Course Syllabus Digital DJ Performance Techniques 3 Credits MUC137, Section 33649 Scottsdale Community College, Department of Music Fall 2016 (September 1st to December 15, 2016) No Class on Major Holidays Mentioned Thursday Evenings 6:30PM - 9:10PM (Room MB-136 and Room MB-138) Instructors: Steven Chung (DJ Tranzit)([email protected]) Blake Smith (DJ Ascension) ([email protected]) and Recommended DVD (Available at SCC Bookstore): Scratch: A Film by Doug Prey by Doug Prey (Palm Pictures, 2001). Also Recommended: Students bring laptop with Serato Scratch Live (free at serato.com), Traktor Scratch Pro, or Pioneers Rekordbox DJ Software installed to class. Note: (Serato Users) Be sure to select the Rane SL-4 hardware for software installation. Headphones. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to: Demonstrate how to use a computer software interface such as Serato Scratch Live, Traktor Scratch Pro, Pioneer Rekordbox, as well as a “control” device in order to perform as a DJ. This includes MIDI and Serato Video (formerly “Video-SL“). Students should have an introductory understanding of Pioneer’s Rekordbox DJ software and industry standard Pioneer CDJ’s and industry standard mixers such as Pioneers DJM 900 series and Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixers. Attendance You should treat the time allotted for this class like a job (DJ residency). This means that you must come to class, including the period scheduled for the final exam. To avoid being marked absent, you should be prompt and not leave early. It is your responsibility to sign the attendance sheet. Take limited breaks at your own discretion. Instructors may drop students with four or more unexcused absences. If you plan to miss a class, inform me (either in person or via e-mail). Assume personal responsibility for missed lecture notes and assignments.
