archive: the file names contained within the archive appear in green text. This indicates that the files are being seen by Windows 7 as having an encryption flag set in the Advanced Attributes of certain files. This is due to the archive having been created in a Mac OS environment and/or using the Windows OS built in file compression/extraction. As a result of the files being flagged as encrypted modification or copying of the files can be prevented due to Access Violations or Permissions. This is a known issue in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 but it is easy to rectify in the files contained in the archive by manually changing the Advanced Attributes. MR – 06/06/13 Right click on the folder containing the green named files and select Properties from the pop up menu. The Properties dialogue will open a shown. Deselect Read-Only then click on Advanced (as shown below) to bring up the Advanced Attributes dialogue. Deselct Encrypt contents to secure data. Click on OK. MR – 06/06/13 This will return you to the Properties Dialogue. Click on Apply. The Confirm Attributes Changes dialogue will open. Make sure Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files is selected and click on OK. The file attribute flags will be reset and all file names should now appear in black text. You will now be able to create the bootable USB flash drive successfully using the files in the rescue image archive. MR – 06/06/13
