What is a Multi-Function Center ? ®
A Brother Multi-Function Center® machine provides “all-inone” functionality – such as printing, scanning, copying and faxing, and often other advanced capabilities – into a single integrated unit. It is often much less expensive to purchase a single device that combines these functions rather than purchasing separate devices to perform each of these tasks.
How to choose the right
Multi-Function Center ® ®
for your needs
Today, Brother® offers one of the widest assortments of these all-in-ones, based on either laser or inkjet printing technology. You can choose the right machine with the functions and features you need to best address your particular requirements.
Why you may want an all-in-one. For many people, having one of these devices simply makes
their lives easier. A single integrated unit can perform the most common tasks, easily and efficiently and you’ll get additional capabilities you didn’t have access to previously.
Combining common functions – like printing and faxing – into one device can save both money and precious desktop workspace. It enables you to make copies of documents without having to visit a copy center. In addition, you can use its advanced “Scan to E-mail” function to send a document, color photo, or printed color copy via E-mail. So even if the majority of your work is printing and faxing you will find that a Brother Multi-Function Center® machine gives you more features, more functionality and more value when you compare it to a single function device. In addition to its built-in fax capability, you can also choose to send a fax directly from within your computer using Brother PC Fax software. When you purchase a color inkjet model, you can also print high-quality color photographs right from your desk. Brother all-in-ones with fax capabilities offer the ability to differentiate between an incoming fax and voice call. Each model has both a telephone line interface for connecting a phone line for faxing and a telephone answering device (TAD) interface if you would like to connect an external phone or answering machine. An added benefit to an integrated device is the space it saves you in your office as well as the economics of only needing to manage one set of supplies.
Choosing the ideal Brother all-in-one. Since there are a number of versatile models to choose from, it is easy to find one to fit the needs and budget of virtually any home, office or corporate user. First decide what type of printing and other functions you need to make the right technology decision. Here are some general topics to consider that can help you determine which technology choice is right for you: • If rich vibrant photo printing, a wide color LCD display, small footprint or integrated digital telephone answering machine with handset are important to you, then a Brother inkjet model should be the first stop in your search. • On the other hand, if you are concerned about higher print volumes, paper handling flexibility, maximum emulation support or lowest cost per page, then you should probably first consider a Brother laser all-in-one.
Still Unsure?
A Brother color inkjet all-in-one may be best ... • If you would like to print “photo quality” glossy photos, business documents and graphics in color ... • If you need a device that won’t take up a lot of space in your home or office ... • If you would like to print color photos from media cards, USB flash memory drives or PictBridge-enabled digital cameras† ... • If you need occasional color copying, color fax and color scanning capabilities
A Brother monochrome laser all-in-one may be best ... • If your output is mostly text-based ... • If you need to quickly print office documents ... • If color output is not required ... • If you are trying to reduce your overall printing costs
A Brother color laser all-in-one may be best ... • If you need to print and copy both color and monochrome documents ... • If you have higher volume color output requirements ... • If you prefer color laser technology to produce business documents, including presentations and reports ... • If obtaining the fastest color print and copy speeds are important to you
Inkjet features to consider: Widescreen LCD The widescreen color LCD provides the ability to view, enhance and print your photos directly from your digital camera media card or USB flash memory drive. Plus you can review “before and after” photo editing, and preview incoming faxes before printing – eliminating the needless printing of “junk” faxes.
Color print resolution (dpi) Print resolution is always expressed in dots-per-inch (dpi). Resolution indicates the quality of the printed output. The higher the dpi, the better the output quality will be for text, graphics and photos.
Built-in Message Center® feature Some color inkjet models come equipped with a built-in Message Center® feature that includes a telephone handset, full-duplex speakerphone for hands-free operation, and a digital answering machine that can record up to 29 total minutes. You save additional workspace since the phone and answering machine are built-in, plus you don’t have the additional expense of purchasing these items separately.
Borderless printing Primarily for printing photos, this enables you to print the edge-to-edge output typically on heavier glossy or matte “photo” paper up to 81/2 x 11 inches.
PhotoCapture Center® for digital camera users Found on many of our color inkjet models, this feature provides builtin slots so you can transfer images directly from media cards† to your PC or Mac®. You can also use this feature to print images directly from media cards†, USB flash memory drive (select models) or from a PictBridge-enabled camera without turning on your computer.
Photo Paper Tray The photo paper tray holds up to 20 sheets of 4x6 glossy paper without removing the standard paper from the tray. To use the 4x6 paper just engage the photo tray – or disengage to use the regular paper. This feature is available on all color inkjet models with a color LCD display.
Laser features to consider: Automatic duplexing (2-sided) If you would like automatic 2-sided printing, copying and faxing, and even scanning 2sided originals into your PC, then you should consider one of the Brother laser models with automatic duplexing.
All Brother All-in-ones ... Additional features to consider: Sheetfed or flatbed Choose a flatbed model if you need to copy, fax, or scan images from bound documents or if you simply prefer the “office copier style” convenience of placing documents facedown for copying, faxing or scanning.
Paper capacity and expandability In addition to an up to 250-sheet letter/legal paper tray, all
Brother laser all-in-ones have either a single-sheet bypass tray or a multi-purpose tray for printing envelopes, labels or letterhead. Also, some laser all-in-ones offer an optional 2nd paper tray to increase your total input paper capacity.
Print emulations Most Brother laser all-in-ones offer PCL emulation that is generally used for everyday office document printing. If you are printing graphics, photos, special fonts and charts, consider a model with PostScript® compatibility, found on many Brother laser products with BR-Script 3^ support. If you have legacy applications that require printing from DOS, choose a model with PCL emulation.
Password-protected printing & faxing If you will be in an environment where you receive highly confidential faxes or print highly confidential documents and would not like anyone other than yourself to view these documents, you should consider a Brother laser model with the Secure Print/Fax functionality.
USB Direct Interface Brother color laser printers offer an easy access built-in USB Direct Interface for convenient “PC free” printing. With this feature, users can print from – or scan to – a USB flash memory drive. The USB Direct Interface also provides PictBridge support. Simply connect your PictBridge enabled digital camera to print pictures directly, without first downloading them to a PC.
Secure Function Lock If you want to manage user access to walk up features such as copying, scanning and faxing, as well as keep printing and operating costs under control, then Secure Function Lock is a feature any system administrator will appreciate. Only certain models offer this advanced feature, including the MFC-8460n, MFC-8860dn, MFC-8870dw and MFC-9840cdw.
Auto document feeder (ADF) An automatic document feeder (ADF) is ideal if you frequently fax, copy or scan multi-page documents. In addition, you can print, copy, scan or fax up to legal size pages using the ADF on some Brother all-in-one products. Depending upon the model you choose, the ADF capacity can range from 10 pages up to 50 pages.
Paper Capacity All of the current models offer an adjustable paper tray that can easily accommodate up to legal-size paper. Most Brother laser all-in-ones also offer a manual feed slot or fold-down multipurpose tray for printing letterhead, envelopes, labels, custom paper sizes and heavier media. Some of our laser models can accept an optional lower paper tray*, allowing you to expand your maximum paper capacity.
Interfaces Every Brother all-in-one arrives with a USB interface; most Brother laser models add a Parallel interface. Many Brother models also include a built-in Ethernet interface and some include a wireless (802.11b/g) interface.
Paperless Fax (PC Fax) Brother PC Fax software is included with every model. It provides the convenience to send faxes right from your computer. To also receive incoming faxes to your desktop, consider a model with both PC Fax send and receive capabilities (PC Fax send only for Mac® users).
