An ideal media-converter should be a transparent element in the network, and its ports may be considered as integral parts of the devices interconnected by it. The IEE802.3u standard defines network span in terms of distances and bit times. Conventional 100Base-TX/100Base-FX media-converters are based on repeater technology, and they form a part of the collision domain created by the interconnected devices. Therefore, the delay they introduce in the network severely affects the allowed distances. Furthermore, if two class II repeaters (i.e., 2 hubs) are already present in the same collision domain, then the use of a conventional converter is not allowed as the repeater count may - in such case - exceed the limits. In all other cases, meticulous PDV (Path Delay Value) must be performed prior to establishing the possible distances for both the fiber optic (F/O) and copper segments. The mS. CON2/mS. CON2M family implements a non-repeater, full re-timing approach. It creates a Buffered Media Domain (BMD) over the F/O link, thereby eliminating all the above-mentioned limitations. The device provides two independent conversion channels. Each channel includes a TP and a F/O port. The main purpose of the product is to connect each 10/100TX port to its respective F/O port. The two channels form two-separated security VLANs. The mS. CON2M is the SNMP managed version. The device is normally connected to a router which is able to implement routing between the two security port based VLANs. (by means of subnets, i.e. each security VLAN may belong to a different subnet) 2 – Planning your network with mS.CON2/mS.CON2M Below you will find typical configurations. The TP ports may be connected – without any restriction – to any of the following device types: ‰ Workstation (or server) – 10Mbps ‰ Workstation (or server) – 10/100Mbps (a/n) ‰ Hub – 10Mbps ‰ Hub – 100Mbps ‰ Hub - 10/100Mbps (A/N) ‰ Switch 10/100Mbps ‰ Router – 10/100Mbps See a typical network configuration (next page). 4 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M Typical Network Configuration The network can be monitored and managed from any SNMP management station running popular management platforms (e.g. FibroLAN MetroView, HP OpenView, SNMPc, etc) 3 - Network Design Considerations As already mentioned, the mS. CON2 or mS. CON2M device provides two independent conversion channels. Each channel is a security VLAN. Do NOT interconnect the TP ports or F/O ports of the same device for testing or for any other purposes. 4 – Contents of the ship container The contents of the mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M models (PS48) Port based security VLAN The device is equipped with a real time Fault Propagation mechanism for both channels 6 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M General Description The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is a buffered dual channel media converter. It converts 100Base-FX signals received on its F/O interface in 10/100Base-TX signals and distributes it to its TP (shielded RJ-45) port. Each of these ports is buffered; furthermore, factory set VLAN forms groups each including one TP port and one F/O port, providing the users with basic security (no connection between the users). The TP ports are auto-negotiating and will automatically adapt themselves to the capacity of the users for highest performance (will negotiate 10/100 and FDX/HDX). Nevertheless, in some cases it may be necessary to force certain operation modes. For this purpose, all TP ports may be (individually) forced to 10Mbps/FDX operation Full front panel diagnostics provide information on the operation mode of every port. The F/O ports are configured by default to FDX mode of operation. The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is available with a variety of multi-mode and singlemode interfaces with distance ranging from 2km (MM) to 15km (SM). In addition – SFS (Single-Fiber-Strand) models allow full duplex connection over a single fiber strand, resulting in an additional saving of almost 50%. (mS. CON2M /SMRF13/15 models) The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M features a built in Far End Fault alerting the remote device of a problem in its transmission path. This function may be disabled by flipping a front panel setup switch (#10) and supported by the “TEST” LED for easy front panel diagnostics The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is packaged in a rugged “half rack” enclosure allowing elegant and safe deployment in a variety of environments: desktop, 2 units on a 19” rack-shelf (or within a standard “half 19” rack -optional brackets required) and wall mount installation. Its internal, high-power auto- range switching power supply ensures easy, safe and error-free deployment and enhanced MTBF. Optional –36 to –72VDC power supplies allow deployment in central office. As many other FibroLAN products, mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is available with the ETR (Extended Temperature Range) for outdoor or industrial environment installation. The managed version mS. CON2M provides full in-band SNMP manageability (both monitoring and control) see section 13. The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is equipped with a real time Fault Propagation mechanism for both channels. When enabled ( via front panel MODE SETUP DIP switches # 1 and 5 in UP position), it will propagate failure of a F/O link to the respective TP port (i.e.cut the TP link) to notify the user of the failure condition. (F>T mode of operation) Both channels may have this feature enabled/disabled independently. 7 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M mS.CON2 / mS.CON2M Front and Rear panel The following drawings depict the rear and front panels of the mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M and mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M - 48 (-48VDC model) 0VV -48VDC mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M -48 mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M 8 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M 6 – Far End Fault & Fault Propagation Far end Fault Usually a “LINK” indication is related to the incoming fiber only: F/O LINK ON shows that the path created by the remote transmitter, local receiver and the fiber connecting them is operational. However if there is a fault in the other – outgoing - path (created by the local transmitter, remote receiver and the fiber connecting them) – the indication for such fault can be seen on the remote device only. The FEF implemented in the mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M closes this gap: if there is a fault in the outgoing path and the remote device is FEF compliant then the F/O LINK LED will go OFF on both the local and remote devices. In this way we avoid the possibility of having a FX Link ON indication at one end while, in reality one of the data path is disrupted. Fault Propagation The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is equipped with a real time Fault Propagation mechanism for both channels. When enabled (“MODE SETUP DIP switches # 1 and 5 in UP position) It will propagate failure of a F/O link to its respective TP port (i.e. cut the TP link) to notify the end user of the link failure. Both channels may have this feature enabled/disabled independently (See section12 – “DIP Switches setting “DIP switch # 10). Dip switch # 10 enables/disables both Far End Fault and Fault Propagation feature (overrides dip switches 1 and 5) for both channels. The following drawing (next page) shows the Fault Propagation implementation. The router in Station1 is configured to allow the PC1 to route through the TP1&FX1 path (default gateway route) to access other stations and the server in the central building. We need to run OSPF between routers in order to gain reliable and fast convergent network. If FX1 F/O link fails, it will disable the TP1 port due to fault propagation. PC1 will then select the second route composed by TP2&FX2 OSPF will recalculate routing table and the local PCs will continue to work because their default gateway is not changed. In this way we provide a backup mechanism to all stations. 9 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M The combination of the FP and FEF provide an efficient troubleshooting tool to identify the failing fiber within a F/O link and if the TP is disconnected. The entire network is under supervision and control of the SNMP Manager in the central building. The network can be monitored and managed from any SNMP management station running popular management platforms (e.g. FibroLAN MetroView, HP OpenView, SNMPc, etc) 10 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M 7 – Front Panel parts Identification mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M permit wall mount Installation either horizontally or vertically. Two holes are 188mm apart for horizontal wall mount installation, for vertical wall mount installation the two holes are 107mm apart. Use two suitable screws having heads diameter less than 8mm For Desktop use: Affix the supplied plastic “feet” (after peeling off the adhesive protecting sheet) to the bottom of the devices, with each “foot” approximately 1 cm from each edge. Place the device horizontally on a hard, clean surface (desk, shelf, etc.), leaving free space around it for natural ventilation. Avoid putting the device on other active, heat generating equipment and avoid putting such devices on the mS. CON2 / mS.CON2M. 19” Rack installation Use a standard flat shelf, install it in the rack and place one or two mS.CON2 / mS. CON2M side by side on the shelf. Make sure to leave a gap of at least 2-3cm above the unit. 9 – Power Connection CAUTION: When connecting a device to an AC (DC) power outlet, always first connect the cord to the device, and ensure that it is securely fastened. Only afterward connect the cord to the wall outlet. Make sure to use grounded (3 way) outlets (in case of AC models). NEVER OPEN THE UNIT WHEN IT IS CONNECTED TO POWER LINES! For each country FibroLAN (or FibroLAN’s distributor) provide with the product an appropriate power supply cord which is safety approved in accordance with such country’s National Electric Code mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M Connect AC line voltage at the rear of the converter, using the included power cord. The DLA22/DLA22M will accept any line voltage from 100 to 240 VAC, 50-60 Hz. There is no ON/OFF switch on the device. When the power is connected to the device, the device is ON. The POWER LED ON will indicate this. mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M -48 Proceed as above using a suitable DC supply cable. Ensure that the polarity of the cable complies with the polarity of the DC receptacle on the device as indicated on the device. There is no ON/OFF switch on the device. When the power is connected to the device, the device is ON. The POWER LED ON will indicate this. NEVER OPEN THE DEVICE WHEN IT IS CONNECTED TO POWER LINES! 12 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M 10 – F/O Cabling Connection The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is equipped with a pair of SC-type connectors – (only one in SFS mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M /SMR13/15 models). Do not remove the protective covers on the fiber connectors until you are ready to connect the fiber optic cables. Power should be connected before attaching the fiber optic cables. When dealing with fiber optic cables, it is essential to ensure that the TX at one end of the link is connected to the RX at the other end of the link. Some duplex fiber optic cables are color coded to help monitor the direction of data transmission. If the fibers are not coded, special attention must be paid to ensure a proper connection. Important note: in SFS models use APC type jumpers/pigtails to connect the unit to the fiber plant. Using other connectors may result in false front panel indications due to excessive reflections. CAUTION Radiation emitted from a fiber optic connector may be hazardous to human vision. Therefore, the following rules must be strictly observed All single-mode (SM) models are CLASS I LASER PRODUCTS And must be handled with special care . When not in use, keep the fiber optic connector closed using its protective cover. Never stare directly into the fiber optic connector of a powered device or into the end of a fiber connected to it. 11 – Twisted Pair Cable Connection Since each of the mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M RJ-45 two ports supports: full autonegotiation, auto-polarity and auto-cross, you can simply connect any device to any port by using a standard straight or crossed cable. You may need to force an operation mode other than auto-negotiation; refer to section 12. (Configuration switches) Use a shielded Cable Type 5 or higher grade, up to 100m (330ft) long to ensure proper operation at 100Mbps. Rules: Normally with the same type of TP ports (MDI-X < > MDI-X, or MDI > < MDI) use a crossover cable. With different ports (MDI-X < > MDI) use a straight cable. The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M products support Auto-Crossover: the RJ45 port has the intelligence to sense the type of cable which has been connected to it and will automatically configure itself to either MDI or MDI-X connectivity mode 13 mS.CON2/mS.CON2M 12 – DIP Switches setting The mS. CON2 / mS. CON2M is equipped with an array of 10 DIP switches marked “MODE SETUP” (front panel) that facilitate the proper setting of the device and individual ports. Shaded areas indicate factory default setting. Use a small tool (pen tip or a tiny flat-head screwdriver) to set the switches.
